High school’s house system has changed perceptions
Samohi softball wants encore performance BY DANIEL ARCHULETA Managing Editor
SAMOHI What does a softball team that didn’t allow a single run during Ocean League play do for an encore? “I really want to get to the (California Interscholastic Federation) title game,” Head Coach Debbie Skaggs said. “For the girls, that is their goal, too.” The hard-charging coach didn’t mince words when it came to her aspirations for her club. The team, which made it to the quarter finals of the CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs last season before being dispatched by Crescenta Valley, will have to rely on strong pitching and defense if it is to advance deeper into the playoffs, Skaggs said. The Vikings will move to Division IV this season. Topping the list of team strengths is junior pitcher Celisha Walker. The reigning Ocean League MVP is expected to lead the way. “Our strength is our pitching,” Skaggs said. “Our pitcher is much improved.

SMMUSD HDQTRS A line of parents slowly began forming behind the podium, some rehearsing a prepared statement in their heads, others exhaling heavily in nervous anticipation of speaking before the Board of Education. To an audience of district officials, parents and even some children, they each started touting a six-year-old educational approach that has personalized the learning experience at Santa Monica High School, strengthening the relationships between students and administrators. For these parents, it was just the beginning of an upcoming battle to convince the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District to keep the existing House System at the high school intact as officials face the challenging task of closing a gaping hole in the budget. The scene at the school board’s financial workshop on Wednesday was in contrast to the resistance that the small learning communities concept received when it was introduced as an option for Samohi years before its inception in
