THE REGULATIONS ROCK ISSUE

Busted: City Hall files charges against unlicensed contractor BY DAILY PRESS STAFF CITY HALL The owner of a home remodeling company in Santa Monica is facing criminal charges for allegedly accepting a down payment of $15,000 and then refusing to perform any work, officials with the City Attorney’s Consumer Protection Unit said Tuesday.

Hosayn Mandi, owner of New Line Interiors on Lincoln Boulevard, was arraigned last month at the LAX criminal courthouse on charges of contracting without a license, charging an excessive down payment, theft, and operating without a city business license. City officials said Mandi refused to remodel a kitchen even though he was paid.

The count of unlicensed contracting is punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. The other offenses are each punishable by up to one year in county jail. Additionally, charging an excessive down payment has a maximum fine of $5,000. The City Attorney’s office has already obtained a court order prohibiting Mandi and New Line Interiors from conducting any contrac-

Bush will leave behind a legacy of Bushisms, the label stamped on the commander in chief ’s original speaking style. Some of the president’s more notable malaprops and mangled statements: • “I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully.” — September 2000, explaining his energy policies at an event in Michigan. • “Rarely is the question asked, is our children learning?” — January 2000, during a campaign event in South Carolina. • “They misunderestimated the compassion of our country. I think they misunderestimated the will and determination of the commander in chief, too.” — Sept. 26, 2001, in Langley, Va. Bush was referring to the terrorists who carried out the Sept. 11 attacks. • “There’s no doubt in my mind, not one doubt in my mind, that we will fail.” — Oct. 4, 2001, in Washington. Bush was remarking on a back-to-work plan after the terrorist attacks. • “It would be a mistake for the United States Senate to allow any kind of human cloning to come out of that chamber.” — April 10, 2002, at the White House, as Bush urged Senate passage of a broad ban on cloning.

SM PIER For the past two years, Eric and Elise Beane have been the proud parents of a California spiny lobster, loving and providing for the crustacean through a caretaker. The Beanes adopted the lobster in 2007 to support the Heal the Bay Santa Monica Pier Aquarium where they have thrown birthday parties for their real life 4-year-old son, Ethan. The couple renewed the adoption last year just before the lobster was replaced with a moray eel. The family visits the aquarium every few months. “It’s something tangible for (Ethan) to feel he has some vested stake in the animals there,” Eric Beane said. The Marina del Rey couple are among the patrons who have financially supported the aquarium by participating in its Aquadoption program, officially “adopting” a sea creature through an annual donation. The program launched in 2006 to raise money for the nonprofit organization and allow visitors to establish a connection to the aquarium, helping them gain a better understanding and appreciation of the oceanic environment.
