LOS ANGELES COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT Number of Participants: 115 athletes Fundraising goal: $250,000 LACCD hopes to use the funds raised to help its students with food, housing and other emergency costs that sometimes prevent scholars from completing their degree. According to LACCD, 62 percent of its students have reported experiencing some form of food insecurity due to a lack of funds, which may compromise their ability to study. In a Hope Lab survey, 18 percent of LACCD students reported they have experienced homelessness. LACCD officials believe providing provisional support to cover the cost of housing may help individual students complete their course of study and increase their earning potential. Textbooks and tools required for courses are often the largest student budget item as they are estimated to cost nearly $1,800 a year.
