Dear Friends: On behalf of The McCourt Foundation and our partners, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Marathon Week and the 35th Anniversary of the Los Angeles Marathon presented by ASICS. This year is off to an exciting start - Conqur Endurance Group has merged with The McCourt Foundation and became a nonprofit. Together, we are an organization that empowers individuals and communities to build a healthier world through events and educational forums, changing the way to empower others to make a difference. This partnership expands our giving capacity and overall impact felt in the Greater LA area and beyond. The week’s festivities will kick-off at Dodger Stadium on Sunday, March 1st when as many as 6,500 students will run their final mile of a marathon run in increments over an 8-week period as part of the LAUSD Beyond the Bell program. Thousands of kids celebrating fitness and running in this world-class setting is inspirational. On Friday, March 6th and Saturday, March 7th, the LA Convention Center will welcome more than 45,000 athletes and supporters to the Los Angeles Marathon Health and Fitness Expo. 35th Anniversary souvenir merchandise, including ASICS footwear and apparel, and the latest products and services from our premier sponsors and other leading brands will be available. On Saturday March 7th, Dodger Stadium will host some 5,000 athletes who will run or walk the LA Big 5K and the LA 1/2K Kids Run. The 5K marks the third leg of the Triple 5K Tour of LA, comprised of the Santa Monica Classic 5K, the Pasadena 5K at the Rose Bowl and the LA Big 5K. Hundreds of runners will proudly receive their Triple 5K Tour of LA bonus medal for finishing all three races. Overnight, Dodger Stadium will be transformed to welcome more than 26,000 athletes who will toe the line to run the iconic Stadium to the Sea course. This will be largest field in the marathon’s history -- a fitting celebration of the race’s 35th Anniversary.

2020 LOS ANGELES MARATHON PRESENTED BY ASICS

This year, there are no less than 4 different medals that Marathon finishers can earn: - Los Angeles Marathon Finisher Medal - Conqur LA Challenge Medal for those finishing the Santa Monica Classic, the Pasadena Half Marathon at the Rose Bowl and the Los Angeles Marathon. - LA Double Play Medal for those finishing the weekend double of the LA Big 5K and the Marathon. - The very bold – and gold – LA Loyal Medal replicating the inaugural 1986 Los Angeles Marathon medal for those completing 10 consecutive Marathons.

12

We’re proud to assist 72 other nonprofit organizations to fundraise and raise awareness of their causes through the Los Angeles Marathon Charity Program. Over the years, this program has provided a platform for other nonprofits to raise more than $54+ million for a variety of vital causes and programs. In the coming years, the marathon’s impact will grow significantly as we drive our Mission of empowering communities to build a healthier world. We sincerely appreciate the support from our partner cities in Los Angeles, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica, without whose partnership and collaboration the marathon could not take place. The same is true of our 5,000 enthusiastic and loyal volunteers whose efforts are invaluable and paramount to producing a marathon of this scale. We are grateful to each volunteer and encourage participants to thank our volunteers throughout the weekend. On behalf of our amazing partners and incredible team, I wish everyone the best of luck and congratulate you on your tremendous achievements. Sincerely,

BRIAN MCCOURT President/Chairman

SERIOUS TRAINING IN THE WHEELCHAIR DIVISION

When Krige Schabort won the 2018 Los Angeles Marathon, he crossed the finish line more than half an hour before the other athletes finished the race. Schabort, a veteran athlete from South Africa who now represents the United States at the Paralympics, completed the marathon in just one hour and 35 minutes. It was his fifth time winning the Los Angeles Marathon since he started competing in the race in 1998.

2020 LOS ANGELES MARATHON PRESENTED BY ASICS

“I got a little bit lucky for a number of years to win by a good margin and break the course record,” Schabort said.

28

Schabort competes in the marathon’s Wheelchair Division, in which athletes with disabilities use high-tech racing chairs to surmount the course. The division attracts a number of elite competitors such as Schabort, as well as emerging athletes.

Laura and Jairo Rivera coordinate the Wheelchair Division compettors and Paralympic athlete Jenna Fesemyer credits them with building a strong community that motivates athletes to return to the marathon again and again. Schabort said the Riveras have also helped elevate the status of the Wheelchair Division and are trying to bring in more elite athletes from Europe and Asia. “They bring that sense of family that makes us love coming back to race,” Fesemyer said. The Los Angeles Marathon is the first race of the year for many wheelchair athletes, although most train throughout the winter off-season. For Fesemyer, that means building muscle and endurance on indoor equipment at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. “We’re buried in snow, but we put in a lot of work behind the

scenes,” she said. “LA is often a bit of a surprise because we don’t quite know how our indoors training measures up in an outdoor race. It helps us in gauging what gains we’ve made in the winter training season.” Schabort, who lives in Atlanta, contends with milder winters. By February, he’s off the indoor roller and out on the road with his racing chair. He starts out with sprint workouts, and by the end of the month, he begins training on hills to prepare for the LA course. The athletes need to apply their winter training from the very start of the race, Fesemyer said. “The first four miles are actually the hardest,” she said. “In the first mile,

you’re going steeply downhill pretty fast and you have to be mindful of other athletes around you. That’s a mental challenge for me. But the slope turns into a hill around mile three, where Schabort and Fesemyer said athletes try to pull ahead of the pack. “You have to make sure you don’t expend all your energy on mile three — you have 22 miles to go,” Fesemyer said. “You have to be mindful of what you’re feeling, what your body is feeling.” Schabort adjusts his racing chair to the LA course, using thicker tires for the rougher city roads and larger rims on the wheels to better push up hills.

“There are lots of little things that most people wouldn’t see in racing chairs, because they all look the same,” he said. “But elite athletes usually have custom-built chairs. If it isn’t measured to fit you, it won’t work well.” On race day, Fesemyer said, she looks forward to reuniting with her fellow athletes in the Wheelchair Division and finishing her first marathon of the year ahead of this summer’s Paralympic Games. “Everyone is fresh — it’s their first time competing for the season,” she said. “You have that peace of mind that everyone is going through the same training transition as you are.”

THE McCOURT VISION When Frank McCourt acquired the operating rights to the Los Angeles Marathon in 2008, his vision was for the race to be operated by a nonprofit. He saw the marathon is an important civic asset and nonprofit status would allow the race to maximize its’ community impact. This was a grand vision and took time to come to fruition. Along the way, Conqur Endurance Group was created to provide structure, systems and a team to support the marathon and Conqur hosted the 2016 men’s and women’s Olympic Marathon Trials to support the 2028 City of Los Angeles Olympic bid.

2020 LOS ANGELES MARATHON PRESENTED BY ASICS

A merger with The McCourt Foundation was the perfect avenue for Conqur to enter the nonprofit

34

space. For 29 years, The McCourt Foundation (TMF) has effectively empowered individuals and other nonprofits to fund-raise and advocate for health-related causes. Adding TMF’s nonprofit experience to Conqur’s expertise in producing world-class events will create a new organization that is bigger than the sum of its parts. “We’re very excited about the merger of TMF and Conqur”, said Brian McCourt, President & Chairman of TMF. “Combining the forces of each, one giving back and creating impact and the other delivering top-quality events is very powerful. We view our two organizations coming together as strategic in many ways. We see our new organization

as having an impact equation with a very high multiple. When we do the math, we see this as 1+1=11.” The merger was completed Jan. 1, 2020 and the combined entity is operating under The McCourt Foundation banner. Its mission is to create a platform that empowers individuals to self-organize and other nonprofits to fund-raise and advocate through TMF’s events, educational forums and programs. “No changes are expected in the management or operation of the Los Angeles Marathon presented by ASICS,” said Murphy Reinschreiber, TMF’s Chief Operating Officer. Pre-merger we (Conqur) were focused on community impact

EMPOWERING INDIVIDUALS AND COMMUNITIES TO BUILD A HEALTHIER WORLD

through the marathon’s Official Charity Program, which raises millions of dollars each year for other nonprofits, and its support for school programs Students Run LA and the 26th Mile. Post-merger we are building on this base to create even greater community impact.” With offices in Los Angeles and Boston, in addition to the Los Angeles Marathon presented by ASICS, TMF produces such events as the Pasadena Half Marathon at the Rose Bowl, Santa Monica Classic, Boston Waterfront 5K Fitness & Wellness Festival, Tour de South Shore, and the Educational Update.

YEARS OF ENDURANCE

1986 The Los Angeles Marathon has continuously evolved since it was created in 1986, developing a reputation over the years for a standout course, record-breaking runners and a commitment to charitable fundraising. The first marathon was by all accounts the result of Olympics-mania, which swept the City of Angels after it hosted the 1984 Summer Olympics. Organizers worried that the perception of traffic and smog would deter people from signing up but nearly 11,000 people registered for the race. The race never rested on its laurels from its initial success, and organizers established a tradition of innovation.

2010

2015

Perhaps the most important change in the race’s history was the establishment of the Stadium to the Sea route. The original course was a loop that began and ended near the University of Southern California’s Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum — a hat-tip to the centerpiece of the 1932 and 1984 Olympic games. In 2010, new owner Frank McCourt created the “Stadium to the Sea” route, which starts at Dodger Stadium and ends in Santa Monica. The new route was a huge hit and the marathon has grown tremendously. More than 20,000 racers crossed the finish line last year and tens of thousands gather along the course route to cheer on the runners.

The marathon celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2015 and moved to Valentine’s Day weekend the following year in order to host the Men’s and Women’s U.S.A. Olympic Team Trials Marathon. The trials, held the day before the marathon in downtown Los Angeles, selected the most successful USA Olympic Marathon Team ever and helped push Los Angeles’ 2028 Olympic host bid over the top.

In 1987, teacher Harry Shabazian trained six students from East Los Angeles’ Boyle Heights High School. This grew into Students Run LA, a region-wide program that has helped more than 30,000 students crossing the finish line.

The 2018 race marked $50 million in charitable donations over the marathon’s history. There are more than 70 charities associated with the 2020 race and organizers have a goal of raising $3.5 million. Racers can partner with one of the approved charities to race as part of their official team.

2004 In 2004, the Gender Challenge was introduced, giving the elite female runners a head start on the elite male runners and tacking a $50,000 bonus prize for whoever finished first. Tatyana Pozdniakova smoked her male counterparts in the inaugural challenge, and women have lead the men 6 to 4 since the challenge began.

In 2017, 1,809 athletes participated in the inaugural Conqur LA Challenge, which ties together the Marathon, Pasadena Half Marathon at the Rose Bowl, and the Santa Monica Classic 10K testing runners at all distances. The marathon is selected by Guinness World Records for world record attempts. Eight Guinness World Records titles were achieved, including fastest marathon dressed as a three-dimensional bird and fastest marathon dressed as a fast food item.

HEAVY MEDALS THE McCOURT GROUP OFFERS RUNNERS MORE THAN JUST A RACE WITH THREE CHALLENGE MEDALS. THE RUNNER’S HIGH, a feeling often experienced by Los Angeles Marathon presented by ASICS participants, is consistently described as one of the best parts of race day. Science has revealed the body produces endorphins while running, which is why people usually notice a boost in their day-to-day mood once they pick up the hobby and get into a regular habit of physical exercise. While runner’s high is certainly a welcomed feeling for those participating in the upcoming Los Angeles Marathon or the shorter races preceding it, the real reward is the potential of a medal — or three. The Los Angeles Marathon and 2020 LA BIG 5K are some of the premier races on the West Coast as thousands of athletes flock to the renowned events every year in chase of a challenge.

Unsurprisingly, some participants running this year have already completed last year’s Santa Monica Classic as well as January’s 2020 Pasadena 5K at the Rose Bowl, meaning a successful race to the finish in Los Angeles could net participants a few additional medals thanks to the McCourt Foundation’s various race challenges.

Race officials said participants of the Big 5K race in March should expect to experience another iconic run through Los Angeles as the course winds through beautiful Elysian Park before coming to a finishing line that’s set against the backdrop of the world-famous Dodger Stadium.

All participants in the 5K will receive a race shirt, finisher’s medal, post-race refreshments and a truly unforgettable race experience, but those who are brave enough to trot a combined 29.3 miles in two days can run in the 2020 Los Angeles Marathon the next day and earn the LA Double Play medal.

The LA Double Play medal is one of the marathon’s newer challenges, but the McCourt Foundation will also return with its Triple 5K Tour and Conqur LA Challenge medals this year as well.

To be eligible for the Triple 5K tour medal, athletes must participate in the 2019 Santa Monica Classic 5K, the 2020 Pasadena 5K at the Rose Bowl and the 2020 LA BIG 5K races within one “season” in order to claim their prize at the Big 5K finish line in March.

Runners who finish the 2020 Los Angeles Marathon this March and also previously participated in last year’s Santa Monica Classic and the Pasadena Half Marathon will earn the Conqur LA Challenge medal.

Athletes must participate in all three events within one “season” but bundled registration is not required to claim the challenge medal.

For the Conqur LA Challenge, eligible runners will claim their medal at the 2020 Los Angeles Marathon.

A DOCTOR’S ADVICE FOR MASTERING THE MARATHON “

“ NOTHING NEW ON RACE DAY

We spoke with Dr. Laura Oberle, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine at the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine and a marathon runner, for advice and tips to carry you over the finish line.

TAILOR YOUR TRAINING

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY

Everyone is different. If you’ve never run a marathon before, you’re going to have very different needs in your training than someone who has run several. It comes down to teaching your body how to continually move for an extended period of time. If you’ve never done that, you don’t know how your body will react to that burden. Picking a training program appropriate for your level of experience is the most important thing. And runners have to accept that it’s going to change along the way. If you’re training for such a long period, things are going to happen. If an injury pops up, it’s okay — that’s why we train for 16 weeks. There are ways to work around an injury or make changes in any training program, from beginner to elite, to get you where you want to be on race day. It’s important to be adaptable and learn how your body trains.

As runners, we fight through a lot of stuff. During a race, you should expect some sort of soreness. But if something is persistently painful — if you’re not able to run or walk without pain or if you fall — go to the nearest medical tent immediately. From a more general medical standpoint, dizziness, your heart racing and passing out are all very bad signs. Also, keep an eye on your fellow runners. I was cheering at a marathon one time, and a runner came up toward me who couldn’t run in a straight line and looked like he was going to pass out. If you see someone in duress, help them find a medical tent.

3 NOTHING NEW ON RACE DAY During the race, the most important thing is to not do anything new. Everything you do during the race should be things you practiced as part of your training program. During your training program, you should also be practicing how and what you eat and drink before you run and during the race. Think about whether you’re going to carry water or rely on water stations. I recommend bringing your own fuel — I use energy gels during races — and using it during your practice runs. If you eat food on race day that you’re not used to, not only is it not the same nutrient content you trained with, but your stomach might respond differently to it. See what works and what doesn’t, and stick with it on race day.

4 REST AFTER THE RACE If you’ve done everything we’ve talked about before and during, after the race you should be feeling pretty good. You probably will have some soreness, but because you’ve practiced in your training to get everything perfect for race day, you won’t feel too different than you did after the long runs you’ve already completed. Your level of fatigue may depend on whether you’ve done a marathon before or not. I usually recommend waiting a few days after the marathon or whenever you feel ready to start integrating light activities and progress from there. I always stress that because you’ve spent the last 16 weeks training and spent most of your spare time running, in the days and weeks post-race it’s great to do things you may not have had time to do before, such as yoga, cross-training or strength training. Now might be the time to try a new fitness class you had avoided pre-race because of your training program.

GREEN MEANS GOLD Volvo Cars radically reduce carbon emissions as part of new ambitious sustainability plan For more than half-a-decade, the Los Angeles Marathon presented by ASICS has received Gold level certification from the Council for Responsible Sport, meaning it is one of the world’s leading examples of responsible sport in action. Since 2007, the Council for Responsible Sport has sought to help measure and manage the social and environmental impacts of events with its certification process.

2020 LOS ANGELES MARATHON PRESENTED BY ASICS

The council’s vision is a world where responsibly produced sports events are the norm and its mission is to provide objective, independent verification of the socially and environmentally responsible

work undertaken by organizers. With their mind on the environment, this year’s marathon organizers have spent the past few months looking to ensure they were meeting these strict standards, and thanks to partners like Volvo Cars, which recently announced it aims to reduce its carbon footprint and will provide the marathon’s lead vehicle, it’s become second nature. Volvo Cars was the first conventional car maker to commit to all-out electrification and phasing out of cars powered only by

an internal combustion engine, according to company officials. The Volvo XC60 T8 eAWD compact SUV is a major part of that plan. Equipped with a 400 horsepower plug-in hybrid electric powertrain EPA rated at 57 MPGe, it will lead thousands of marathoners through the 26.2-mile course as the pace car, with its Thor’s Hammer headlights ablaze. TRAINING WITH A FAMILY

HOW TO PERSEVERE “ LEARNING AND ACCOMPLISH YOUR GOALS

Photo: Tanya Barcessat

LA Road Runners are more than the official training program of the Los Angeles Marathon presented by ASICS. The 500 athletes that participate each year consider themselves a family, says head coach Mark Minichiello.

2020 LOS ANGELES MARATHON PRESENTED BY ASICS

“It’s an extremely diverse group,” Minichiello said. “We have athletes who have been returning for 20 years and students who come out of the Run LA program. Our athletes come from all walks of life and abilities. But we have come to know each other as family.”

46

The LA Road Runners provide a 26-week training program split up into more than 20 pace groups that support a spectrum of experience levels. Each group is led by two or three pace

leaders who set the distance, location and pacing of practice runs. Several pace groups serve walkers and run-walkers, Minichiello said. “A lot of people don’t realize they can walk a marathon,” he said. “We have groups for seven-minute mile runners who finish in three hours, all the way to walking groups who finish in six and a half hours.” The LA Road Runners each receive a custom training program and meet around Los Angeles for practice runs from September to March. The app Zwift provides online and virtual training for runners to practice independently. Membership ranges from $125 to $150.

During the training program, the LA Road Runners bring in guest speakers to discuss nutrition, hydration, physical therapy and running shoes. The group’s social media community also provides a platform for runners to talk about their training experiences. On race day, pace leaders run with their groups and every member wears the same LA Road Runners shirt. In recent years, Minichiello has started sharing a humorous mile-by-mile guide to the marathon with runners that prepares them for terrain changes, road hazards and how to dodge free chili dogs or pranks by Jimmy Kimmel. With the proper training and support, running a marathon is not an insurmountable task,

Minichiello said. “Our goal is to train you properly over six months so you can enjoy the marathon,” he said. “It’s not as difficult as one might think. Completing a marathon is 70% or 80% mental.” And while running a marathon might earn you bragging rights as an athlete, completing six months of training and hours of running provides deeper rewards, Minichiello said. “A lot of athletes come in and think it’s a bucket list item,” he said. “But at the end of the marathon, they realize it’s more about learning how to persevere and accomplish your goals in life.”

A 35 YEAR TRADITION LEGACY RUNNERS Every runner who lines up at the start of the Los Angeles Marathon presented by ASICS will feel the excitement of the day. For some it will be the anticipation of their first time on the famed course, for many it will be a return trip to Santa Monica and for a select few it will be a time worn tradition unlike anything else and unattainable to anyone not already in the club. The Legacy Runners are a rare breed of 130 individuals who have finished every Los Angeles Marathon dating back to 1986. The ranks have inevitably dwindled from more than 500 to about 130 today but those still in the game are justifiably proud of their place in race history. “You come across that finish line you’re going to be a different person. You’ll feel different about who you are and what you’re capable of as a person” said Legacy Runner Johnnie Jameson, who was featured in a documentary Mile 19 about his repeat performances.

2020 LOS ANGELES MARATHON PRESENTED BY ASICS

Jameson thought the race would be something fun and a little crazy when he first heard about it so he decided to run the 1986 race...backwards. He came in dead last the first year but that didn’t deter him from coming back in year two for another back-

48

wards race followed by year three where he dribbled a basketball along the length of the course. He has found camaraderie among his fellow long-term runners. “I’ve never been involved in any kind of group all my life and this is the first time I find myself committed to be with people to converse about all the good things about life,” Jameson said. Legacy Runners have a permanent race number with a specialized bib that helps them standout from the crowd. “It’s a source of pride,” said Legacy Runner Rick Wallace. “We all wear our permanent numbers and people recognize us. It’s nice, every year I’m constantly being asked about it and people think it’s a cool feat. There’s a lot of nice recognition and with that a lot of satisfaction.” Jameson advises younger runners who want to pull off repeat marathons to have fun, pace themselves and focus on making it to the finish line. Those individuals inspired by the Legacy Runners to start their own marathon streak can participate in the LA Loyal program.

“We’ve done an amazing job of recognizing our Legacy Runners and now we want to reward other runners who keep coming back to say ‘thank you,’” said Kayla Newby-Fraser, Sr. Marketing Manager of the McCourt Foundation. Runners who complete two consecutive races are eligible to join the group. They can apply for a unique LA Loyal bib to help them also stand out and meet the other runners who never miss a chance to take the best tour of Los Angeles. Rewards increase with the number of consecutive races completed but runners must keep their streak intact. Skipping a year resets the program. Setting a multi-marathon goal might seem intimidating but listening to the wisdom of the athletic elders suggests it’s a commitment with significant rewards. “You know, it does get harder each year, definitely,” Wallace said. “Weight, age and height factor in and add time... you can’t avoid the age part, no matter what you do. But I wouldn’t change anything. When I run this marathon I feel invincible. I know the others in the group feel the same.”

According to LACCD, 62 percent of its students have reported experiencing some form of food insecurity due to a lack of funds, which may compromise their ability to study. In a Hope Lab survey, 18 percent of LACCD students reported they have experienced homelessness. LACCD officials believe providing provisional support to cover the cost of housing may help individual students complete their course of study and increase their earning potential. Textbooks and tools required for courses are often the largest student budget item as they are estimated to cost nearly $1,800 a year.

RUNNING TOWARD THEIR FUTURES “ SRLA STUDENTS STAY IN SCHOOL, GRADUATE AND

MAKE PLANS FOR COLLEGE AT A HIGHER RATE THAN

THEIR PEERS.

2020 LOS ANGELES MARATHON PRESENTED BY ASICS

For more than three decades, Students Run LA (SRLA) has helped thousands of greater Los Angeles area youth not only complete a marathon but, in doing so, find a path to future successes. Celebrating its 31st season, SRLA will once again guide more than 3,250 at risk students from 185 public schools to the Marathon finish line. If history holds, about 99% will finish with their lives positively changed forever.

52

Training alongside their volunteer mentors, program participants learn life-changing lessons that help students discover their best selves, according to SRLA co-founder Eric Spears. “SRLA grew out of an experience that a local teacher had when he finished the inaugural Los Angeles Marathon with no training,” said Spears. “He felt like he was going to die but he finished, and he was so empowered that he decided to challenge some of his students to do it. We didn’t think it would be popular, but it was and each year it’s grown. We keep trying to find ways to make it better. It’s a dynamic

thing -- at its core it’s an educational program.” Starting in September and continuing every month leading up to the marathon in March, SRLA organizes, transports and pays for participants to enter six community races. The races increase in distance as the training progresses to allow students the opportunity to learn to pace themselves as well as how to set and achieve small goals. By March, SRLA students and their mentors are ready to take on the Los Angeles Marathon. To make the journey possible, SRLA provides students and leaders with training shirts, a marathon uniform, running shoes, entry fees and transportation to the races. While running is the core activity, SRLA’s program is much more than just a training program. “By the time SRLA kids cross the Marathon finish line, their self-empowerment factor grows tremendously because they now have a model that they can look back on and say, ‘That’s what I need to do to succeed.’ The results are

obvious -- SRLA kids stay in school, graduate and make plans for college at a higher rate than their peers.” How impactful is this program? Many SRLA seniors go through their high school graduation ceremonies wearing their caps and gowns with their Los Angeles Marathon Finisher Medal proudly dangling from their necks.

ON THE FRONT LINES OUR VOLUNTEERS MAKE IT HAPPEN

With thousands of domestic and international runners gathering in Southern California every year since the race first came to the region in the 1980s, the Los Angeles Marathon is a momentous occasion that requires hours of work from hundreds of volunteers. Described by race organizers as the unsung heroes of the big day, the marathon’s volunteers are responsible for a number of duties pertaining to the experience of both fans and runners alike. Whether it’s a simple smile, a cup of water or an enthusiastic cheer, the sidelines provide a big boost to those in the race.

2020 LOS ANGELES MARATHON PRESENTED BY ASICS

Jacqueline Jacquet-Williams has manned a mile marker in the 26.2-mile race since its inception.

60

“I was encouraged to join the first Los Angeles Marathon because it was a historical event for my hometown and I wanted to be a part of it,” Jacquet-Williams said, explaining how nearly three months of preparation go into race day before athletes step foot on the starting line of the course. “I continue to come back to the LA Marathon because it is a labor of love and excitement, and I can attest to that with my years of experience.” “Organizational duties are many as we water station captains must

select dedicated co-captains to finetune the task of making Race Day run smoothly,” Jacquet-Williams said. “There are many required meetings that are held throughout the winter and early spring in an effort to nail down race day details.” As many as 200 applicants will submit an application to volunteer in a marathon every year, according to the longtime volunteer. “Students, teachers, parents, neighbors. community supporters and legendary volunteers come and go but there are always many more who return with their sleeves rolled up and are ready to tackle one of the many duties.”

Photo: Ofer Yakov

“Our call is early,” Jacquet-Williams said. “A carpool at ‘O’ Dark Hundred’ picks us dedicated volunteers up to set up supplies that are needed. We arrive at about 4:30 a.m., meet other volunteers and get to work on at least a 10

hour day.” “Since the first LA Marathon the course has changed many times,” Jacquet-Williams said, “but memorable and genuine comments of gratitude and the look on the faces from runners as we hand

them a cup of water and encouraging them to “keep it up” keep us returning. They always thank us for volunteering our time along with the local businesses who donate refreshments to us 200 volunteers.”

“It’s much better than it was back in the day before we were able to put everything in the computer or tablet,” Jacquet-Williams added, laughing at the thought of previously having to do the work by hand. “It’s still quite a responsibility but it’s time we always enjoy, and because we’ve done it for so many years, it’s second nature.” Inclement weather is always a challenge — even for a veteran like Jacqueline — but the enthusiasm and excitement from her peers of student and community volunteers are usually enough to power her through the city’s biggest run.
