Spunky ska brought back to life

SAVE FERRIS

wenty years ago, the combination of Monique Powell’s smooth but sassy voice set against an upbeat barrage of guitars and horns was unmistakably Save Ferris. It was a spunky and definitive soundtrack, not just for the classic romantic comedy “10 Things I Hate About You” but also for the generation of teenagers and young adults who grew up in the late ’90s. With Powell at the helm, the band carved out a major role in the era’s ska punk scene and helped lift the once-obscure genre into the mainstream.

Then, for a decade, that sound vanished.

Save Ferris took an indefinite hiatus, members of the group worked on other projects and the future seemed uncertain.

Now, it’s back. Surrounded by a different group of musicians, Powell has revitalized Save Ferris and will lead her new band into a headlining show as part of the Twilight Concert Series at Santa Monica Pier.

Powell acknowledged that the group doesn’t look exactly like it did 15 years ago,

but she’s looking forward to bringing the Save Ferris sound back to an adoring Southern California audience.

“I love every single member that has ever come in and out of Save Ferris,” Powell said.

“My current bandmates are my brothers; we would do anything for each other. They are kind, considerate, patient and some of the most talented musicians I’ve ever had the honor to play with.”

Powell arrives in Santa Monica with a deep affection for the area, which she’s frequented for much of her life. She’s spent time on the beach and at the pier, strolling along Third Street Promenade and nearby Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice and checking out the art galleries at Bergamot Station.

“It’s a dream come true to perform on the pier that I’ve been visiting my whole life,” she said.

And if Powell has her way, she’ll squeeze in a meal or two while she’s in town.

rants,” she said. “I seriously haven’t had anything but amazing food and experiences at Santa Monica restaurants.”

Powell has a similar appetite for making music, which she’s done as the lead singer for Save Ferris and numerous other projects.

Named after the 1986 classic film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” the band formed in the mid-’90s and exploded onto the scene with “Come On Eileen,” a cover of a Dexys Midnight Runners song.

Save Ferris then cemented its place in the ska world with songs like “The World Is New,” which received significant radio play and which vaulted the band into the upper echelons of the genre alongside Reel Big Fish and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, among others.

As a female vocalist, Powell brings a fresh layer to a scene dominated by male singers. It’s the landmark piece of a sound characterized by a blend of punk, swing and bouncy brass.

“It’s making a surprising comeback,” Powell said of ska, “which is great for Save Ferris.”

Powell said the long hiatus forced her to reflect on her past: the things she thought she did right, the things she would’ve done differently.

“Coming back, I now know what I want and how to achieve it,” she said. “I also know what I don’t want. I also know what is most important to me: integrity, kindness while standing up for myself, protecting and caring for my band members, getting what I want while maintaining my integrity, and creating the best show for our audience that I can achieve, no matter how old I feel.”

And Powell hopes the Save Ferris concert at the pier will have attendees feeling young again.

“I try to make our shows inclusive and participatory for the audience,” she said.

“Anyone attending a Save Ferris show can have a great time and feel like they’ve been a part of something really fun.”

eloved Santa Monica mainstay Rusty’s Surf Ranch has long been a place of community and music discovery. The bar and music venue just closed out its 15th annual Emerging Artist Competition. The prize? A $2000 opening slot in another Santa Monica mainstay- The Twilight Concert Series, August 25. After two months and three rounds of competition, the Jake Davis Band was crowned victor.

“It’s really awesome. When we first got accepted into that competition I had submitted to it months before and already forgotten about it. It’s kind of a crapshoot just to get in to things like this,” front man Jake Davis says. While the advent of social media has allowed artists more ways than ever to emerge independently, there’s unique value in competitions like the EAC that give groups the chance to perform live. “When you play for 30 to 40 minutes in front of people they really get to understand who you are and what your talents are, as opposed to listening to a 30 second snippet of your song.”

The band’s first EP The Valley (Davis proudly hails from the suburban Los Angeles region) comes out later this month. The band gleefully embraces the more classic roots of pop while updating them for a modern audience. “I grew up on The Beatles and the Beach Boys who are kind of the originators of pop songs as we know them today. I have a big reverence for coming up with hooks and melodies as a basis for anything else,” Davis says. After recording music and vocals, the band works with producer Dekku to give more of a 2016 electronic sound. “A genre is just how you arrange it, but a melody is either catchy or it isn’t.”

It’s been a long winding road to the

Twilight Concert stage. The EAC began taking submissions back in January. After sorting through countless submissions, competitors were selected and the preliminary round then went from April 14 to May 12, the Semi- Final Round through the back half of May, then the Final Round on June 23. Each round was judged by a panel of industry experts both in and out of Santa Monica. This included music publishers Don Williams (whose credits include Bob Marley and Tom Petty), Kathleen Wirt (Fiona Apple, Nelly Furtado) and the owner of Rusty’s himself Russell Barnard.

The competition was judged on 3 main categories: talent, audience connection, and the quality of each group’s original material. The Jake Davis Band passed with flying colors. “They were at the top in all 3 categories,” Barnard says. “It was actually a unanimous decision in the final round.”

The partnership with the Twilight Concert Series came in the last several years of the competition and it makes Davis’ win especially fitting. He recalls going to the Twilight Concert Series in his younger years. “I remember looking up at the stage and thinking how cool it would be to be up there,” he says.

Barnard found this detail out after already naming Davis the winner. The emotional significance was not lost on him. “It just turned out that he was the perfect person,” Barnard says. “It connected so strongly with me because the very first time I ever fished was at the Santa Monica Pier. The pier has been in my life since I was a kid… When Jake made those comments, I took it very personally. I just thought ‘How appropriate, how fantastic that this all came full circle.’”

SAVE FERRIS is a ska-punk band formed circa 1995 in Orange County, Southern California. Their name is a reference to the 1986 film Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The band formed after the dissolution of a number of Southern California bands.

With Monique Powell as manager, front per-

son, and co-songwriter, the band began to book shows around Southern California to a great underground response.

Financed by Powell's sister, the band released their debut EP "Introducing SAVE FERRIS" on Powell's label, Starpool Records, in 1996. They ended up selling close to 20,000 copies of their EP out of the trunks of their cars, with huge support from Orange County independent record shops and fans.

That year, Powell provided vocals on the Reel Big Fishsong "She Has A Girlfriend Now" on their album "Turn the Radio Off" (Mojo).

With Powell as manager and lead, and as favorites of KROQ radio's legendary Rodney

on the Rock, SAVE FERRIS created a presence on LA's KROQ radio, possibly being the first unsigned band to do this in LA alternative radio history. Later that year, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences gave the band a Grammy showcase award for best unsigned band, earning them a recording contract with Epic Records (SONY).

The band released their debut full-length album for Epic in 1997. "It Means Everything" featured several re-recorded tracks from the EP, several new songs, and, on Powell's urging, a cover of Dexy's Midnight Runners' "Come on Eileen," which the band released as their first official single, and what was to become their most successful single. The band also released "The World is New" as a single which was featured in the film "The Big Hit" starring Mark Wahlburg. Olympic medal winner Tara Lipinski used "The World is New" in her debut program as a professional skater in the nationally telecast 1998 Skate TV Championships.

The band toured extensively in support of "It Means Everything", opening for bands such as Sugar Ray, The Offspring, and Reel Big Fish. In April 1998, they made their television debut on HBO's music series "REVERB" and made an on-screen appearance in the cult classic teen film, "10 Things I Hate About You". The album sold over 400,000 copies, and spawned three Top Ten hits in both Japan and Mexico. With two singles in the Billboard top 100 and full rotation on alternative radio all over the world, SAVE FERRIS has managed to go Platinum internationally.

Winter 1998 saw the departure of their drummer. After a thunderously successful main stage tour with the Vans Warped Tour, the band began writing their follow-up to "It Means Everything". The appropriately-titled "Modified" was released in October 1999.

The album saw the band moving away from their ska-punk roots and into pop-punk territory. The band toured nationally with the band "Lit", of hit single "My Own Worst Enemy" fame. SAVE FERRIS continued to tour in support of "Modified" throughout 2000 and 2001. In August and September 2001 the band did a short tour of the UK. In the winter of 2002, SAVE FERRIS had the rare opportunity to play front and center at the nationally broadcast Winter Olympics Snowboarding Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Powell self-financed what she called the "For the Fans" SAVE FERRIS US tour in 2003.

On March 29, 2003 at Ska Summit 2003 in Las Vegas, SAVE FERRIS played on the main stage to a thunderously positive response.

The Ohio Players came into musical prominence in the 1970's as pioneers of street funk and underground R&B. After signing with Mercury Records in 1974 through 1977 The Ohio Players landed three consecutive platinum albums “Skin Tight, “Fire”, and “Honey”. Two number one singles on the billboard pop charts “Fire” and “Love Rollercoaster” and five number one R&B singles “Funky Worm”,”Fire”,”Sweet Sticky Thing”, “Love Rollercoaster,” and “Who'd She Coo”. The Ohio Players traveled the world and produced more than a dozen albums and received 14 gold and platinum awards for their labors. They also appeared on many national television programs from Dick Clark, Don Kushner, to David Letterman. Since then there is a long list of Artists who have sampled or re-recorded their material to list a few: Snoop Dogg, Puff Daddy, Salt & Peppa, Too Short, Sound garden, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Paul Jackson Jr., and Alex Bugnon.

Be warned that parking by the beach is expensive! $20 after 4pm! Yikes! But there is a new Carpool Discount. Cars with 4 or more people get a $5 voucher to redeem at the bike valet so pile in.
