Rose Bowl matchup features a pair of national powers in TCU and Wisconsin PASADENA For the 97th Rose Bowl Game presented by VIZIO, the No. 5 BCS ranked Wisconsin and co-champions of the Big Ten Conference will battle the No. 3 BCS ranked Texas Christian University (TCU). Jan. 1, 2011 will mark only the second meeting for these two teams. The last meeting took place in Madison, Wisc. for the 1970 season opener, ending in a tie, 14-14.

All eyes look toward Pasadena each New Year’s Day for the Rose Bowl Game and the Tournament of Roses Parade.

The Frogs held out hope of a title shot, but higher-profile unbeatens Auburn and Oregon won their final regular-season games to stay in front. It is TCU’s first Rose Bowl appearance.

Big Ten co-champion Wisconsin is headed back to Pasadena for the first time since the 1999 season, when Heisman Trophy-winning tailback Ron Dayne led the Badgers past Stanford on Jan. 1, 2000. Wisconsin held off fellow one-loss co-champions Ohio State and Michigan State in the BCS standings, and its powerful offense is sure to be the stiffest challenge faced by TCU’s NCAA-leading defense.

A Granddaddy with a history The Rose Bowl is a true California gem E ach year, America’s New Years celebrations are topped off with the pomp and circumstance of floats adorned with millions of flowers gliding down Colorado Boulevard, the California sun shining on a football stadium and two collegiate teams going head to head for the glory of winning the Granddaddy of Them All — The Rose Bowl.

The first Rose Bowl Game was played at Tournament Park in Pasadena, Calif. on New Year’s Day, 1902. The University of Michigan crushed Stanford University, 49-0. Between 1902 and 1916, the game of football was put aside and replaced with Roman-style chariot races. In 1921, a horseshoe-shaped stadium was beginning to come to life and the first game at the Rose Bowl was played on Oct. 28, 1922 between the University of California Bears and the University of Southern California Trojans.

Since the first game in 1922, all Rose Bowl games have been played at the Rose Bowl Stadium with the lone exception of the 1942 matchup. On the heels of the Pearl Harbor attack and U.S. entry into World War II, the West Coast location was deemed too precarious, and the game was moved to Duke University, where the Blue Devils took on the Oregon State Beavers and lost 20-16.

The Rose Bowl is always played on the same day at the same time each year,” commented Scott McKibben, Executive Director of the Tournament of Roses.

With such a rich history, Californians have a National Historic Landmark in

their backyard. Besides the parade and the game itself, the Rose Bowl brings with it other festive traditions and celebrations. Before the roses head down Colorado Boulevard and the coin is tossed, players and coaches take to the tables for the annual Lawry’s Beef Bowl, started in 1956 with opposing teams dining at the Beverly Hills restaurant for a pre-bowl dinner. Statistics show that the Beef Bowl “champion” has won the Rose Bowl 38 times in the past 54 years. Beef isn’t the only prize on the table at this annual event. Limited edition collectors’ pins, trading cards and mini-footballs with the teams’ logos and Rose Bowl logo are also coveted by adoring fans.

The time-honored celebrations of the Rose Bowl and Tournament of Roses Parade create a perfect opportunity for those visiting from all over the country to expand their California vacation.

More notable traditions include the Rose Bowl participating schools’ marching bands playing in the Tournament of Roses Parade, the band of the school boasting the highest record playing the national anthem, and both bands spotlighted during halftime as the sole spectacular entertainment.

Biking The South Bay Bicycle Trail runs along Santa Monica State Beach. The trail stretches 22 miles (35 km) — north toward Malibu and south to Torrance — and is the longest beach path of its kind in the world.
