BUILDING ANEW: A view of Site C at The Village, looking south on Ocean Avenue. Developers have proposed a revised concept that includes three buidings of varying size, the tallest being 96 feet.

CIVIC CENTER Apparently, size does matter, at least when it comes to The Village, a mixed-use residential and commercial development planned for the city-owned vacant lot adjacent the RAND Corporation on Main Street. City officials and residents had problems with the mass and scale of the proposed development by Related Company of California and Santa Monica Community Corp., which is overseeing the construction of 160 affordable housing units

that will be subsidized by the sale of roughly 165 market rate condominiums and artist lofts to be located on three sites spread out across three acres. In August, the City Council instructed city planners to meet with the architect and Related to discuss ways to decrease the size of the development so that it didn’t loom too large over the street or a park planned on the north side of Olympic Drive.
