THE HERE COMES THE RAIN ISSUE

Samohi choirs go caroling through the town BY SABA HAMEDY Special to the Daily Press

DOWNTOWN I can’t memorize formulas for math class, but I know every word to “Frosty the Snowman.” I never have time to exercise outside of school, but I probably burned thousands of calories after running around Main Street and Barnes and Noble this past weekend (caution: Wearing high heels while running may cause blisters and foot pain — wear at your own risk). My attention span is pretty low, but I don’t have time to get distracted during my countless hours of caroling. I am a part of the Santa Monica High School Madrigal ensemble — and we like to carol. Though our schedules are demanding, we always manage to have fun because the life of a caroler is never dull. Every member of the Madrigal and Chamber ensembles knows that in order to have a successful caroling session, you need the following caroling essentials: velvet choir dress or tux, black shoes, red book of carols (33 pieces of holiday classics bound together into one fat book), pitch pipe (to play starting note), a water bottle (or two), and lots of energy (this being the most important factor on the list). We must be prepared to sing as large as a group of 40 (approximately the total number of Madrigal and Chamber members) or as small as a group of six (two people per part). And in any group, no matter what the size, one person is designated carol caller, one person is designated verse caller, and one person is designated pitch player. The carol caller is in charge of choosing what carols the group sings and basically takes on the roll as group leader. The verse caller

COMMUNITYPROFILES DR. BOB BARAVARIAN

Doctor combines sports and medicine BY MELODY HANATANI Daily Press Staff Writer

WILSHIRE BLVD As a college student, Dr. Bob Baravarian was always sure of two things — his love for sports and interest in pursuing medicine. But it was not until his second year at the University of Southern California that Baravarian found his true calling. An assistant coach on the men’s tennis team — on which Baravarian was a player — underwent surgery to repair a tear of his Achilles tendon, suffering from complications that left him in a wheelchair for a year. It was a podiatrist who finally corrected the problem through surgery, allowing the coach to be back on his feet playing tennis just three months later. Baravarian knew little about the podia-

try discipline but was nevertheless hooked. “Because of my interest in sports my whole life, I always knew I wanted to get into some field of sports medicine and I liked the foot and ankle because of the complexity,” he said. More than 16 years after graduating from USC with a bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology, Baravarian today is one of the co-directors of the University Foot and Ankle Institute in Santa Monica where he specializes in sports medicine, reconstructive surgery and revision of failed surgery. The center, which is affiliated with the UCLA Medical Group, is known for practicing revolutionary techniques to correct some of the most common sports injuries — tendonitis of the Achilles and plantar
