■ Britain’s Channel 4 public television announced in July that it would soon schedule a week of documentaries on masturbation, including one by self-designated “orgasm coach” Betty Dodson, “Masturbation for Girls,” teaching hands-on techniques to three women. ■ The pendulum swung the other way in October, however, when Britain’s Tesco stores agreed that a kit for learning pole dancing (advertised on its Web site), to “(u)nleash the sex kitten inside,” with a garter and suggestive DVD, was perhaps unsuited for its “toy” section, where it might have been appealing to adolescent girls. (Tesco moved the listing to its physical fitness section.)

Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and his group became the first men to reach the South Pole, beating out an expedition led by Robert F. Scott. Six South Moluccan extremists surrendered after holding 23 hostages for 12 days on a train near the Dutch town of Beilen.

SMMUSD HDQTRS. — Board members on Tuesday received a lesson in School Building Bonds 101. Representatives of Los Angeles County Office of Education, and the law offices of Stradling, Yocca, Carlson and Rauth, a firm specializing in municipalities, spoke to school board members about the steps the district is required to take following the passage of Measure BB by voters last month. Approximately 72 percent of Santa Monica’s voters approved Measure BB, setting the stage for the district to spend $268 million on infrastructure needs such as building renovations, construction, repairs and computer technology. Before any further steps are taken, the district must form a Citizens Bond Oversight Committee, a group that would have no decision-making authority but could provide advice to the school board on matters related to Measure BB funding. The committee is required under Proposition

DOWNTOWN, LA — The long-stalled saga of the “Black Widows” murder case has finally made some movement. On Wednesday, an LA County Commissioner moved the case of Helen Golay and Olga Rutterschmidt — accused of masterminding a dubious plot GOLAY in which they befriended, then murdered, two former homeless men in separate hit-andrun accidents RUTTERSCHMIDT in a scheme to cash in on their life insurance policies — from his department to that of a supervising judge because of the convoluted nature of the case. Golay is a Santa Monica landlord, who owned at least three apartment complexes within the city at the time of her arrest on federal mail fraud charges on May 18. Rutterschmidt and Golay were present for the hearing, both looking tired and relatively plain in their orange jumpsuits as compared to their mug shots, in which Golay was sporting a ’60s-style bouffant and Rutterschmidt a smile plastered on her face. The main issue complicating the case has been the scheduling of a preliminary trial, which the attorneys have attempted to do at least four times, including on Wednesday when Commissioner James Bianco granted a request by Rutterschmidt’s attorney, Public Defender Michael Sklar, to
