THE RIDE OR DIE ISSUE
Mount St. Mary’s provides guaranteed admission to SMC BY MELODY HANATANI Daily Press Staff Writer
SMC While UCLA and USC continue to be two of the most popular destinations for local community college students, the universities could see some stiff competition from Mount St. Mary’s College. Officials with Santa Monica College and the private institution announced on Monday a new partnership to provide guaranteed admissions to transfer students who meet certain requirements, including holding a minimum 3.0 grade point average and fulfilling specific courses outlined in the agreement between the two schools. “When you have something like a guarantee, it really catches people’s attention and makes them comfortable knowing that there … will be an ease of transfer from one institution to the other,” said Dan Nannini, who is the coordinator for the SMC Transfer Center. “It’s helpful for making both parents and students feel comfortable with coming to the community colleges first.” The arrangement between the two institutions includes a general transfer agreement for all students and a specific one for Mount St. Mary’s Associate Degree in Nursing-to-Master’s Degree in Nursing (ADN-MSN) program. The latter is a 3.5year-track in which students spend two years at Santa Monica College and finishes the remainder of their time at Mount St. Mary’s, receiving their associates, bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing in less than four years. SMC students accepted under the general transfer agreement will also receive a $13,000 scholarship to the school and will continue to receive aid as long as they maintain at least a 3.0 GPA, according to Sonali Bridges, the associate dean of outreach at SMC and Mount St. Mary’s graduate who pushed for the partnership. “It seemed like a good marriage,” she said. The transfer agreement is a first for Mount St. Mary’s, an 83-year-old institution that has 2,300 students spread over its two campuses in Los Angeles, including one in Brentwood. Only 23 SMC students have transferred to the private school in the past four years. SEE DEAL PAGE 12

ALL ABOARD: SMC students get on the Mini Big Blue Bus at the corner of 17th and Pearl streets on Tuesday afternoon. The Big Blue Bus is currently considering two rerouting options for Line 6, which connects the SMC campus to the Palms neighborhood, possibly moving the path of travel.
Big Blue Bus proposing alterations to service BY MELODY HANATANI Daily Press Staff Writer
SUNSET PARK Residents who have long complained about the placement of a bus stop near Santa Monica College could soon see a solution to their problems. The Big Blue Bus is currently considering two rerouting options for Line 6, which connects the SMC campus to the Palms neighborhood, possibly moving the path of travel from Pearl Street to Pico Boulevard. The agency has drawn criticism from neighbors upset about the stop at Pearl and 20th streets, claiming it has brought unwelcome congestion, noise and activity from college students who wait for the bus to

arrive, some smoking in front of houses and sitting on the front steps of apartment buildings. “This is a bus route serving SMC,” Laura Thixton, a neighbor who lives off 20th and Pearl, said. “Twentieth and Pearl are not part of the SMC campus.” Her frustration was expressed during a community workshop on Monday at the Fairview Branch Library where officials with the Big Blue Bus unveiled a series of proposed systemwide routing changes that could take effect on Feb. 14. The meeting was the first of several expected to be held this week to solicit input from the public before going to the City Council next month with the recommendations.

Another meeting is scheduled at the Santa Monica Main Library on Saturday morning. The Big Blue Bus is proposing two different options for Line 6, which is also known as the SMC Commuter, including one alternative that would take both inbound and outbound trips off of Pearl Street and place them on Pico Boulevard and Bundy Drive. A second option, which is also one that the agency is recommending, would be a compromise between the Pico/Bundy alternative and the current route, keeping inbound trips to SMC on Pearl Street and moving the outbound
