The Tel Aviv newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported in October that the much tighter border security that resulted from the recent war with Hezbollah guerrillas had caused marijuana prices in Israel to jump as much as 800 percent. And, though general tensions between Arabs and Jews remain high inside Israel, prominent ultra-Orthodox Jews joined militant Palestinian Muslims in fierce opposition to the November gay-pride parade in Jerusalem, according to a Boston Globe dispatch. (Said activist Rabbi Yehuda Levin, “Only this onslaught of homosexual radicalism could bring together such disparate voices.”)

CITYWIDE — There you are, quietly sipping your vodka martini and minding your own business when it happens. He’s Mr. Rico Suave, dressed in an overpriced suit and all-too flashy tie. He motions his finger towards the bartender, indicating a fresh round of drinks for the both of you. Then he leans in and whispers in your ear: “If this bar is a meat market, you must be the prime rib.” Leaving the bar and letting out a sigh, the scene is enough to make most single Santa Monicans wonder: Isn’t there any better place in the city to find a mate? With so many beautiful residents that are single and ready to mingle, it would seem that living in Santa Monica would present a prime opportunity to find that certain someone. Still, one can easily become tangled up in the web of cheesy pick-up lines and free drinks at local bars and clubs if there’s seemingly no alternatives. “There’s never been a better time for singles looking for love,” See PASSING THE BAR, page 21

One can be the loneliest number around holidays BY MELODY HANATANI Daily Press Staff Writer

CITYWIDE — Something about the holidays makes Jason want to cozy up with someone special. “The cold weather makes me want to be near someone,” said Jason, who works in a Third Street Promenade coffee shop. “I need the warmth of someone physically next to me. I need warm eyes to look into.” It’s a feeling that millions of singles across the nation share this time of year, whether it’s because of the mistletoes dangling overhead begging for two people underneath to share a kiss; because of the cold wintery weather drawing two lonely peoFabian Lewkowicz fabianl@smdp.com

SM AIRPORT — Alternative fuel car lovers, now it’s your turn. Just 15 minutes from where the LA Auto Show is featuring an array of swanky new cars, the City of Santa Monica is hosting an event this weekend that could leave Los Angeles officials green with envy.

More than 100 different alternative fuel vehicles will be showcased this weekend at the Alternative Car and Transportation Expo, an event that city officials call the largest and most comprehensive alternative car convention in the nation. It’s an event befitting a city known as a leader in sustainability efforts. “There is no more of an appropriate place than Santa Monica,” said Christine Dzilvelis, organizer of the event being staged at Barker Hangar.
