To settle a discrimination lawsuit by transsexual men in October, the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority agreed to open all of its restrooms on the basis of individuals’ “gender expression,” meaning that, for example, any man dressed seriously as a woman could choose the ladies’ room. And the New York City government is currently considering adopting a rule to permit people to switch genders on their birth certificates, regardless of whether they’ve had surgery, as long as they’ve lived in the new gender for two years and a physician and a mental-health counselor approve.

SANTA MONICA CANYON — More than a dozen fire companies, including those from Santa Monica, and 50 firefighters responded to the scene of a Thursday morning house fire on West Channel Road. The two-story, single-family dwelling was completely gutted after crews worked for several hours to fully extinguish the blaze. No injuries were reported, according to Ron Myers, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman. The cause of the fire was under investigation as of Thursday afternoon. “There was heavy fire when they arrived,” said Myers, who reported that the house’s roof collapsed amid firefighting efforts. “It took about 31 minutes for knockdown.” “Knockdown,” according to Myers, is a term used by firefighters to describe when a blaze is mostly contained and no longer thought to pose a threat of spreading to other structures. Though the house — reportedly at 345 West Channel Road — was in close proximity to a number of other homes, none of the bordering properties were believed to have been damaged. Ten Los Angeles fire companies responded to the call at 9:46 a.m., with companies from Santa Monica playing a supportive role, as the home is situated just outside of the city’s northern limits.

CITYWIDE — Santa Monica chefs are cooking up the best cuisine in Southern California, according to a new survey released by Zagat, the world’s leading restaurant guide. Nearly 8,000 diners earlier this year participated in Zagat’s annual survey of restaurants in the region, naming Santa Monica mainstays like the French-American inspired Melissé, the American bistro Josie and the chic sushi bar/restaurant The Hump as the best of the bunch. “The area has had a great influx

GRANT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL — The Sunset Park community has had enough of crime. Concerned about what seems like increasing incidents of gang violence and crime in the Sunset Park neighborhood, residents decided it was time to speak out to the officials who can affect change. About 30 residents gathered at a Town Hall-style meeting at Grant Elementary School on Wednesday to voice their concerns and frustrations to a panel that included Capt. Alex Padilla of the Santa Monica Police Department; Taffany Lim, an expert on law enforcement training and community policing; former mayor Nat Trives, who facilitated the event; newly elected Mayor Richard Bloom and Mayor Pro Tem Herb Katz. Collectively, Katz and Bloom have lived in Sunset Park for 72 years. If you live in a community long enough, you experience crime over time, Bloom said. “I think we probably all agree it’s not enough to live in a statistically safe community,” Bloom said. “We need to feel safe as a community, too.” The consensus from the attendees was that there is a need for more police officers in Sunset Park. Resident Stephanie Furlong asked to see more policing in her area, no matter what it takes. Furlong listed the incidents that have occurred on her block alone in the past few months — murder, gang brawls, home break-ins and car vandalism. Last month, a purse was stolen from a car while the owner was sitting in it, Furlong said.
