NEWS OF THE WEIRD by Chuck Shepard

News of the Weird reported in December that Inga Kosak had won the first World Extreme Ironing Championship in Munich in September, based on running a course through several stations (e.g., up in trees, in the middle of streams) and ironing a designated garment. An October Wall Street Journal story shows the "sport" as growing in prominence. South African Anton Van De Venter, 27, broke the high-altitude record in August by ironing his national flag at the 20,000-foot summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, while nude, in freezing temperatures (quote: "I came, I saw, I pressed a crease"), and British diver Ian Mitchell sawed through ice in Wisconsin in March and submitted photos of himself in a wet suit "ironing" (with a Black & Decker Quick 'n' Easy) a shirt that was braced against the underside of the ice.

POLICE DEPT. — After more than four months of investigating, authorities expect to soon complete their report on the farmers’ market tragedy that left 10 dead and 80 injured when an elderly man sped through a crowded downtown street. Officials from the California Highway Patrol and Santa Monica Police Department met last week. Investigators from CHP briefed SMPD Chief James T. Butts Jr. and detectives on the status of the eagerly anticipated report, which they plan to file next month. See INVESTIGATION, page 4

PICO NEIGHBORHOOD — The man suspected of killing a 19year-old Santa Monica man in September has been arrested for carrying a concealed weapon. Arthur Archuletta, 21, was arrested by Santa Monica Police on Nov. 22, after officers found a firearm in the car he was riding in. Archuletta, a convicted felon, was charged with being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm and for a parole violation. He has no bail, SMPD Lt. Frank Fabrega said. Three others also were arrested in a Ford Taurus stopped by police at

(Editor’s note: This is part of an ongoing series that tracks the city’s expenditures which appear on the upcoming Santa Monica City Council consent agenda. Consent agenda items are routinely passed by the city council with little or no discussion from elected officials or the public. However, many of the items have been part of public discussion in the past).

$2 million to be spent on construction items

COUNCIL CHAMBERS — More than $2 million is expected to be spent tonight by the Santa Monica City Council on items relating to construction projects, which are viewed by many residents as necessary evils. The most significant expenditure — $1.77 million — will be used to improve Fourth Street and replace the water main underneath it. The work will be done simultaneously.

There’s nothing left but a bulldozer and dirt in the middle of the Santa Monica Courthouse courtyard. Three modular civil courtrooms were razed to make way for an 11,933-squarefoot building. The modular courtrooms, temporarily built for overflow cases more than a decade ago, are being replaced. The project is expected to cost $4.5 million and take two years to complete.

SM COURTHOUSE — Jurors here awarded $1 million Monday to the mothers of two men killed when an out-of-control driver smashed into a popular bar on Wilshire Boulevard. The jury of seven men and five women deliberated only about an hour before reaching the verdict, which granted $500,000 each to the mothers of Noah Baum, 34, and David Roos, 26. Defendant Eric Red, a 42-yearold movie director, reportedly rear-ended another car before smashing into Q’s Billiard Club and Restaurant at 11835 Wilshire Blvd. in May of 2000. Lawyer attempts to stifle media By Daily Press staff

Nearly 50 copies of the Santa Monica Daily Press were removed Monday from a newsstand in front of the local courthouse because it contained an article about a trial happening inside. Although no one involved in the case claimed responsibility, it appears one of the plaintiff’s attorneys took the papers so jurors wouldn’t see it. See RACK RAID, page 8
