Holocaust survivor shares loss and love BY MELISSA LEU Special to the Daily Press
At 12, Marika Roth understood the true meaning of fear. At 79, she understands the meaning of love. “Hatred and prejudice is like a form of cancer, and that’s what people do. They kill each other for religion, for race, for money … I think honesty and love is the way to go. That’s what gives more strength than anything else,” she said. Born in Budapest, Hungary, Roth is a Holocaust survivor. The Nazis invaded her country when she was 11. “They came into the Jewish protected housing and they took all the men in the house — not the women or the children — just the men. And they took [my father] and deported him to Germany. They shoved him in a truck with dozens of other people. I didn’t know where they [went],” said Roth, who

Samohi wins finale, misses playoffs BY DANIEL ARCHULETA Managing Editor
CORSAIR FIELD The game ended with seniors swarming the field, celebrating a 50-8 win over Hawthorne in the season finale with tears streaming down the faces of many at Santa Monica College on Friday night. The Samohi football team had just won its third-straight Ocean League game, but it was bittersweet as Head Coach Travis Clark said following the game. The team had fin-
ished the season 6-4, an improvement from last year’s 4-6 record, but the mood was somber knowing that it would take a bit of help to qualify for the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section playoffs, which had yet to be announced. That help didn’t come as Culver City defeated Beverly Hills sending Samohi home and its seniors to ponder what could have been. “I don’t want to stop here,” Samohi senior wide receiver Kris Comas said. “I want

St. Monica wins league, secures playoff spot LONG BEACH St. Monica’s football team defeated St. Anthony, 38-0, on Friday to clinch the Santa Fe League title. It is the first league title for St. Monica since 2002. With the win, the Mariners qualify for the CIF-SS playoffs. The Mariners will host Chadwick on Friday. The location of the game has yet to be released. St. Monica finishes the regular season 8-2 overall and 4-0 in league. — DAILY PRESS
