Incumbents, SMRR, sweep races BY MELODY HANATANI Daily Press Staff Writer
DOWNTOWN Robert Kronovet went back to work, Chris Bley was in recovery mode, and Ted Winterer was just ecstatic that Barack Obama became the presidentelect. Less than 24 hours after the election, the “nearly there” cluster of local candidates who narrowly missed out on captur-
ing that last open seat are looking to move on after a long campaign season that ended with the re-election of all the incumbents and another sweep for those backed by Santa Monicans for Renters’ Rights, the city’s most powerful political party. There will be minimal physical changes to the four elected boards as only two newcomers — Ben Allen for the Board of Education and Christopher Braun for the
Rent Control Board — were chosen by voters to serve for the next four years. Both newly-elected officials were selected to serve on boards in which there was at least one seat uncontested by an incumbent. “It’s hard to be down in the dumps because I’m so elated about the presidential election that it trumps any dismay SEE ELECTION PAGE 10

DOWNTOWN It was a bad night for the anti urban development faction, but a good one for supporters of development at Santa Monica College. More than 10 months after the trafficfatigued Santa Monica Coalition for a Livable City (SMCLC) began circulating a petition for Measure T, the controversial, slow-growth initiative that caused divisions among long-time political allies failed on Tuesday. Measure T, which proposed amending City Hall’s general plan to cap commercial development to 75,000 square feet a year, was defeated at the polls, garnering slightly more than 14,100 yes votes to nearly 18,000 nays. The measure was one of three local initiatives that voters faced, including Measure AA, which authorizes a $295 million construction bond for Santa Monica College, and Measure SM, which modernizes the Utility Users Tax. Both Measures AA and SM passed.

WORK IN PROGRESS: Voters approved Measure AA, which authorizes a $295 million construction bond for Santa Monica College. College officials say residents won’t be billed this year.
Measure R, the countywide sales tax initiative that would pay for transit-related projects under the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, also passed. The measure raises the sales tax in the county from 8.25 to 8.75 percent and would pay for
