DOWNTOWN As negative television ads targeting candidates for statewide and national offices blare non-stop during the final days before the election, local races in Santa Monica seem comparatively civil. Still, this laid-back beach town is not immune to election year bad vibes. Take, for example, the low-growth group the Santa Monica Coalition for a Livable City, which is backing three City Council candidates: Kevin McKeown, Ted Winterer and Susan Hartley. In recent days, SMCLC has been distributing fliers urging voters to spurn Pam O’Connor and Terry O’Day, two sitting council members who are seeking new terms. It’s latest ad is headlined, “Meet Terry O’Day, a big developers best friend” and includes the ominous sounding warning, “He’s never opposed a big development in the past, why would he start now?” The group, which in 2008 strongly supported Measure T, the failed initiative that would

St. Monica survives scare from Bell-Jeff BY FARZAD MASHHOOD Special to the Daily Press

CORSAIR FIELD Halloween came a night early for St. Monica’s football team. The St. Monica Mariners beat Bellarmine-Jefferson 16-8 on a Saturday night filled with plenty of spooky calls and plays in the form of penalties and turnovers, not to mention a scary moment where the second-string quarterback went down with an injury. Back-up Sam Holguin, however, would return after just a play on the sideline and the Mariners went on to win the game, improving to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in Santa Fe league play. The Guards fall to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in league. Senior Michael Doherty saved the game for the Mariners with an interception in

the endzone with 48 seconds remaining, denying Bell-Jeff a potential tying touchdown. “I just read it well, I guess,” said Doherty after the game. “That was a key interception. Thank God for that play,” Head Coach Larry Muno said. St. Monica, who did not score after the first quarter, had plenty of chances to build a hefty lead, however, with a pair of interceptions returned for touchdowns being called back on penalties. Also, a pass to senior Jamal Young was wrestled out by BellJeff ’s senior Micah Shirley to force a fumble, one of St. Monica’s eight, at the goal line. “I think we should have scored a lot of

Man dies when boat overturns near pier THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SM BAY Authorities say a man died and another was injured when their boat struck a breakwater and turned over near the Santa Monica Pier. Santa Monica Police Sgt. Thomas Burgess said Sunday both men were thrown into the water and attempted to swim ashore Saturday night. Harbor patrol officers responded and retrieved the men but were unable to resuscitate 52-year-old Lewis Anderson of Anaheim. He was pronounced dead at a hospital. The Los Angeles Times reports the other man, also in his 50s, was treated for hypothermia. His name was not released.
