Area religious leaders call for an end to gang violence BY MELODY HANATANI Daily Press Staff Writer
COLORADO AVE As church bells began ring-
the board, a penalty against the Vikings would give the ball back to Beverly Hills. The Normans would ultimately punt, giving Santa Monica the ball, where again a penalty put an end to a possession. Running back Christian Ross broke free for a would-be 49-yard touchdown only to have it called back due to a hold on the offense. To make matters worse, fullback Drew Hammond fumbled on the next play.
ing and the rain ceased, a group of solemnly-faced faith leaders gave an impassioned plea for peace following a series of gangrelated shootings on the Westside last weekend. The collection of pastors and ministers from various religious institutions gathered at St. Anne’s Catholic Church on Thursday, calling for an end to the violence, asking for respect during the All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day commemorations this weekend, which coincide with Dia de los Muertos. “This is a very important time for people to believe in Christ and to remember their loved one ones,” Pastor Michael Gutierrez of St. Anne’s Catholic Church said. Standing alongside religious leaders were relatives of 25-year-old Guillermo Lopez who was shot and killed in Mar Vista on Oct. 25. His 19-year-old brother was wounded. The victim’s family is part of the St. Anne congregation. His relatives asked the community to come together to stop the violence. Lopez, who worked in landscaping, is survived by his wife, Hilda Aguayo, and their two children. “He was a nice guy,” his father-in-law, Reggie Aguayo, said. “He would always have a smile on his face.” The victim’s parents were unable to attend the meeting because they were at a car wash fundraiser to help pay funeral costs. A second car wash fundraiser will be held at St. Anne’s on Saturday morning. The act of violence took Aguayo and the Lopez family by surprise, having lived in the neighborhood for more than a decade and never feeling as though they were unsafe. The shooting reportedly took place at a parking lot on the corner of Washington Place and Wade Street, about a block away from where Lopez lived. Two Hispanic male suspects, described as being between the ages of 18-20, approached the two victims, asking where they were from, a question tra-

No rest for the weary Samohi hopes to regroup against Culver City BY DANIEL ARCHULETA Managing Editor
SAMOHI Losing a football game isn’t the end of the world, but it can sure take the wind out of a team’s sails. Having amassed a 6-0 record, Santa Monica High School went into last week’s game against Beverly Hills High School pumped up and ready to go. Four quarters later, the team limped off the Corsair Field turf having lost 10-26, left to ponder what
could have been. “It was a rough one,” head coach Zach Cuda said. “We got off to a great start, but we hit a tough stretch of penalties and turned the ball over. “We never recovered from it.” There were two penalties in particular that put a damper on the game for Samohi. Having built a 10-0 first-quarter lead, Vikings linebacker Luke Zelon intercepted a pass and appeared to run it back for a touchdown. Instead of putting points on
