City Council caps 5 and 10K races at three BY DAVID MARK SIMPSON Daily Press Staff Writer

CITYWIDE Following a fiscal year that saw six road-closing races held in Santa Monica,

City Council limited the annual number of 5 and 10K races to three. Previously, City Hall allowed eight 5 and 10K races to be held in the city annually. Five such races were held in Santa Monica last year. Additionally, the Los Angeles Marathon

ends in Santa Monica. For four straight months, from February through May, a race was held in Santa Monica this year. “Residents and businesses have expressed concerns about the number of races being held in the city as they are impacted by street

closures, lack of parking and noise,” said Kathy LePrevost, recreation manager. Santa Monica offers a few different routes, but every route affects sections of SEE RACES PAGE 9

CULVER CITY And then there was one. Coming into the game tied for first place in the Ocean League, Culver City and Santa Monica battled through four quarters only to find themselves facing overtime to seize control of the league on Friday at Culver City. After failing to score on their first possession, the Samohi Vikings were forced to play defense and hope they could stop Culver City, giving them one more shot to win. Culver City wasn’t having it. Quarterback Armani Rodgers confidently led his Centaurs to the three-yard line where kicker Nico Melendez nailed a field goal that gave Culver City (4-4) a 3-0 league record and a firm grasp of first place. The loss sent Samohi to 2-1 in league and 4-4 overall. “We should have had that one,” said Samohi head coach Travis Clark. “This is frustrating.” The fact that Samohi even forced an overtime was a victory of sorts. Culver City’s defense dominated the first half, giving the Centaurs a 14-0 lead at the intermission. With a passing game that was struggling, Clark went almost exclusively to the run giving senior running back Kwame Duggins plenty of chances to lead the offense back into the game.

Police officers will soon be sporting new badges. The redesigned, full-color badge will restore the image of City Hall, which had been missing for the last decade after former Chief Jim Butts chose to include an image of the Public Safety Facility to commemorate the opening of the building, which houses the SMPD, Santa Monica Fire Department and Santa Monica Jail. “The new badge embodies the department’s rich past, and acknowledges current attributes, while giving a nod to the bright future,” Deputy Chief Al Venegas wrote in an information item to the City Council. Officers have worn the current shield since 2003. Funding for the new badge — $50,000 — was approved by the City Council in 2007 after officials learned that City Hall was no longer featured. That irked some members of the council, including the late Ken Genser, who felt that residents and visitors needed a recognizable symbol on the badge. No action was taken until this year when the SMPD moved to redesign the shield to include the recently restyled City Hall, which now features its original paint job. Artists’ renderings were used to assist in the design process. Samples were circulated throughout the SMPD so that rank-and-file could give their opinions and make recommendations, Venegas said. The final design continues to be in the shape of a shield. The shield symbolizes that its wearer is a protector of the peace and all people, Venegas said. In uniform, the
