Perfection in the mix Samohi heads into key Ocean League matchup undefeated BY DANIEL ARCHULETA Managing Editor

“Neither of those allocations of personnel are ideal,” Ben Franz-Knight, the executive director of the PRC, said. “The ideal scenario is to put in a half light that could be activated … so we wouldn’t have to use people for what a traffic light could do.” A decision as to whether to place a traffic light at the exit would ultimately have to be made by Caltrans, which has jurisdiction over the highway. The study would look into creating some justification for Caltrans
a team a long way. As Santa Monica High School prepares to host Beverly Hills tonight in a key Ocean League matchup, it has been the Vikings’ defense that has paced the team to a perfect 6-0 (1-0) record. The defensive unit led by a strong corps of linebackers has given up a paltry 39 points all season and most recently limited Morningside High School to an astounding minus 12 yards on offense to open league play with a 51-0 victory last week. “When you are sitting at week six having given up 39 points, we feel pretty good,” defensive coordinator Conrad Cuda said. “This is the most aggressive group of guys we’ve had at Santa Monica.” It’s not that the offense hasn’t been lighting up the scoreboard — the team has tallied 201 points — but it is defense that wins games and keeps teams relevant come the postseason. “I think we are playing with a lot of confidence right now,” head coach Zach Cuda said. “We have some huge games ahead of us here. These are our league rivals and traditionally the toughest teams in our league.” This week’s opponent, Beverly Hills, comes into the contest riding a four-game winning streak and is 4-2 on the season and 1-0 in league play. The Vikings head coach is aware that the Normans have been hot of late, but his team’s momentum should mitigate the challenge. “We have two teams riding a pretty good wave,” Zach Cuda said. “We’re set up for a heck of a ball game.” Zach Cuda sees a number of similarities between the two teams. Much like the Normans, Samohi likes to grind it out with an array of effective running backs, including senior Christian Ross, who ran for 165 yards and scored three rushing touchdowns

PENDING: Months after the City Council decided to set aside $200,000 for a traffic light signal study for the 1440 Pacific Coast Highway lot, which is just north of the Santa Monica Pier, the Pier Restoration Corp. board recently decide to urge City Hall to move forward with the analysis.
Pier board urges study to consider traffic light BY MELODY HANATANI Daily Press Staff Writer
PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY Safety challenges that drivers face when exiting a parking lot here and entering high-speed traffic could lead to the installation of a half-signal, a move that could face resistance from neighbors. Months after the City Council decided to set aside $200,000 for a traffic light signal study for the 1440 Pacific Coast Highway lot, which is just north of the Santa Monica
Pier, the Pier Restoration Corp. board recently decide to urge City Hall to move forward with the analysis. The exit for the 1440 lot has long been an issue for drivers and vendors on the pier who have concerns about the safety of their customers as they attempt to leave the lot. When attempts to depart the lot seem futile, a parking attendant will either come out and wave cars onto a narrow lane or the Santa Monica Police Department will deploy a unit to create a traffic break, which most often occurs during special events.
