THE PROTECTING SMILES ISSUE

Dentist offers cash for candy BY ELIZABETH KENIGSBERG Special to the Daily Press

DEFENDER OF TEETH: Dr. Kari Sakurai, a dentist who has been practicing in her Wilshire Boulevard office for more than 10 years, has teamed

WILSHIRE BLVD There’s a new tooth fairy in town, but she doesn’t want you to lose your teeth — in fact, she wants you to keep them and make sure they’re healthy. Dr.Kari Sakurai,a dentist who has been practicing in her Wilshire Boulevard office for more than 10 years, has teamed up with Operation Gratitude in an effort to “get candy off the streets” and keep children’s mouths clean. “Ditch the candy,” Sakurai said. “Visiting your dentist twice a year and brushing daily are great preventative measures, but doing away with excess sweets altogether would really give your teeth a healthy boost.” This year, Sakurai will be trading candy for cash. Children around the neighborhood can come the day following Halloween, hand in their sweets gathered from trick-or-treating and get a dollar per every pound donated, in addition to a glow-in-the-dark electric toothbrush. The money will come out of Sakurai’s own pocket, and the candy will then be shipped to troops overseas through Operation Gratitude, a non-profit organization based in Van Nuys. “It’s just a huge success,” Carolyn Blashek, the founder of Operation Gratitude, said about the Halloween candy buyback. “Last year we got literally a ton of candy, maybe even more. This year I expect to get two tons.” The Halloween candy buyback started three years ago with a dentist in Wisconsin,

up with Operation Gratitude in an effort to ‘get candy off the streets’ and keep children’s teeth healthy. Sakurai will give kids $1 for every pound of Halloween candy they bring in. The candy will be donated to troops overseas, who will then pass it on to children in Iraq and Afghanistan.

COMMUNITYPROFILES NATALIE DEWBERRY

Role model retires with pride BY MELODY HANATANI Daily Press Staff Writer

SANTA MONICA BEACH Slowing her pace, the words of encouragement began flowing out of Officer Natalie Dewberry’s mouth, hoping to inspire a clearly exhausted young girl to finish the last leg of a three-mile-long bike ride. The goal — an ice cream treat at the destination and the pride from completing a lengthy trek just weeks after taking off the training wheels. “I’m tired,I’m dehydrated,” Lily Reynaldo said. “You’re 8 years old,” Dewberry responded as she rode alongside Reynaldo. “You don’t know how to spell dehydrated.”

The two cyclists, who were riding as part of the Police Activities League’s Cycle Zone Program, finally arrived at their destination where the rest of their group awaited, all rising to a standing ovation to congratulate a young 8-year-old girl who knows no limits. The August bike ride was one of those career-affirming moments for Dewberry, one on which she fondly recalls when reflecting on her 20-year-run with the Santa Monica Police Department from which she will retire in mid-December. The officer, who works with children at the Police Activities League (PAL), which is a
