Several psychics are hard at work advising Australian business executives, providing such things as “intuitive diagnostics” of personnel systems and detecting “blockages” of the organizational structure (for hourly fees as high as the equivalent of US$290), according to a June report in Sydney’s Sunday Telegraph. Psychic Sally de Beche advises clients based on her “holographic images” of the business cycle, and another, Stacey Demarco, a self-described “witch” (and author of the book “There’s a Witch in the Boardroom"), builds business networks that she terms “covens.”

TODAY IN HISTORY Today is the 293rd day of 2005. There are 72 days left in the year. On Oct. 20, 1944, during World War II, Gen. Douglas MacArthur stepped ashore at Leyte in the Philippines, 2 1/2 years after he’d said, “I shall return.” In 1892, the city of Chicago dedicated the World’s Columbian Exposition. In 1903, a joint commission ruled in favor of the United States in a boundary dispute between the District of Alaska and Canada.

Buyer’s remorse: Renters are in zone BY MICHAEL LIEDTKE

SAN FRANCISCO — While the cost of buying a home has continued to soar during the past year, renting an apartment remained a relative bargain throughout the West’s major markets, according to a report to be released Thursday. As of Sept. 30, apartment rents had either declined slightly or increased by less than 4 percent during the past year in 16 of the West’s 20 largest markets surveyed by RealFacts Inc., a Novato-based research firm. Even the hottest rental markets, southern California and southern Nevada, looked mild compared to the rapidly rising sales price of homes.

CITYWIDE — A lawsuit regarding an unendorsed $1 million check from Los Angeles County to the Big Blue Bus, stolen from the US postal system and cashed in a Colorado bank, may soon be settled out of court. In August of 2002, attorneys with Santa Monica and Los Angeles County successfully entered into a Colorado lawsuit between the two banks that handled and cashed the check worth $1,075,408.08. More than three years later, City Hall said it may settle the case by next week, according to Jeanette Schachtner,

Santa Monica environmentalists filed suit against the U.S. Navy Wednesday, claiming that its most widely used form of sonar disturbs and even kills whales and dolphins, which sometimes beach themselves to escape the noise. The new lawsuit by the Natural Resources Defense Council, located on Second Street in downtown Santa Monica, and other plaintiffs seeks a court order to curb midfrequency sonar, the Navy’s most common method of detecting enemy submarines. The sonar “is capable of flooding thousands of square miles of
