Helping students help themselves Foundation formed following student’s death plans to bring free tutoring to SMMUSD BY ASHLEY ARCHIBALD Daily Press Staff Writer

DISTRICTWIDE A nonprofit organization established in memory of a former Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District stu-

dent aims at increasing access to specialized tutors for students with learning challenges. Ellen Shane, whose daughter died in a car crash last April, presented the concept to the Board of Education at its meeting Thursday. Ellen Shane’s daughter Emily Shane, a

former eighth grader in Malibu, was struck by a car and killed while walking down the 29000 block of the Pacific Coast Highway. The man charged with hitting her, Sina Khankhanian, will go to trial on a murder charge later this month.

Since her daughter’s death, Ellen and her husband Michel Shane sought ways to honor their daughter’s memory by giving back to others. SEE SHANE PAGE 10

CITY HALL Even as cities look for ways to conserve precious dollars, costs on essentials are going up. The City Council will be asked to approve a $17.3 million expenditure on health contracts for municipal employees for the 2012 calendar year, an 11 percent increase from the year before. Gallagher Insurance Services, Inc., a feebased insurance brokerage firm, negotiates insurance rates for City Hall. After discovering that CIGNA, the company that currently provides medical insurance, was projected to raise fees by approximately 19.6 percent, city officials asked Gallagher to put out a request for proposal and reach out to Aetna, the previous carrier.
