Council approves tiered fire inspection fees Feds to seek new BY ASHLEY ARCHIBALD Daily Press Staff Writer
CITYWIDE Fire inspections for commercial businesses got an overhaul Tuesday night when the City Council approved a tiered system meant to reflect the actual amount of resources it takes to inspect a property.
The result: higher fees for large commercial properties and lower ones for the small stores that take relatively little time to inspect. It replaces the $131 flat fee that had been imposed on all commercial properties, no matter the square footage. The new fees, which take effect immediately, are broken down into four tiers based on
the number of square feet in each building. Individual suites or units 2,000 square feet and below will be charged $73, $146 for those up to 5,000 square feet, $219 for up to 10,000 square feet and $365 for anything above that.

BOSTON Federal prosecutors plan to seek a new indictment against the longtime girlfriend of former Boston crime boss James "Whitey" Bulger. That information was disclosed in a written status report prosecutors filed Wednesday in federal court, reviewed by The Associated Press. Catherine Greig (Grehg) already has been indicted for allegedly helping Bulger elude authorities after he fled Boston in late 1994, just before he was indicted on racketeering charges. The couple was apprehended in Santa Monica in June after spending more than 16 years on the run. Greig's lawyers and prosecutors are expected to present a status report to a judge in court Thursday. The filing by prosecutors says the government "anticipates seeking a superseding indictment in the future." No other details were provided. Greig is charged with conspiracy to harbor and conceal a fugitive. She has pleaded not guilty.
Obama administration approves big loan for local solar company MATTHEW DALY Associated Press
WASHINGTON A Santa Monica-based solar company will receive a hefty loan for projects slated for Arizona and Nevada. The loans, approved by the Energy Department on Wednesday, total more than $1 billion. The approval comes two days before the expiration date of a program that has become a rallying cry for Republican critics of the Obama administration's green energy program. Energy Secretary Steven Chu said the department has completed a $737 million loan guarantee to Tonopah Solar Energy for a 110 megawatt solar tower on federal land near Tonopah, Nev., and a $337 million guarantee for Mesquite Solar 1 to develop a 150 megawatt solar plant near Phoenix. The loans were approved under the same program that paid for a $528 million loan to Solyndra Inc., a California solar panel maker that went bankrupt after receiving the money and laid off 1,100 workers. Solyndra is under investigation by the FBI and is the focal point of House hearings on the program. SolarReserve LLC, of Santa Monica, the parent company for Tonopah, is privately held. The Energy Department said its rules prevented it from discussing the company's financial information. Sempra Energy of San Diego, which owns Mesquite, is publicly held. Energy Department spokesman Damien LaVera said the two projects had extensive reviews that included scrutiny of the parent companies' finances. Chu said the Nevada project would produce enough electricity to power more than

VALENCIA, Calif. Samohi’s Travis Clark hopes the third time is the charm against Valencia. After falling to the vaunted Valencia program two years in a row, Santa Monica High School’s third-year head coach is thinking this could be Samohi’s time to exorcise those demons and put his team on the map. “I’m a lot more comfortable than before,” Clark said. “Just getting ready for the big game this week.” SEE SAMOHI PAGE 10
