DISTRICT HDQTRS. — School officials on Thursday will weigh in on consultant bids to create a district-wide growth plan that will likely include a new bond measure. The measure, if approved by vot-
ers, would support future improvements to educational facilities. Eight firms have responded to the district’s recent request for proposals, with proposed consultant fees ranging from $400,000 to $2 million to cover the cost of organizing the facilities’ master plan. The Santa Monica-Malibu
Unified School District’s board of education will make requests to staff regarding parameters for a consultant, which will be responsible for creating a facilities’ master plan that will direct future school structure improvements for the next 10 to 20 years. The first rain in months washed the streets clean, but the refuse landed near the Pico storm drain on Santa Monica Beach Tuesday.

Britain’s Church Mission Society, with 200 missionaries around the world, decided recently that a place that needs one the most is the town of Telford, England (population 150,000), where fewer than one in a hundred residents attends an Anglican church. (Said a CMS spokesman, “These days the CMS goes to the hard places and takes on the hard cases.”) (The Church of England might have a larger problem, according to a July survey by Bangor University researchers: 3 percent of its clergy doubts the existence of God, which works out to nearly 300 non-believing ministers.)

determine if bonds might be levied to support the plan, school officials said. In particular, the board of education will be asked to request an acceptable fee range for the master plan development, review the timeline for the project and prioritize which consultants may be
to encourage collaboration between the institutions on research projects, educational programs and staff recruitment. One of the goals of the partnership will be to foster joint research projects focusing on the challenges facing the greater Los Angeles area. “This partnership brings together two leading research institutions

In the past week, nearly 100 people have come from Hurricane Katrina territory seeking help from the Santa Monica chapter of the Red Cross. Since the hurricane hit more than three weeks ago, the Santa Monica chapter has opened 107 displaced persons cases, representing some 150 individuals. In the last week alone, 80 families, couples or individuals have relocated to the Santa Monica area and turned to the Santa Monica chapter for aid and services until they can get on their feet. “Many of them have driven here on their own. A few have taken buses or found other means to travel here. The displaced persons are primarily from Louisiana and Mississippi,” said chapter executive director John Pacheco. The majority of the Hurricane Katrina victims are staying with family, friends and relatives. “The chapter has found hotels or motels for 27 families and individuals and has issued over $52,000 in direct financial aid to displaced persons for food, clothing, medicine, housing expenses and other necessities,” Pacheco said. “About 90 percent of the victims being serviced by the Santa Monica chapter plan to permanently relocate to the Los Angeles area if they can find See RED CROSS, page 6
