Erik K. Low, 37, was convicted of manslaughter in Salt Lake City in June for fatally shooting a friend who had just moments before given him a “wedgie.” And Judy Castillo-Thomas, 29, was actually acquitted of manslaughter in July in Brooklyn, N.Y., even though she admitted accidentally stabbing her husband to death after he had beat her and taunted her for having buttocks that were “too small.”

TODAY IN HISTORY Today is the 255th day of 2005. There are 110 days left in the year. On Sept. 12, 1609, English explorer Henry Hudson sailed into the river that now bears his name. In 1943, German paratroopers took Benito Mussolini from the hotel where he was being held by the Italian government. In 1944, during World War II, U.S. Army troops entered Germany for the first time, near Trier. In 1953, Massachusetts Sen. John F. Kennedy married Jacqueline Lee Bouvier in Newport, R.I. In 1974, Emperor Haile Selassie was deposed by Ethiopia’s military, after ruling for 58 years.

STATE
Yo, brah, these cities are so bubbles! BY MARTHA MENDOZA Associated Press Writer
SACRAMENTO — Two state bills, passed last week and aimed at reducing obesity among students, are being watched by district officials, who haven’t determined what changes, if any, they’ll need to make to the kinds of foods they provide. See SCHOOL FOOD, page 6
Colby Evett: Santa Monica’s model citizen BY ROBERT FATURECHI
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Brah, the suits are acting like groms! (Translation from surf slang: My friend, government officials are acting like children!) For about 15 years, Santa Cruz in the north and Huntington Beach in the south have both called themselves “Surf City.” But late last year Huntington Beach made a legal move to trademark the name “Surf City USA” after the 1963 Jan and Dean hit. Santa Cruz refused to be snaked. The city filed objections. And strumming his guitar on a local cable access channel, Mayor Mike Rotkin publicly taunted Huntington Beach, musically challenging them to a surf-off: “Let’s have a contest bring your sticks, but leave See SURF CITY, page 9

Colby Evett never learned how to separate business from pleasure, so he combined the two. For nearly 60 years, he’s turned a longtime passion — model airplanes — into his livelihood, selling neighborhood kids and kidsat-heart the miniature wings, engines and propellers they need to fly. His Santa Monica store, Evett’s Model Shop, is something of a childhood fantasy itself. “This is his sanctuary,” said Evett’s wife, Yvonne, 71. Suspended from the shop’s ceiling are tiny fliers, all shiny and polished, of ruby red, sky blue, army olive and desert tan. Evett — an 85-year-old with gold-rimmed glasses and a red apron — greets his customers with a warmth his regulars say keeps him in business.

“I’ve been able to stay because I don’t need a profit anymore to stay,” Evett said. “I just enjoy working with my people.” For almost six decades, Evett’s Model Shop has survived rising rent, thinning interest in the hobby and the pop-up of mega-sized franchise hobby stores that more often than not put mom-and-pop joints like Evett’s to rest. “It’s the last of its breed,”
