Can deciphering your doctor’s notes improve care? BY LAURAN NEERGAARD AP Medical Writer
WASHINGTON Don’t be offended if your doctor writes that you’re SOB, or that an exam detected BS. The aim is to help, not insult: A project is beginning to test if patients fare better when given fast electronic access to more of their medical chart — the detailed notes that doctors record about you during and after every visit. You just might have to look up some of the technical jargon, like those abbreviations for “shortness of breath” and “bowel sounds.” Didn’t know about those notes? Researchers involved in the “OpenNotes” project say they are surprised at how many patients don’t. “You really have to be a partner with your doctor to do well,” says Dr. Tom Delbanco of SEE NOTES PAGE 9

Despite parking concerns, AMC gets support from commission BY NICK TABOREK Daily Press Staff Writer
CITY HALL The concept for a state-of-the art movie theater on Fourth Street is headed to the City Council for initial approval, following a unanimous sign-off on AMC Entertainment’s plans for the project by the Planning Commission Wednesday night. The commission made a couple of recommendations about the proposed design for the 12-screen theater but agreed the project is a needed step to boost lagging
ticket sales in Santa Monica’s Downtown, where the four existing theaters have lost ground to newer, more deluxe theaters elsewhere in the region. The proposed theater would replace Parking Structure No. 3, the City Hallowned facility on Fourth Street near Arizona Avenue. The proposed complex would be 83,000 square feet with 2,197 total seats and 2,100 square feet of retail space. It would include a restaurant and feature a 3D IMAX screen. forward, commissioners raised questions about a lack of detail in the preliminary plans over how to replace 324 parking spaces that would be eliminated by replacing the parking structure with a movie theater. City Hall recently paid $41 million for 67,000 square feet at the corner of Fifth Street and Arizona Avenue — a possible future site for a mixed-use project that could include a subterranean parking
Parks Commissioner Phil Brock would like his 82-year-old mother to feel safe riding her bike down Arizona Avenue to reach Santa Monica’s Downtown Farmers’ Market. But with a dedicated bike lane that ends before reaching the market — not to mention inadequate signs letting motorists know the road should be shared with cyclists — he said Santa Monica is a far cry from being the bike friendly city he envisions. “We need to do a much better job,” he said. That’s why he and fellow Recreation and Parks Commissioner Richard McKinnon, a bike advocate, are getting set to host a series of planning meetings aimed at empowering the cycling community and urging City Hall to make the streets friendlier for bike riders. Also on their list of priorities: creating a
