LOS ANGELES The event that many feared would be the “Carmageddon” of epic traffic jams cruised calmly to a finish Sunday, with bridge work on the Los Angeles roadway completed nearly a full day ahead of schedule and officials reopening a 10-mile stretch of the busy freeway. Drivers honked their horns and waved from car windows as traffic started moving in all 10 lanes of Interstate 405 just after noon for the first time since being shut down at midnight Friday. There were no major problems since the freeway was closed, and the biggest worry of all — that the work would spill into the area’s always rough Monday morning commute, was set aside. L.A. SM PIER Hey there, sailor.
Special to the Daily Press
For the first time in almost two decades, Santa Monica will take part in a week-long celebration of the men in white when 4,400 active duty sailors descend on Los Angeles County for a schedule of public relations events and well-deserved R&R. The ship returned to its home base in Everett, Wash. after a six-month deployment in the Persian Gulf before coming to Southern California, Chief Anthony Briggs, spokesperson for the Navy, wrote in an email. The visit is part of Navy Week, an annual event that usually includes a single ship of active-duty sailors fresh off of a tour of duty. It comes at the request of City Councilman Bob Holbrook, who specifically
DOWNTOWN Ana Jara has dedicated the better part of her adult life to mentoring Santa Monica youth; now, she’s asking her community to help her realize her dreams. Jara, 31, was recently accepted to George Washington University and plans to pursue a master’s degree in public policy. As a woman dedicated to shaping the lives of underprivileged, disenfranchised kids, she hopes to use her institutional knowledge to affect change in City Hall, empowering youth and giving them direction. Yet, GWU is historically one of the most expensive universities in the country, and as someone who dedicates a great portion of her life to nonprofit work, Jara racked her brains about raising funds. With the support of fellow community activists, Jara’s family and friends are putting
