■ Many British churches have recently installed the new Hymnal Plus, a karaoke machine to help congregations recite verses and sing hymns (including risky tunes, such as a disco version of “Amazing Grace"). ■ A violent video game based on the evangelical “Left Behind” novels, “Left Behind: Eternal Forces,” was introduced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles in May, and features the Tribulation Force bloodily battling the army of the Antichrist. Reviews have been severely mixed (either a positive step to spiritualize the video games culture, or grotesque violence seemingly sanctioned under the cover of the Bible).

Plan general: City fills void with new hire

CITY HALL — Yes, Virginia, the city has a new planning director. More than a year after their director of planning and community development stepped down, city officials announced on Friday that they have hired a replacement in Eileen Fogarty, who is due to leave a comparable post in Alexandria, Va., in mid-September and take over in Santa Monica. The vacancy, created when Suzanne Frick resigned in March 2005 to accept a similar position in Long Beach, has been a sore spot among many city officials eager to move forward with the city’s general plan — setting guidelines for controlling city development over the decades to come. As a result, City Manager Lamont Ewell made hiring a planning director his top personnel priority when he took over his post in January. For Fogarty, the Santa Monica position represents a return to California, after having served as planning director in Santa Cruz from September 1996 until accepting the Alexandria position in November 2000. With the Santa Monica post marking her third planning position in 10 years, Fogarty insisted on Friday that she comes to the city with intent of remaining for the long haul. “Every place that I’ve been, I’ve stayed for quite a while,” said

VIRGINIA AVE. PARK — The owners of Santa Monica Place are taking it to the streets this summer, gauging residents’ feelings about their proposed overhaul of the aging, indoor shopping center. Macerich Co. representatives on Thursday unveiled their latest conceptual plans for the mall to the Pico Neighborhood Association (PNA) — the fourth meeting of more than a dozen planned presentations in front of community groups through September. After gathering feedback and tweaking the project, if necessary, Macerich Co. will then take its proposal to city officials, who have not seen the latest incarnation. The approach is in stark contrast to last time around, when Macerich Co. in late 2004 proposed plans to demolish the mall and replace it with a 10-acre mixed-use complex, including three 21-story high-rise towers for offices and condominiums. The plan was strongly opposed by residents, who said the buildings would not only be out of step with Santa Monica’s small-town atmosphere, but would also have created
