Lions’ almost out of the gate New development agreement to go before SM City Council BY ASHLEY ARCHIBALD Daily Press Staff Writer

CITY HALL Lionsgate, the independent entertainment house responsible for hits like “Mad Men,” and Academy-Award winner “Crash,” took a step toward remaining in Santa Monica for the long haul when planning commissioners Wednesday night gave hesitant approval to a development agreement that would put the company’s prospective new headquarters on the 2800 block of Colorado Avenue. The commission approved the agreement, with conditions, on advice from Deputy City Attorney Barry Rosenbaum, who said that a denial would still go before the City Council, but that the conditions placed on the project would hold less weight. Commissioners saw, for the first time, the newest iteration of what has become a twobuilding project set near not only two other developments that are working toward agreements, but also a residential neighbor-

Man accused of killing actor’s ex-girlfriend faces new charges

Bulger’s girlfriend expected to seek bail DENISE LAVOIE

BY KEVIN HERRERA Editor in Chief

DOWNTOWN A Santa Monica man already accused of killing actor Ashton Kutcher’s former girlfriend and another woman was charged in an arrest warrant late Wednesday in the 1993 brutal stabbing death of a Chicago-area teen. Michael Thomas Gargiulo, 35, an air condition repairman who has also been charged with the attempted murder of a Santa Monica woman, stabbed 18-year-old Tricia Lynn Pacaccio as she tried to enter her parents’ home in Glenview, Ill., officials with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office said. Pacaccio had 12 stab wounds to her torso

and sustained a broken arm in the attack on Aug. 14, 1993, according to the arrest warrant. Pacaccio’s body was discovered by her father a few hours after the murder. She was fully clothed and her purse and keys were found by her body. Police said there were no signs of a robbery attempt. At the time, detectives said they believed the killer had been waiting for Pacaccio to return home that night. They called the slaying a crime of passion and said they were certain she knew her attacker. In the hours before her death, police said Pacaccio was seen with friends participating in a scavenger hunt with 50 to 60 people. She then went to a restaurant to socialize before heading home. She was killed a week before she was due at Purdue

University, where she planned to study engineering and environmental issues. In her highschool yearbook, she said she wanted to “save the world,” according to a report in the GARGIULO Chicago Tribune. Police said they had DNA evidence extracted from Pacaccio’s fingernails that led them to Gargiulo in 2003, but they could not determine if that DNA came from casual contact he had with her by havSEE CHARGES PAGE 8

BOSTON The longtime girlfriend of former Boston crime boss James “Whitey” Bulger was by his side when he was finally captured in Santa Monica last month after more than 16 years on the run. Next week, prosecutors are expected to argue that Catherine Greig’s years on the lam with one of the nation’s most wanted fugitives make her a flight risk if she is released on bail. But some legal analysts say Greig has a chance of being released if her lawyer can find a way to separate her conduct from Bulger’s. SEE BULGER PAGE 7 BACK OR UNFILED
