Osborn asks supporters to help pay debts Expensive campaign for the 50th Assembly District ran almost $30,000 over

DOWNTOWN Former 50th Assembly District candidate Torie Osborn reached out to her supporters Tuesday for help settling an

almost $30,000 debt from her failed campaign.

Osborn, a Santa Monican, came in last in the tight race for the seat, falling less than 1,000 votes behind front-runner Assemblywoman Betsy Butler (D-53),

according to county election officials.

Butler and Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom will appear in the general election in November.

Osborn and Butler raised significant amounts of money for the race, ultimately

outspending Bloom almost four times over, by Bloom’s own estimates.

Twilight Concert Series kicks off Surfer dude Donavon Frankenreiter brings his laid-back style to the beach

SM PIER Summer evenings in our city by the sea are the best.

Where else but Santa Monica can you listen as the waves gently break, watch as the summer sun slowly sets and join in singing

as music rings out from the Santa Monica Pier — still one of the most incomparable settings in which to take in a free concert.

Kicking off this year’s 28th edition of the Twilight Concert Series today is Donavon Frankenreiter; a laid-back surfer and troubadour — and though currently based in Hawaii — he’s still the personification of

breezy Southern California coastal living.

In fact, his new album, his fifth, is even entitled “Start Livin’” — the impetus of which came from the title track of one of the songs on the record.

“We didn’t think about the recording too much; we were really just livin’ in the moment. We went in [the studio] and tried it

and just had a lot of fun, recording two songs a day,” Frankenreiter said with a chuckle.

Frankenreiter returned to his southern California roots to join up with his longtime bassist Matt Grundy to work on a record they recorded in a mere seven days. This SEE CONCERT PAGE 9

The force behind Make-A-Wish

SM PIER Hundreds of Princess Leias and Luke Skywalkers will convene with Darth Vaders and rebel pilots on the Santa Monica Pier this Saturday.

Don’t fret — this is not an intergalactic war. This is Course of the Force, a unique five-day relay complete with lightsabers and Jabba the Hutt’s floating sail barge resting on a flatbed truck.

Proceeds from the event, which is held in partnership with Lucasfilm, Ltd., Nerdist Industries and Octagon, will go to the MakeA-Wish Foundation, and 400 lightsaber wielding participants are expected.

It will commence with the gathering of a multitude of “Star Wars” and sci-fi characters at a “Conival” just above the beach, and end in San Diego on July 11, the day before the beginning of the comic book convention Comic-Con, a sort of holy grail of scifi culture.

This is the first time that any event of this kind has occurred, organizers said, and the best comparison would be an Olympic torch relay.

“It's going to be this traveling mass of fun with people dressing up in costumes,” Peter Levin, CEO of Nerdist Industries and creator and executive director of Course of the Force, said.

Levin, a Santa Monica native, conceived the event and reached out to Lucasfilm and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He was greatly motivated by his passion for “Star Wars,” Comic-Con and all things sci-fi, which is exhibited by his and his family’s inspired costuming for the event: Levin, his wife Gia, his 6-year-old son Grayden and his two bulldogs Gigi and Lily will be dressed as Boba Fett, Princess Leia, Anakin Skywalker

“Well I'm going to my 18th Comic-Con this year and it was before last year’s ComicCon that the idea popped into my brain,” Levin said. “How do we extend the ComicCon experience? Let's create the yellow brick road on the way to Oz.” Levin will be accompanied down this road by his high school friend and fellow Santa Monica native Glyn Milburn.

Milburn, a former NFL player, will be attending the event with his 6-year-old son Aaron, both clad in TIE fighter pilot outfits.

“Glyn and I went to [Santa Monica High School] together, so the fact that we’re start-

ing this at the pier where I took my oceanography class at 7:30 a.m. during high school is really just icing on the cake,” Levin said.

“Part of what we’re doing is getting celebrities and athletes who come from these areas to participate, and as someone who grew up with Glyn, I know how much he means to Santa Monica and he was such a great role model, going off to Stanford and having such a great career with the NFL, so he was a natural fit for this event.”

Milburn was also on the board of the Ronald McDonald House Charities and participated in many events with them and the Special Olympics. His charitable work as

well as his love of “Star Wars” motivated him to participate in the event.

“I’m a huge ‘Star Wars’ fan and I remember watching it in theaters at the end of the ’70s as a young kid,” Milburn said. “I’m passionate about fitness, and for me it was a nobrainer to be able to run part of a course with my son. Peter and I have been friends since high school so it’s great to do something with him and to help contribute to a worthy cause as well.”

It was with great amusement that I read Sara Meric’s letter (“Move to Saudi Arabia,” Letters to the Editor, July 3). She is right that we have the “right” to teach our children about God — rights and the American way. She says that we have our “blankey” to keep us feeling warm and comfortable. Sara has her own way of keeping warm. It is called “delusion.”

Sara sounds like an educated woman. She has the right to write her opinion in to the newspaper. Too bad, she doesn’t realize that in Saudi Arabia she, as a woman, would not have the right to express her opinion, would not be allowed to go to school, would not be free to marry whomever she wished and so on and so on. I find it funny that the 14 percent of Americans who are atheists feel threatened by the 86 percent of Americans that believe in a supreme being. Too bad, Sara, that people like you just can’t live with people like me who have faith. Maybe it is you who needs to move!

Preparing for a vacation requires more than packing DEAR LIFE MATTERS,

I will be taking a three week vacation later this summer. While I am really excited about getting away from the office, I am already dreading what I might come back to because unfortunately my work does not take a break when I do. I would like your recommendations as to what I can do now to make the transition back to the office as smooth as possible.

Taking a break from work is beneficial to both your work productivity and your personal well-being. Being able to truly shutoff and relax during your time away from the office is especially important. I am glad to hear that you are already thinking about steps you can take now to make the most of your time off.

Start by clearing out your inbox. Filing away old e-mails and categorizing your messages can be a great way to organize yourself before taking off. Just imagine how great it will feel to leave for vacation with an empty inbox! This will also make it easier once you return to the office as you will only need to deal with new messages that have come in during your time away.

Like your inbox, cleaning off your desk before you leave will help you feel more relaxed when you return. Take time to evaluate your current organizational and filing system to make sure that you are placing paperwork in the space that makes the most sense. Any articles or projects that are still pending should be labeled and placed in a file to be tackled upon your return.

Schedule a team meeting to discuss pending projects and establish who will take over your parts of the project during your absence. Consider what role others on your team might be able to play while you are gone and make sure they have all the resources and materials to move things forward. In addition, consider what steps you can take to close out any pending projects before your departure. A week prior to your trip consider sending follow-up calls or emails to colleagues or clients you are waiting to hear back on and make mention of your pending trip to ensure they take quick action on your request.

Determine the tasks that need to be done upon your return before you depart. In the

days leading up to your departure, consider compiling a to-do list of things you need to work on when you return from vacation.

Include details of what you are currently working on and the current status of each project. Writing down pending tasks will help you feel better about what needs to be done later on and will help you hit the ground running after your break.

columns dealing with the differences from home that I observed throughout Europe and north Africa. More could be said. But now I’m home and it’s time to notice how that feels and looks.

L.A.. is big. Huge. Spread out. Gray. Not so green. I knew all this, but it hits you once you start hitting the freeways again. Athens is huge and spread out and most of it not so pretty. To some extent, also Rome. Madrid, Berlin, Naples, Vienna and Salzburg.

But when you get to a city’s core, Eurocities always win. Of course, they have centuries or even millennia head start on any American city, but they treasure it, they preserve and restore it, they don’t rush to tear it down for something new (and more profitable). And even beyond the core, you’ll often see startling (in a good way) public art, in some otherwise nondescript residential area. How many sculptures or fountains have you counted lately in Culver City, Wilmington or even Mt. Washington or Silverlake?

Billboards. I’ve always hated billboards.

How dare we be constantly subjected to ugly huge advertising thrust into our faces, polluting our vision of the blue skies (when we have them), the mountains, the beautiful coastline? Just for the profit of a few. You think the free market can’t operate without pervasive advertising? They seem to manage throughout Europe, where we rarely saw a billboard. On the highways, businesses get maybe one official small brown rectangular sign, the size of your leg. And guess what? If you’re looking for something like that, you want a restaurant, you see the sign and you pull off where it points. Isn’t that enough?

Driving is crazy here. Argue if you will but I have lots of experience, and I’m here to tell you Americans are, as a group, some of the worst drivers on two continents. Oh, plenty of Europeans are crazier. Italians love to pull into your lane as they pass you with maybe a few inches clearance, and a couple seconds avoidance of the truck coming their way. Germans often have no speed limits, and the cars to test them. Most of the rules of the road are ignored in Morocco. French truck drivers frequently cause you to exclaim the name of your chosen God. Northern Scotland’s “highways” turn into one-lane guessing games. And Greece is a road adventure you have to experience.

But having said all that, when Eurodrivers pull in front of you, they always go faster than you do. You rarely have to hit your brakes. Traffic flows smoothly. L.A. drivers seem to think that once they’ve hit the lane they want they can relax and take their foot off the gas like there’s no one behind them (that they just cut in front of).

Ever see all lanes of traffic creeping because two cars decide 30 or even 50 is a really nice speed? In Europe, if you’re not going faster than everyone around you, better get into the slow lane or you’ll get flashed and honked for being so thoughtless.

Too many traffic signals here, not enough (ha! any!) traffic circles. Plenty of the latter everywhere in Europe, even on highways, very few traffic lights even in cities. As a result, traffic flows there, to a rhythm, and traffic slows and halts here.

It’s rare to see cars pulled over in Europe because of an accident. Credit the flow.

Credit the demanding, expensive process to get licensed (six months, six grand or more). Credit severe penalties for drinking and driving (easy to lose your license for life for one violation). I say credit also a shared agreement on driving. Rarely does anyone drift out of their lane, or run a stop sign or fail to yield, or break other rules.

Why do we?

Cops. As soon as I got back I picked up the fear of the black and white again. Corny as it sounds, cops are rarely seen and not feared by most Europeans. They don’t lie in wait to catch you breaking some traffic law.

Maybe they have better things to do. More traffic cameras there.

As I observed Americans again on their home turf, I thought, what’s different about us? Could I pick out an American now, anywhere? I think, yes. We walk and talk with an air of confidence, a can-do attitude. Sure that tips over sometimes into ugly American-ness, but the flip side of that is a contented assurance that you don’t see in most Europeans. Very hard to explain, but I see it. And it’s good.

We have some new young friends from Holland who are visiting in Chicago for an extended stay, and they say they are having the time of their lives enjoying our food, our culture and even our fast-paced way of life.

And being treated very well by Americans.

Since we were treated so wonderfully all over Europe, that news really makes me feel good about us.

with his name, he would have had to invent it. It serves as a reminder of all the conventions he was trying to break free of in his music, his spirituality and his life.

A Zen Buddhist, his open-mindedness allowed him to consider not just notes, harmonies, melodies, and rhythms but all sounds — traffic, jet noise, alley cats fighting — as music. He sometimes consulted an ancient Chinese divination text to help inform his compositions.

Cage famously composed “4’33,” in which there is silence for 4 minutes and 33 seconds.

The New York Times reviewed it with no words.

But before establishing his mysterious public persona, Cage wrote what Raiford Rogers, artistic director and choreographer of Raiford Rogers Modern Ballet, calls “these beautiful little piano pieces.”

“I took master classes in the 1970s with Merce Cunningham and got to know (his life partner) composer John Cage,” Rogers wrote. “Before and sometimes after the classes Cage would sit and play the beautiful ‘Bach Preludes.’ He referred to it as church music, and anyone who’s been to a church in their life would have heard this music.”

Cage’s seminal piece “In a Landscape” was written in 1948. “It’s a beautiful but unstructured atmospheric trance-like piano piece, very important in the music world,” Rogers explained. Cage usually resisted stating his influences. “He didn’t like to talk about it but he told me yes, Bach was an inspiration” for the piano works.

Rogers pairs Cage’s “In a Landscape” back to back with those “Bach Preludes” in a new ballet “Preludes in a Landscape” premiering on July 14.

For more than two decades, Rogers created ballets from his rent-controlled Santa Monica apartment. “I just counted up 50 ballets in about 30 years of choreographing,” he said. “I’m blessed because I’ve been able to get support from corporations and foundations and maintain my own voice as a choreographer.”

By age 10, Rogers was a professional musician and actor. A native of Bad Axe, Mich., he went to high school in Lansing, Mich. where young men did not grow up to be dancers. “I told friends and family I was studying theatre. Like Billy Elliot, I was hiding my ballet slippers. But it dawned on me

that dance was the combination of theatre, music and movement, it had everything.” He also assisted the choreographers, gaining him the apprenticeship that would take him off in his own artistic direction.

From Amsterdam School of the Arts, he went for his college degree (a promise to his father) at University of the Americas, working with Constanza Hool, co-founder of Ballet Folklorico de Mexico. “She was a famous choreographer and had one of the longest running TV shows in Mexico. I was living a great life there, dancing, assisting her, and getting a lot of really bad ballets out of my system.”

At University of New Mexico, he danced with Albuquerque Dance Theatre and Santa Fe Opera, moving to Los Angeles in the 1970s as part of Gene Marinaccio American Concert Ballet. By the early 1980s, he and co-artistic director Victoria Koenig founded Los Angeles Chamber Ballet.

Among its memorable accomplishments was a collaboration between three choreographers (Rogers, Koenig and Patrick Frantz), artist/set designer Mark Stock and an original live score by contemporary classical group Cartesian Reunion Memorial Orchestra, based on the beloved children’s tale, “The Little Prince,” produced in 1987.

When Koenig moved on to run Inland Pacific Ballet in 1992, Rogers continued working under his own name. He’s a oneman band who choreographs, recruits dancers, rehearses, finds costumes, fundraises, manages the company’s business and sweeps up after performances. The company has performed in New York and London as well as L.A. “Story ballets” like the “Little Prince” are not typical of Rogers. I asked him why he calls his work “modern ballet.”

“I like the technique, the structure the discipline of ballet, but I like the freedom and the lack of rules in modern dance, essentially anything goes. I use modern because it’s a historical term. Few people know that modern dance really started in North Hollywood in 1915 at the Denishawn school, where Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, Jose Limon, Doris Humphrey got their start. I count them among my biggest influences.”

‘Our House’ is not a home WHEN YOU GO TO SEE A PLAY BY THERESA

Rebeck you can generally be assured that it will be a thoroughly enjoyable evening of theater.

But not this time.

“Our House,” currently having its West Coast premiere at the Lounge Theatre in Hollywood, is an over-the-top dramedy about the dumbing-down of the news, reality TV, the obsession with ratings and the bottom line, and a quartet of 20-somethings who squabble like 12-year-olds.

Merv (Kyle Ingleman) is the protagonist (or more precisely, the antagonist) among the four housemates. He is a sloth, flopping on the couch and watching reality TV 24/7.

He’s three months behind in his share of the rent, won’t get off his butt to help around the house, and eats everybody else’s food.

Which really aggravates Alice (Rachel Germaine), Grigsby (Jennifer Kenyon), and Vince (JB Waterman).

Meanwhile, Wes (Mark Belnick), the head of the TV network, fulminates about having to broadcast news when he could be broadcasting even more reality TV. He finds a partial solution by giving his inamorata Jennifer (Ajerae Coleman), the “face of the morning news,” her own reality show. The show, called “Our House,” is a recognizable clone of the dreadful CBS show Big Brother.

Julie Chen should sue.

Wes, in a series of scathing monologues, reduces TV to the numbers — listeners and profits. “Staying informed is optional,” he says. “TV makes us real. TV is hyper-reality.”

Despite the protestations of Stu (Patrick Hancock), the head of the news department — “The human race is more important than the numbers,” he argues — Wes would like to cancel the news altogether.

Or, better yet, have Jennifer present it in the nude.

About his process Rogers says, “Beethoven used to play Bach and he’d say, just play the notes. If you’re reading a book and the story is good, you don’t notice the pages. Architects say if you’re in a great building you don’t notice the shape of the windows, you notice space and light in it.

I’m trying to get to this in my dances, too. I tell dancers that I essentially don’t care about the steps. I don’t want the music to be interpreted, I want them to embody it. I hate when I watch a show about dancers and they’re told, ‘Let me see your pain,’ I call that angst in the pants. I want to see what’s really

Unfortunately, the Lounge Theatre’s stage is a very small space, and set designer Dan Mailley has had to squeeze two disparate sets into it. Most of it is comprised of the apartment of the four housemates. Then downstage left is the area where Wes delivers his rambunctious diatribes and at the rear is the broadcast area where Jennifer delivers the news and the latest updates on the reality TV show.

Ironically, I kept anticipating that the four housemates would turn out to be the actual participants of the TV show, much like the clever 1998 movie “The Truman Show,” in which Jim Carrey was living his life on TV without being aware of it. But that isn’t what Rebeck had in mind.

And so it was left to lighting designer Matt Richter to differentiate the activity by his dramatic lighting effects, so you could tell who was doing what where.

In the end the two halves of the play converge in a surprising (and rather silly) twist.

No spoiler alert here.

To give credit where it’s due, Rebeck is a master of amusing dialogue and interesting plot lines, as in her TV hit “Smash” and her scripts for such recent L.A. theater favorites as “The Water’s Edge” and “Poor Behavior.”

“Our House,” however, is not one of her best, even though it has the benefit of good direction by Kiff Scholl and first-class performances by everyone — most especially by Germaine as the overwrought Alice.

CONCERT FROM PAGE 3 casual, in-the-moment vibe is not uncommon to the wave-rider Frankenreiter, who embraces all things surf-related.

“For surfers things happen really quickly, in a split second,” he said. “You can try to find the perfect swell, but you can’t expect everything to be perfect.”

It’s the slight imperfections that give the new album its textural playfulness.

“This is one of the most organic and original productions I’ve worked on. It’s not like any of my other albums. The last album I put out was very polished. This one is a little different because of the instruments we used and those we didn’t,” said Frankenreiter.

Essential to the record’s feel is Frankenreiter’s inspired use of instrumentation.

“We skipped the basics and went for a whole lot of different instruments,” he said.

“We never brought in a drum set — instead there’s handclapping for percussion, or the two of us banging on pots and pans. We were using everything from bells to singing bowls to Zippo lighters; at one point we put some beans and salts in a can and shook it around.”

Grundy played a key role in the wildly varied sounds on “Start Livin’,” Frankenreiter said.

“Matt was playing ukulele and lap steel guitar and banjo — he’d grab an instrument and we’d do a take live and just build the track up from that,” Frankenreiter said. “It was a real fun vibe.”

Frankenreiter. He didn’t expect to be a professional surfer and he didn’t pick up a guitar until he was 16, so his success and fame still surprise him.

“I fell in love with surfing,” he said.“I fell in love with the essence of riding, of going down the line on the wave and how incredible that felt. For me it was like, what do I need to do to make sure I can [surf] the rest of my life? I never set out to be a professional surfer but that’s what happened and it was a dream come true, and I’m still living that dream. And with music as with surfing you never get to a place where you feel like you’ve mastered it all. It’s always changing it’s never the same gig twice.

You never catch the same wave twice.”

The folk-infused songs on “Start Livin’” sweetly reflect the simplicity of the recording. With Frankenreiter’s rich, honey-thick vocals and masterful guitar work, “Start Livin’” bears all the intimacy of an impromptu back-porch performance and the tenderness of a treasured love letter.

Opening for Frankenreiter is the Song and Dance Society featuring Jeff Young and Dannielle DeAndrea — performing soulful, organic and electrifying music. For the Frankenreiter show at the pier Grundy will be playing guitars and they will be bringing in a bass player.

In that same time period, Butler brought in $929,072.31.

The two liberal Democratic women invested heavily in expensive mailers and other campaign materials in an attempt to sway undecided voters.

The effort tapped Osborn’s reserves, leaving her $28,708 in debt, according to an email she sent to supporters.

The debt is not reflected in Osborn’s most recent campaign filing statement, although it should be covered in the statements due July 31, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.

Osborn pushed forward with the extra spending on the premise that she would make it to the second round of voting,

according to the e-mail.

“I deferred some costs of our campaign into the general election because I had no doubt we’d be there,” Osborn wrote to her supporters. “But because we’re not, it means I am now responsible for $28,708. This is the hardest money to ask for, because it’s personal. I cannot afford to absorb this loss, and I need to ask for your support again.”

It’s not exactly abnormal for candidates to walk away from campaigns with debts left to pay.

In the quest for the Republican presidential nomination, former candidate Newt Gingrich piled up $4.7 million in debts and obligations in his flashy run for the White House, according to a June report filed with the Federal Elections Commission.

Tibetan monks tackling science in the Indian hills TIM SULLIVAN Associated Press

SARAH, India The shouts of more than a dozen Tibetan monks echo through the small classroom. Fingers are pointed. Voices collide. When an important point is made, the men smack their hands together and stomp the floor, their robes billowing around them.

It’s the way Tibetan Buddhist scholars have traded ideas for centuries. Among them, the debate-as-shouting match is a discipline and a joy.

But this is something different.

Evolutionary theory is mentioned — loudly. One monk invokes Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle. Another shouts about the subatomic nature of neutrinos.

In an educational complex perched on the edge of a small river valley, in a place where the Himalayan foothills descend into the Indian plains, a group of about 65 Tibetan monks and nuns are working with American scientists to tie their ancient culture to the modern world.

“I’d like to go back to my monastery ... to pass on my knowledge to other monks so that they might bring the (scientific) process to others,” said Tenzin Choegyal, a 29-yearold monk born in exile in India.

If that seems a modest goal, it reflects an immense change in Tibetan culture, where change has traditionally come at a glacial pace.

Isolated for centuries atop the high Himalayan plateau, and refusing entry to nearly all outsiders, Tibet long saw little of value in modernity.

Education was almost completely limited to monastic schools. Magic and mysticism were — and are — important parts of life to many people. New technologies were something to be feared: Eyeglasses were largely forbidden until well into the twentieth centuries.

No longer. Pushed by the Dalai Lama, a fierce proponent of modern schooling, a series of programs were created in exile to teach scientific education to monks, the traditional core of Tibetan culture.

At the forefront is an intensive summer program, stretched over five years, that brings professors from Emory University in Atlanta. For six days a week, six hours a day, the professors teach everything from basic math to advanced neuroscience.

“The Buddhist religion has a deep concept of the mind that goes back thousands of years,” said Larry Young, an Emory psychiatry professor and prominent neuroscientist.

“Now they’re learning something different about the mind: the mind-body interface, how the brain controls the body.”

But why are Tibetans now embracing modernity?

Many of the roots can be traced to 1959, when Chinese soldiers invaded Tibet amid an aborted uprising. The Dalai Lama and thousands of his followers fled across the Himalayas and into India, creating an exile community that now numbers an estimated 150,000 people around the world.

Beijing says Tibet is an integral part of China. And while the Dalai Lama insists he only wants autonomy for his homeland, Beijing disparages him as a quasi-terrorist intent on wresting control away from China.

The Tibetan culture, meanwhile, is increasingly imperiled. Ethnic Han Chinese, encouraged by generous government subsidies, now outnumber Tibetans in much of Tibet. The traditional Tibetan herding cul-

ture is dying out as people move to cities.

Many young Tibetans now speak a tangle of Chinese and Tibetan.

The shifting cultural landscape has torn at Tibet, sparking violent uprisings every decade or so. In the most recent wave, some three dozen people have burned themselves alive over the past year in ethnic Tibetan areas of China, protesting Beijing’s policies.

Amid such tumult, the Dalai Lama — a man raised to live in regal isolation as a neardeity — has instead spent much of his life seeking ways that Tibetans can hold onto their traditions even as they find their way in the modern world.

He has encouraged modern schooling for exile children, and a democratic system to choose the Tibetan political leader (he renounced his political powers in 2011).

There are job programs for the armies of unemployed young people.

And, for a few dozen monks and nuns, there is science.

The first group from the Emory program — 26 monks and two nuns — have just finished their five years of summer classes.

While they earned no degrees, they are expected to help introduce a science curriculum into the monastic academies, and will take with them Tibetan-language science textbooks the program has developed.

The Dalai Lama realizes that “preservation of the culture will occur through change,” said Carol Worthman, a professor of anthropology in Emory’s Laboratory for Comparative Human Biology. “You have to change to stay in place.”

But change is a complicated thing.

Particularly with a culture like this one.

The monks and nuns in the Emory program are “the best and the brightest,” Worthman said, brought to the Sarah complex from monasteries and convents across India and Nepal. While most are in their 20s or 30s, some are far older and long ago earned high-level degrees in Buddhist philosophy.

Still, few learned anything but basic math before the Emory program. Because of the way they study — focusing on debates and the memorization of long written passages, but doing comparatively little writing — few are able to take notes during classroom lectures. Many were raised to see magic as an integral part of the world around them.

To watch them in class, though, is astonishing.

No one yawns. No one dozes. Since almost no one takes notes, it’s easy to think they’re not paying attention.

But then a monk or a nun in a red robe calls out a question about brain chemistry — or cell biology, or logic — that can leave their teachers stunned.

Though most studied only religious subjects after eighth grade, they regularly traverse highly complex concepts: “They really understand how neurocircuits work at a level that’s comparable to what we see at a senior (undergraduate) neuroscience classroom in the United States,” said Young, the neuroscientist.

For most of the monastics, though, the challenges are not in the academic rigor.

They see nothing astonishing about their ability to process vast amounts of information without taking notes, or to remain attentive for hours on end. It is how they have been trained.

For them, the challenges lie in weaving modern science with traditional beliefs.

The science program “was sort of like a culture shock for me,” said Choegyal.

ave you ever applied for a job, professional license, and/or school application where they asked if you have ever been convicted of a crime? If so, did you get nervous and distraught at the thought of having to circle “yes” and then explaining the circumstances of what happened years and years ago with your minor run in with the law? If this is a likely scenario for you or someone you know, help make those skeletons in the closet disappear by filing an expungement/dismissal motion. California Penal Code Sections 1203.3 and 1203.4 set forth the basic rules for expungements.This article focuses on some need to know legal rules and consequences with regard to expunging your record in California. Please note that this article examines the basic elements and procedures of expungements. If you or someone you know is filling out an application or reporting a past conviction to anyone in an official capacity it is advisable to speak with a criminal attorney about whether you must report the past conviction, even after the expungement process.

In terms of filing an expungement and clearing up your record, there are a couple preliminary questions that must be answered. First, was your past conviction for a felony or misdemeanor crime? Second, was probation granted and if so have you successfully completed probation? And lastly, once you have determined that you are eligible for expungement, what do you do?

If the answer to the first question is a misdemeanor, then you’re on the right path! If the answer to the first question is felony, then there is another step that must be completed prior to filing an expungement. In order to expunge a felony conviction or have it dismissed from your record, a motion must be made pursuant to Penal Code Section 17(b) to first have the conviction reduced to a misdemeanor. Certain felony crimes, however, are never capable of being reduced to a misdemeanor and can never be expunged.

Convictions that cannot be expunged or dismissed by law include any misdemeanor listed in Vehicle Code section 42001(b), any violation of P.C. 286(c), 288, 288a(c), 288.5, or 289(j), a felony under P.C. 261.5(d), and any infraction. Moreover, if you were never granted probation and instead went to State Prison, although there are options for clearing your record, the basics of expungements as explained in this article will not apply to your given scenario.

Once you have determined that your past conviction was a misdemeanor or capable of being reduced to a misdemeanor, move on to question number two:Was probation granted and have you successfully completed all the terms and orders of your probation?

Typically, in misdemeanor cases, courts order that a defendant be placed on 1-3

years of probation and to follow all rules and regulations. If the court does not order probation, you’re ready to file the motion! If probation was granted, the time period is over and done with, and you have fulfilled all the terms of the probation (including completing any classes, service work, and/or paid all fines) then you are also ready to file the motion! If probation is still open and has not been completed, a separate motion for early termination of probation must first be filed. If granted, and probation terminated early, then you are ready to file the motion! In sum, before a motion for expungement/dismissal is filed, probation must typically be successfully completed either by the passage of time or by early termination from the court.

Now that the motion is ready for filing, what do you do and how do you do it? California courts vary in terms of requirements for expungement/dismissal motions. For instance, some courts require a filing fee (usually around $60) and attached declaration (preferably by an attorney).All courts, however, require that a P.C. 1203.4/1203.4(a) Petition For Dismissal be completed and filed. In order to fill out this form correctly, a petitioner needs to obtain the case number, date of conviction, conviction charges, date of birth, driver’s license number, last four digits of social security, and if possible the Criminal Identification and Information (CII) number.After entering the requisite information simply check the applicable boxes and sign/date the form.Additionally, along with the Petition, you should also attach a Court Order.The same information must be filled out on the Court Order; however, this form is for the judge to review and then sign/date.The signed Court Order is then stamped and recorded by the clerk certifying that a judge has ordered the case dismissed/expunged.

Expungement/Dismissal Petitions typically take anywhere from one to three months for the court to review and complete.
