Council agrees to drop taxi rates to LAX BY ASHLEY ARCHIBALD Daily Press Staff Writer

CITY HALL Alert: Beginning Friday, if you pay more than $35 for a taxi ride from anywhere in Santa Monica to LAX, you’ve paid

too much. The City Council voted Tuesday to drop the rates from locations south and north of Interstate 10 respectively as part of a package of motions revisiting different aspects of the citywide taxi franchise system.

Rates will now be a maximum of $35 if you’re hopping in north of the 10 Freeway, and $30 if you get in on the southern side. The drop in price from what was recommended by a study commissioned in 2008 from the Nelson/Nygaard firm is just sim-

ple math. “It’s really just an average rate of a bill,” said Don Patterson, business and revenue operations manager for City Hall. SEE RATES PAGE 7

The door to unit 303 remains sealed with police tape as FBI agents continue to pick the place apart, but a line of would-be renters is already jostling to get a look at the apartment once occupied by America’s most wanted criminal. Mark Verge, owner of Westside Rentals, said his Santa Monica office had been inun-

DOWNTOWN When Giuseppe “Joe” Vitale opened Joe’s Pizza of Bleecker in Santa Monica, he claimed that he was bringing the

venerable New York City pizzeria by the same name to the West Coast. He told the Daily Press in 2007 that he co-founded the now famous Greenwich Village eatery with his then father-in-law Pino “Joe” Pozzuoli, the duo serving their
