■ Robert E. Mays, 64, an associate dean at the University of Southern Illinois, agreed to plead guilty in June to biting a man on the leg when he had stopped to help Mays after a March traffic accident. ■ Louisville, Ky., middle school teacher Caroline Kolb was fired in March after a January incident in which she bit a 14-year-old student on the back as punishment. ■ Janet W. Strong, 53, was charged by police in April with biting a toddler at her Loving Touch Child Care center in Milton, Fla. ■ An assistant to boxer Mike Tyson revealed in March that he had settled his lawsuit stemming from a May 2003 incident in which he had accused Tyson, who was angry about a road-rage incident, of punching him and then biting him on the leg.

SM PIER — Summertime in Santa Monica means free live music every Thursday, beginning tonight with Latin rock and jazz. The 22nd annual Twilight Dance Series on the Santa Monica Pier starts today at 7:30 p.m. with Latin rock and jazz master Poncho Sanchez. Backed by his band, Sanchez will rock the crowd on his congas.

SM COURTHOUSE — Finding a dozen people devoid of opinion about Michael Jackson proved a challenge on Wednesday, as jury selection got underway here for a $3.8 million lawsuit brought against the pop singer by a former business associate. But then, seldom are things business-as-usual when they involve the embattled entertainer. “What we will be showing you is a world unfamiliar to most,” warned Superior Court Judge Jacqueline Connor, addressing the pool of 60 potential jurors crammed into the Santa Monica courtroom. What the selected jurors will not see is the performer in person, as Jackson is scheduled to appear solely through videotaped depositions he completed in England. According to his attorney, Thomas C. Mundell, “(Jackson) lives in Bahrain, which is 10 time zones away.” Jackson’s presence still promises to loom large throughout the trial. F. Marc Schaffel is suing Jackson for breach of contract, claiming he is owed money for helping produce television shows that were aimed at rebutting the star’s negative portrayal in the infamous documentary
