Bulger’s longtime lover gets eight years DENISE LAVOIE AP Legal Affairs Writer

cultural activities at the 3,000-seat Greek Theatre. In a letter dated May 22, Mark Hill, a program budget manager with the Department of Finance, informed City Hall that the joint-use project and three other, smaller obligations did not meet state requirements for funding. That invalidated two $4,065,000 payments from the former Redevelopment Agency to the school district based on a contract between the agency and the school district dated June 28, 2011.

BOSTON The longtime girlfriend of mobster James “Whitey” Bulger was sentenced Tuesday to eight years in prison for helping one of the FBI’s most-wanted men stay on the run for 16 years, a life her lawyer said she doesn’t regret because she still loves Bulger. Catherine Greig showed no emotion when U.S. District Judge Douglas Woodlock handed down the sentence after listening to emotional pleas from relatives of those Bulger is accused of killing. Bulger, the 82year-old former leader of the notorious Winter Hill Gang, is awaiting trial on charges he participated in 19 murders. Greig, 61, had pleaded guilty in March to charges of conspiracy to harbor a fugitive, identity fraud and conspiracy to commit identity fraud. Greig’s lawyer, Kevin Reddington, urged the judge to impose a sentence of a little over two years, arguing that Greig was in love with Bulger when she fled Boston with him in 1995. “Catherine Greig fell in love with Mr. Bulger, and that’s why she was in the situation she was in,” Reddington said. “Miss Greig did not believe that Mr. Bulger was capable of these homicides.” But prosecutors dismissed her professions of love and said Greig had numerous opportunities to leave Bulger during their time on the run. “This was not a romantic saga,” U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz said. “She helped and protected and concealed a fugitive.” Family members of those Bulger is accused of killing lashed out at Greig during victim impact statements, with one relative using an expletive to describe her. Another relative made a derogatory reference to her brother’s suicide, prompting Greig to cover her mouth and fight back tears.

State denies $57M in Samohi improvements City Hall, school district struggle to change minds BY ASHLEY ARCHIBALD Daily Press Staff Writer

CITY HALL The state’s Department of Finance has taken aim at $57 million of former Redevelopment Agency funds slated for improvements at Santa Monica High School, putting the future of that major public investment at risk. The trouble stems from payments made by the former Redevelopment Agency that City Hall and an independent oversight board believe are valid under legislation passed in 2011 that killed redevelopment agencies throughout the state.

State officials claim that contracts that City Hall submitted relating to the Samohi improvements, called the Civic Center Joint Use Project, were signed one day after the June 27, 2011 cut off, invalidating the agreements. That would be bad news for both City Hall and the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District, which have already spent more than $2 million replacing the old football field at Samohi with a new synthetic turf and have contracts for more work connected to the project. The first phase also involves replacing an aging gym and expanding opportunities for
