Gambling boats off the coast in history

THE HISTORY BOOKS It was a rough month for Santa Monica journalists a century ago.

There was the woman knocked out by an

assailant on the rails. She came to right as the train approached. There was the order by the Police Commission that all “tangoing, ragging, and fancy dancing stopped from this day on.” There was the hiring of the city’s first health inspector at $100 a month.

But on the whole, June 1914 was a quiet in

Santa Monica.

75 YEARS AGO

Turn the clock forward a quarter-century to June 1939 — the year “The Big Sleep” was written by Raymond Chandler, whose seedy Bay City is a pseudonym for Santa Monica.

Car wrecks were rampant, killing several Santa Monicans during that month. There were a couple grisly murders; a son killed his mother with a hammer. Water was on the mind of public officials.

Israel no longer a cause that unifies U.S. Jews RACHEL ZOLL AP Religion Writer

NEW YORK Once a unifying cause for generations of American Jews, Israel is now bitterly dividing Jewish communities.

Jewish organizations are withdrawing invitations to Jewish speakers or performers considered too critical of Israel, in what opponents have denounced as an ideological litmus test meant to squelch debate.

Some Jewish activists have formed watchdog groups, such as Citizens Opposed to Propaganda Masquerading as Art, or COPMA, and JCC Watch, to monitor programming for perceived anti-Israel bias.

They argue Jewish groups that take donations for strengthening the community shouldn’t be giving a platform to Israel’s critics.

American campuses have become ideological battle zones over Israeli policy in the Palestinian territories, with national Jewish groups sometimes caught up on opposing sides of the internal debate among Jewish students. The “Open Hillel” movement of Jewish students is challenging speaker guidelines developed by Hillel, the major Jewish campus group, which bars speakers who “delegitimize” or “demonize” Israel.

Open Hillel is planning its first national conference in October.

And in a vote testing the parameters of Jewish debate over Israel, the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations, a

national coalition that for decades has represented the American Jewish community, denied membership in April to J Street, the 6-year-old lobby group that describes itself as pro-Israel and pro-peace and has sometimes criticized the Israeli government.

Opponents of J Street have been showing a documentary called “The J Street Challenge,” in synagogues and at Jewish gatherings around the country, characterizing the group as a threat from within.

“I believe this has reached a level of absurdity now,” said Rabbi Sharon Brous, founder of the IKAR-LA Jewish community in California, which is considered a national model for reinvigorating religious life. “Even where people are acting from a place of love and deep commitment that Israel remains a vital and vibrant state, they are considered outside the realm. It’s seen as incredibly threatening and not aligned with the script the American Jewish community expects.”

In 2012, when Israel carried out an offensive in Gaza after an upsurge in rocket fire, Brous wrote an email to IKAR members that was published in The Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles. She supported Israel’s right to defend itself, while also urging recognition of Palestinian suffering.

The result? She was overwhelmed with hate mail, and inspired competing op-eds and letters in the Journal from Jewish clergy and others until a prominent rabbi

called for an end to the recriminations and name-calling.

American Jews have always vigorously debated Israeli policy, but mostly within the community and with an understanding that differences would be set aside if the Jewish state faced an existential threat. But the discussion within the U.S. has become more reflective of the very broad debate within Israel.

“It’s a very old issue that many countries face and now Israel faces: to what extent should domestic debate carry over when you’re abroad?” said Jonathan Sarna, a Brandeis University scholar of American Jewish history. “The critics of J Street and the like say, ‘Of course, it’s fine in Israel because the minute they call up the reserves, all politics disappear. Moreover, they have to live with the results of their decision.’ Their argument is that there should be a great difference between what you can do and say in Israel and what you can do or say in America. There are all sorts of enemies who make use of the words in America differently than they do in Israel.”

‘Fault’ tops Tom Cruise at box office with $48.2M JAKE COYLE AP Film Writer

NEW YORK In a box-office battle that pitted young against old, female against male, modest drama against big-budget spectacle, the teenage romance “The Fault in Our Stars” easily bested the time-shifting Tom Cruise action film “Edge of Tomorrow.”

With a $48.2 million domestic debut, “The Fault in Our Stars” thumped the $29.1 million opening for “Edge of Tomorrow,” according to studio estimates Sunday. It did so with a far less seasoned star in Shailene Woodley and a $12 million budget a fraction the size of that for “Edge of Tomorrow,” made for approximately $175 million.

The results offered a stark illustration of shifting box-office trends. Whereas bigbudget, male-oriented action films with stars like Cruise have long ruled the day at North American multiplexes, those movies are increasingly under siege from films ignited by passionate young female moviegoers.

“The notion of what is traditional summer fare is changing,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak. “Women and young girls SEE MOVIES PAGE 9

Fan of the ponies Editor:

I am a 10-year resident of Santa Monica who occasionally goes to the Sunday Farmers’ Market, and when I do, I fork over 6 bucks so my 3-year-old daughter can ride a pony named Blondie (“Pony ride operator lacking some permits,” May 6).

The ponies do not “plod all day,” as Jennifer O’Connor wrote (“Pony rides aren’t cool,” Letter to the Editor, May 8). They plod between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. — 3 1/2 hours.

O’Connor also wrote that children may hit, kick, or pull the ponies’ manes and tails. They “may” at other pony-ride venues, however the owner of these particular ponies puts on and takes off each child, children never make skin to coat contact with the ponies, and children who cry or lean to one side are unstrapped and handed back to their parents.

I have seen employees feed and water the animals, as well as sweep up after them. Children do not hold halters, so no ponies are leaving the market “sore and chafed from their halters being tugged all day.”

Yes, pony owner Tawni Angel should have an active business license and an animal permit. And I would happily sign her petition defending pony rides.

Save the mural Editor:

Thank you to Charles Andrew for speaking out on behalf of our environment (“Careful with that ax, Eugene,” Curious City, June 4).

More specifically, calling attention to the effort to save Jane Golden’s “Muir Woods” mural. There are too few iconic images that remind us of how important it is to honor and respect the natural world. It should be restored to its glory and what it depicts should always be appreciated and protected.

New stops don’t work Editor:

I could not agree more with letter writer Andrew Goldstein: those new bus stop “amenities” are clearly designed to discourage the homeless from lingering at a bus stop (“Not a good look for BBB,” Letter to the Editor, June 6). And the “shelter” thing is a total joke.

It’s obvious that whoever designed these new stops does not depend on public transportation. And I see that bus schedules are no longer available at bus stops; one must have a smart phone to see a schedule now.

Did they “focus group” this thing before implementing it? I doubt it. What a waste of public money.

Backing the airport Editor:

David Putnam writes ”Santa Monica should be able to control the uses of the airport for the good of the city.” (“No more jets,” Letter to the Editor, June 5.)

The airport is not just for the good of the city. It is part of the nationwide transportation network.

Should Santa Monica also have the right to tear up portions of the I-10 and PCH that run through the city, and convert them to parks or residential use?

This attack on the airport is Nimbyism at its most obvious.

Big battles coming in November election THERE WERE SOME PRIZES AND SUR-

prises resulting from last Tuesday’s primary.

The big race was for Los Angeles County Supervisor, Third District. Zev Yaroslavsky has been termed out. Eight candidates lined up to replace him. The two front-runners were Sheila Kuehl and Bobby Shriver.

With approximately 13 percent of the electorate voting (20 percent in Santa Monica), Kuehl received 36 percent of the vote and Shriver pulled in 28.8 percent.

In the days leading to the primary, I had criticized Kuehl for repeatedly lying to Santa Monica voters about failed 2008 ballot Measure T that would have temporarily capped new commercial development in the city.

Kuehl was featured on a number of antiT mailers. It “encourages landlords to demolish affordable apartments and displace renters” and it will put seniors and working families at risk and jeopardize our already diminishing supply of affordable housing, she claimed.

Measure T addressed only commercial development and had nothing to do with renters.

It provided no incentives for landlords to demolish apartments.

Last week, Kuehl was up to her old tricks, again. It seems the 72-year-old, former State Senator/State Assemblywoman just can’t help herself. This time it was two flyers mailed to voters immediately before the primary. “What does the Los Angeles Times say about Sheila Kuehl and Bobby Shriver?” one of the mailers asked.

Kuehl’s mailers highlighted quotes from a May 15 Los Angeles Times editorial that actually endorsed their competitor John Duran. Kuehl’s glossy mailer highlighted statements from the Times editorial that were favorable to Kuehl along with comments less favorable to Shriver. Duran wasn’t even mentioned in her mailers.

This so irked a member of the L.A. Times editorial board, that he wrote a scathing response (published May 30) to Kuehl’s latest foray into campaign fiction. He called it “misleading” and gave the impression the Times endorsed Kuehl.

You can bet your Prius that there’ll be a lot more dirty tricks, misleading mailers and outright fabrications coming from the Kuehl camp between now and Nov. 4, especially with master trickster Parke Skelton running her campaign.

Another closely watched race was for the 33rd Congressional District. 17 candidates ran. Leading the pre-primary pack were State Senator Ted Lieu, businesswoman Wendy Gruel, new-age author Marianne Williamson and public radio host Matt Miller.

When the votes were counted, Republican and criminal gang prosecutor Elan Carr was the top vote-getter with 21.49 percent. Lieu came in second with 19.05 percent. Gruel placed third with 16.77 percent which doesn’t bode well for her future runs for office.

Carr has his work cut out for him because the sprawling 33rd is heavily Democratic and Lieu has been endorsed by the retiring Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Santa Monica). It seems that Carr benefited in the primary from the Democratic vote being split between 10 candidates.

The other race that attracted a lot of local interest was for Lieu’s 26th District State Senate seat. Eight candidates were in the race. Front-runners included Santa MonicaMalibu Unified School District Board of Education member Ben Allen, social justice attorney Sandra Fluke and former Assembly member Betsy Butler, who ran unsuccessfully for reelection against Richard Bloom for Assembly in 2012.

When the dust cleared, Allen was “numero uno” with 21.82 percent of the vote. Fluke came in second with 19.7 percent. She gained national fame two years ago when wacky, conservative radio, talk show host, Rush Limbaugh called her a “slut” because she advocated that health insurance cover birth control at a Washington, DC political meeting.

Attorney and Independent Seth Stodder, the only non-Democrat in the race, placed third with 17.47 percent. Butler finished fourth with 16.67 percent of the vote.

Speaking of dirty tricks, Butler was the subject of negative mailers paid for by pro-medical independent expenditure organizations.

These were the same medical interests that supported surgeon Vito Imbasciani who came in sixth proving that sometimes karma comes back to bite you.

In the race for 50th District of the State Assembly, former Santa Monica Councilman Richard Bloom is seeking reelection. He’ll face environmental attorney Bradley Torgan in the general election.

Bloom and Torgan were the only candidates in the primary.

Although a Republican, Torgan has already caught my attention. He has fought overdevelopment in Hollywood and recently won a court battle to block the city of Los Angeles’ development-heavy Hollywood Community Plan update.

Pro-development Bloom recently sent an official Assembly letter to City Council expressing his disappointment with their decision to rescind the development agreement for the proposed 770,000-square-foot Hines Bergamot Transit Village that almost everyone (except Bloom) feels is just way too big, too traffic-generating and too ugly.

COUNCIL TO REVIEW BIG DEVELOPMENT

There’s a couple of interesting things on the agenda for tomorrow night’s City Council meeting. One item is a review of the proposal for a massive, 12-floor (148 feet), mixed-use development on city-owned property bounded by Fourth and Fifth streets and Arizona Avenue — where the winter ice rink sets up.

The proposal exceeds the 84-foot height limit (and the current 76-foot zoning code height limit) that most residents would like to see as a maximum height for new projects Downtown. It’s totally out of scale with the Downtown and will likely alienate most residents even more. Residocracy.org anyone?

The other item is the second reading of an ordinance to reduce speed limits on many of Santa Monica’s major commercial streets. Of course, this will add to the city’s traffic problems, but since when does anyone in City Hall care about reducing traffic congestion?

And with Google’s recent unveiling of its latest prototype-complete with no pedals or steering wheel-the future is indeed closer than we ever imagined.

Proponents argue that driverless cars-also called “autonomous cars”-are inherently more sustainable than their manned counterparts. For one, they say, once they are widely available many of us will forego owning our own cars in favor of car-sharing, whereby the autonomous vehicle comes to you, charged and ready to go, as needed.

Thus the result could be far fewer cars on the road than today. According to Steve Gutmann of the Seattle-based sustainability think tank Sightline Institute, such a carsharing scenario would also obviate the need for many parking spaces. Today the typical private car spends upwards of 90 percent of its time parked. Once we have more driverless cars, we’ll need far fewer parking spaces, leading to less land being paved and reducing storm water runoff and heat island effects accordingly.

The networked brains of these vehicles will also reduce inefficient routes and decrease overall driving time, leading to better air quality and lower carbon emissions.

Also, the increased safety of driverless vehicles-they obey speed limits, can sense people, bikes and other cars coming toward them, and accelerate and brake much more gradually than human drivers-will mean that the cars can be lighter and require far fewer resources in manufacturing, reducing their overall environmental impact even further.

On the flip side, the advent of driverless cars means that many of us now not able to drive because of age or physical handicaps will be able to use these cars to get around, potentially leading to an increase in the number of cars on the road. And Chandra Bhat of the Center for Transportation Research at the University of Texas points out that just because a car is driverless doesn’t mean we’ll want it to be smaller, lighter and more fuel efficient. He fears that driverless cars will engender a return to larger vehicles because people will want “more comfortable space” when they are free to stretch out, relax, read, videochat, text or even nap during their trips. He adds that driverless cars could lead to more urban sprawl as car commuting becomes more tolerable without the hassle of actually driving.

Bhat also wonders what will become of the public transit systems we’ve invested so heavily in if driverless cars offer the same advantages-using the time en route to do whatever one pleases-with the added benefit of privacy and route/timing flexibility.

Today four U.S. states-Nevada, Florida, California and Michigan-allow driverless cars on their public roads for the purpose of testing; several other states are considering similar allowances. Likewise, in 2013 the United Kingdom began allowing the testing of driverless cars on its public roadways.

Besides Google, several leading automakers and other companies have developed their own prototypes. Car enthusiasts can expect to see such examples from the likes of Mercedes-Benz, General Motors, Nissan, Toyota, Audi, Volvo, Tesla and others at auto shows over the next few years, and can look forward to getting “behind the wheel” of one within a decade. Whatever happens, it certainly is going to be quite a ride.

The clashes among American Jews are partly colored by the sharp tone of overall left-right debate within the U.S. Earlier this year, the Brandeis chapter of J Street and one of its most vocal antagonists on campus, Daniel Mael, accused each other of harassment and made complaints to campus police. Mael, a 21-year-old Orthodox Jew, wrote a series of posts for the conservative site truthrevolt.org accusing J Street of bringing “Israel bashers” on campus.

J Street has said its opponents often distort the group’s statements. The liberal lobby created a “Myths & Facts” page on its website challenging the claims.

Many leaders of the older, more-established organizations say the divisions are not as broad or deep as some claim. Defenders of the presidents’ conference argue their 50member association includes liberal organizations with similar views to J Street, and they blame the lobby group for whipping up a backlash to the vote.

The presidents’ conference was formed in the 1950s in response to what was considered a failure of U.S. Jewish leaders during World War II to speak to American policy makers with one voice. Members were expected to keep internal discussion and voting private.

Among the 17 conference members who voted for J Street in April were the AntiDefamation League, the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, and the Conservative and Reform Jewish movements. Twenty-two conference members voted no and three others abstained. The remaining member groups did not send a representative to vote.

Farley Weiss, president of the National Council of Young Israel, an association for Orthodox synagogues, dismissed J Street’s members as students with a skewed understanding of Mideast history because of the “one-sided, left view” on U.S. college campuses. Weiss was among the few members of the Conference of Presidents who campaigned publicly to block J Street’s admission to the group.

“Their views are not part of what I consider the mainstream of the Jewish community,” Weiss said.

“I wouldn’t characterize them as enemies of Israel,” Weiss said. “I would characterize it that their self-avowed statement that they are pro-Israel is not accurate.”

The split among U.S. Jews has its roots in the Jewish settlement building in the occupied territories after the 1967 Six Day War, which sparked debate in the U.S. and in Israel over whether the settlements helped or hurt Israeli security.

splintering. The strictly traditional Orthodox population grew, but so did the number of Jews who left organized religious life. Jews were marrying outside the faith at a high rate, and their families were generally less involved in the Jewish community and less tied to Israel.

“We now have more people who care deeply about Israel and more people who care very little about Israel,” said Steven M. Cohen, a professor at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute on Religion who specializes in research on the American Jewish community.

Meanwhile, liberal Reform Judaism, which has worked for years to underscore its deep commitment to the Jewish state, grew to become the largest movement in American Judaism. The result: a pro-Israel American Jewish community largely split between conservatives and liberals, both emotionally attached to Israel but with conflicting outlooks on many Israeli policies.

At Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel, a Reform Jewish synagogue in South Orange, New Jersey, Rabbi Daniel Cohen struggles to hold the ever-shrinking common ground among his congregants over Israel. Before Cohen delivers a sermon on the subject, he re-reads what he wrote and asks himself, “How are they going to hear it?”

From the pulpit, he tries to weave together the views of doves and hawks among the 850 families in his congregation, comparing Israel to a flawed friend who nonetheless should be defended against slander. Still, he hears complaints — about his personal involvement with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the long-established lobbying group, and his simultaneous support for congregants active in J Street.

“I’m very, very careful to focus on the importance of Israel and the American Jewish community and being involved in activism. I’m not proscriptive about how people should get involved,” said Cohen, the temple’s senior rabbi for 16 years.

A Pew Research Center survey conducted last year found more than two-thirds of American Jews feel somewhat or very attached to Israel, but only 38 percent believe the Israeli government is sincerely pursuing peace with the Palestinians and 44 percent said settlement construction hurts Israeli national security. (In the same poll, just 12 percent of U.S. Jews said Palestinian leaders were making a sincere effort to resolve the conflict.)

Many Jewish leaders worry the infighting could not only undermine U.S. support for Israel, but also drive away the younger American Jews who are pressing for a broader definition of what it means to be proIsrael.

“The attacks are stronger and more vicious sometimes ...,” said Cohen. “If you’re not hearing other perspectives, I don’t know how you can have an honest, open debate.”

FROM PAGE 1 The biggest news of the day was breaking just off the coast. The California Supreme Court heard arguments about the gambling boats located in the Santa Monica Bay. The issue came down to whether or not the boat in question, the “Rex,” was anchored in a legally described bay or on the high seas, according to the Los Angeles Times archives.

The attorney for the owners of the floating casino told the courts that the Navy, Army, and Marine Corps authorities had testified that the bay was recognized as high sea.

The bay, the state’s attorney claimed referencing several sources, is any water within the a line drawn between Point Dume and Point Vicente, which would have put the “Rex” eight miles within California’s jurisdiction.

Months earlier, owners of the boat had been arrested and found guilty. That case was overturned. The state appealed.

The federal government filed a supporting brief stating: “The United States is not primarily concerned with gambling but we

are anxious about jurisdiction over a festering point for major crimes.”

The court would not make a ruling on the boats until months later but the Los Angeles Chief of Police didn’t wait around.

In late June, he issued an all-points-bulletin to his officers to report all “advertisements of gambling boats” on the piers or marinas.

“It is unlawful,” he noted, according to the Times’ archive, “for any person within this state to solicit, entice, induce, persuade, or procure, or to aid in soliciting any person to visit any gambling ship be within or without the jurisdiction of California.”

Even newspapers advertising gambling boats, the chief said, would be warned before arrests were made.

As a drummer himself, Fernandez said Barbata is well known in the industry and that there are valuable lessons to be learned from industry veterans.

“They are certainly an educational bene-

fit,” he said. “It’s interesting for people but he has written about his life and career as a drummer in the music business and we have a lot of drum students here and they are looking forward to it.”

Barbata said the book included images from his career. He said the book tells some of his best stories from his long career starting from the time he met Albert Einstein at age 3 to meeting the Beatles to his epic performance during a concert power outage.

He said he was playing in a festival at Atlanta when the power suddenly failed.

Barbata said he went into a drum solo as it was all the crowd could hear without speakers. Concert organizers asked him to keep playing while they worked on the power outage to keep the crowd happy.

“So here I am, 45 minutes later, soaking wet, still playing and as soon as I ended it, the lights came on. It was perfect. I got a 5 minute standing ovation and it was literally the night the lights went out in Georgia.”

Barbata said he has continued to write, perform and record music and will be releasing a new album with his wife soon. While he plans to continue in the business, he said this memoir covers his highlights. “This really encompasses most of my life as far as the exciting stuff.”

“The Fault in Our Stars,” a highly-anticipated adaptation of John Green’s best-selling book, was in some ways another example of the power of young-adult fiction. But unlike “Twilight” or “The Hunger Games,” “The Fault in Our Stars” isn’t about sci-fi or fantasy, but is rather a more naturalistic drama about young love and cancer.

Twentieth Century Fox said that an overwhelming 82 percent of the audience for the film was female, an unusually large gender gap for such a popular movie. The majority of the audience eagerly turned out for Thursday night and Friday showings.

“We knew that we had an engaged fan base but we weren’t sure of the depth of it,” said Chris Aronson, Fox’s distribution head.

“We also knew we had formidable competition in the marketplace for similar if not identical demographics.”

That competition — Disney’s fairy tale “Maleficent,” starring Angelina Jolie — slid to second place in its second week with $33.5 million. With a two-week global sum of $335.5 million, “Maleficent” has performed well, but it remains to be seen if it can be a real money-maker for Disney, which spent an estimated $180 million to make it, plus huge amounts to market it.

“Edge of Tomorrow” also showed that such films still have a lot of box-office muscle, it’s only best flexed overseas. The film made $82 million internationally, making most of that in China, Korea and Russia.

Sony’s comedy sequel “22 Jump Street,” starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, kicked off abroad a week ahead of its North American release, earning $8.8 million. Next weekend, it will open alongside DreamWorks’ “How to Train Your Dragon 2.”

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Rentrak. Where available, latest international numbers are also included.

Andrew: We closely considered starting in New York. Many of our investors are in New York. Patrick was there. In the end, however, we figured being a suiting company in LA would be cool. If you are a suiting company in New York, you’re really just runof-the-mill; everyone is out there. Secondly, we believed in the Santa Monica ecosystem.

I’m from LA, Patrick has lived in LA, we both went to college in LA, and we had a lot of friends working at startups out here. We wanted to be involved in this developing community instead of one that has already been established.

Patrick: There are many great companies here that have gone through the life cycle as well as a legitimate number of great engineers, marketing people, and brand people we can tap into.

Andrew: And you’re by the beach.

Erik: What’s one piece of advice you have for aspiring or first-time entrepreneurs?

Andrew: Keep your head down and stay focused on your business. Here in Los Angeles especially, there is a reputation for being networking-heavy - which can add value to your business, but at the end of the day, staying laser focused is most important in my opinion.

Erik: What’s one thing that you would like to say to Santa Monica locals about your company?

Andrew: This summer, we are going to launch a showroom here in Santa Monica where we will allow the bride and groom to try on our suits and tuxes.

Patrick: We also support Chrysalis, a local Santa Monica charity. They are based here and also have an office in downtown Los Angeles where they provide job placement resources for people who may be out of work or have had recent legal trouble.

Outside of donating money, we also provide suits for job interviews. No guy is going to a job interview in a tux.

Erik: That would be pretty funny.

■ The Asia Pacific branch of the worldwide advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather finally apologized in May for a recent "Bounce Back" ad in India for Kurl-On mattresses (whose general theme proclaims mattresses so comfortable that users "bounce" up after landing on them).
