Bloom, Butler leading in the 50th BY ASHLEY ARCHIBALD Daily Press Staff Writer
WESTSIDE Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom and Assemblywoman Betsy Butler (D-53) inched ahead of their competitors to snag the two top spots in an extremely close
contest for the 50th Assembly District Tuesday, according to early results reported by county election officials. Butler took first with 12,519 votes, or 25.9 percent of the ballots. Bloom was only 102 votes behind her. Both are Democrats. Democrat Torie Osborn and Republican
Brad Torgan lagged behind, but only slightly. Osborn captured 24.3 percent of the vote, leaving Torgan with 24.2 percent. Early results show that Bloom won 3,679 votes in Santa Monica, almost 700 more

MALIBU School officials here have warned
Palisades Park path closing for repairs
parents of incoming freshman that their kids may be hazed either this weekend or next as part of an illegal ritual known as “initiation.” A letter signed by Malibu High School Principal Mark Kelly, Assistant Principal Phil Wenker and Middle School Assistant Principal Wendy Wax Gellis was sent to parents on Friday warning them to be on the lookout and to not give in to their kids if they plead to attend the hazing. School officials said they did not know if or where the hazing would take place, but it has happened in prior years at one of the Malibu beaches or at a gated residence. “The eighth graders are often driven to the location by 11th graders,” the letter

PALISADES PARK Joggers who love to exercise here will have to take a slight detour for the next two weeks as city crews complete repair work on the paved path stretching from the Santa Monica Pier entrance north to California Avenue, city officials said. The work is scheduled to begin today, June 7, near the pier entrance. The work will entail the spot repair of damaged asphalt caused by normal wear and tear and overgrown tree roots, said Martin Pastucha, director of Public Works. Once the repair is completed, the asphalt path will receive a rubberized “slurry seal” treatment to preserve the pavement. All work is expected to be completed by June 22. Workers will address 600-foot sections of the path at a time. Other sections of the path will remain open during the repairs. The project is estimated to cost $60,000. City crews will do the patch work while a contractor will do the slurry seal. Slurry seal contains amounts of asphalt binder, polymer and recycled tire rubber, which fills in the surface of the street or path where materials have eroded away overtime, Pastucha said. “This is a recommended preventative maintenance treatment utilized to extend the life of asphalt roadways,” Pastucha said in an e-mail. “The rubberized slurry mixture as compared to traditional slurry results in better looking, longer lasting roadways.” Pastucha was not sure if runners would notice any difference once the job is completed. “Although, it is softer than concrete,” he said.
