Samohi Vikings win first title Softball team routs defending champ North Torrance, 11-3

SMMUSD HDQTS In a first-of-its kind bid to lessen the impact of school budget cuts, the Santa Monica Unified School District is accepting donations to pay teacher salaries. The school board on Thursday approved a plan that will allow donors to target their money to save programs they feel are priorities. Money can be earmarked to pay salaries in these areas: elementary school instruction, music instruction and library services or secondary school instruction and counseling. Donations are being accepted through the Santa Monica Malibu Education Foundation. Money must be received by Aug. 15 to impact staffing levels for the next school year. The fundraising drive comes after voters in a special mail-in election ending May 25 rejected Measure A, a $198 parcel tax that would have raised $5.7 million for SMMUSD annually for the next five years. “Because the state is obviously not gong to be able to meet the needs of our district and children throughout our state, we’re looking at ways to do what we need to do locally,” said Shari Davis, president of the Santa Monica Malibu Council of Parent Teacher Associations.

IRVINE In a game with so many subplots, there is one thing that is certain: Samohi’s softball team is a CIF champion. Santa Monica High School won its firstever California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section title in the sport on Saturday during a 11-3 rout of the North Torrance Saxons in the Division 4 final at Deanna Manning Stadium in Irvine. Samohi’s Emma Woo hit a deciding grand slam in the fifth inning to power the Vikings to victory. “I’m just speechless,” Samohi Head Coach Debbie Skaggs said. Saturday was the end to a season that has seen its share of emotion. The game was the last for Samohi’s Skaggs, who has coached the Vikings for 24 seasons. It was also played in tribute to late Athletic Director Norm Lacy, who passed away a week prior. The pressure was also on a North team that was attempting to win a third-straight title in Division 4. All of those facts collided Saturday as the Wendy Perl perlphoto.com

Fiorina, Whitman making final push before statewide election JULIET WILLIAMS SAMANTHA YOUNG Associated Press Writers

RIVERSIDE Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina made a final push for votes Saturday in their bids for governor and U.S. Senate, invigorated by new polls showing them leading their Republican races just days ahead of Tuesday’s primary. Whitman held a boisterous outdoor rally at a historic former hotel where she unveiled new campaign signs, a signal she expected to

move into the general election to face presumptive Democratic nominee Jerry Brown. “When we win the primary on June 8th, then’s when the real work starts because we’re going to beat Jerry Brown,” the former eBay chief executive told a crowd of about 250 supporters at the Villa del Sol, where she kicked off her candidacy nine months ago. “Jerry Brown was already governor 35 years ago, and it was not a great run.” A Field Poll released Friday showed the former eBay chief executive with double the support of her Republican rival, state

Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner. Poizner spent the morning knocking on doors in Orange County and later held a low-key town hall question-and-answer session at the historic Mission Inn in Riverside, another Southern California Republican stronghold. Whitman was accompanied on a large stage by former Gov. Pete Wilson and former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, with a band playing from a balcony and shouting supporters decked out in campaign T-shirts. By contrast, Poizner held a

subdued meeting where he was introduced by local elected officials and a taxpayer advocate. Poizner called Whitman’s event a staged affair that was part of her pattern of trying to buy the governor’s office. Whitman, a billionaire, has spent a record-breaking $81 million to date, about $71 million of it from her own fortune; Poizner has spent $25 million of his own money. “This is a massive spending campaign where she’s clearly trying to buy the thing.
