District pulls back veil on special ed finances BY ASHLEY ARCHIBALD Daily Press Staff Writer

SMMUSD HDQTRS After nearly two years of work, Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District officials and members of the Special

Education District Advisory Committee completed their magnum opus — an analysis of the past decade of income and spending on special education, district wide. The topic had previously been shrouded in mystery by inconsistent reporting struc-

tures that made it difficult to compare spending and revenues on everything from salaries to legal costs. That opacity engendered mistrust within the community that could only see that the amount budgeted for special education was

BERGAMOT STATION U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan joined city officials for a tour of Bergamot Station Thursday morning to get a first-hand look at the future home of the Expo Light Rail station and mixed-use housing development. Donovan praised Santa Monica’s efforts to create a community that takes advantage of alternative forms of transportation while at the same time maintaining an authentic local feel. “This model in Santa Monica is what we’re trying to bring to other parts of the country,” Donovan said. To further the work, HUD awarded City Hall a $652,000 grant in November 2010 to fund part of the Bergamot Area Plan, which will create the framework to make sure the new development fits the community vision of a high-quality, mixed-use transit village surrounding the new Expo Light Rail station. The grant is one of the first made out of $170 million HUD will give to communities across the nation for planning efforts, the largest pot of money set aside for planning in generations, Donovan said. Those funds represent a collaboration between HUD, the Department of Transportation and the National Endowment of the Arts that specifically tries to promote sustainable communities by connecting housing to jobs, fostering local innovation and helping to build a clean energy economy. Perhaps just as important, the award gets City Hall’s foot in the door for another wave of funding for the construction piece of the project. “We’re giving you and all communities a built-in competitive edge,” Donovan said. “This is smarter government, where a single

CLAREMONT The Vikings’ first visit to the CIFSouthern Section boys’ tennis final since 1966 ended in a 10-8 defeat at the hands of Palm Desert on Wednesday at the Claremont Club. Santa Monica High School’s head coach Wilston Poon said that he was proud of his team’s effort in defeat during the Division 2 final, adding that this bodes well for the program going forward. “I definitely give my guys an A,” Poon said. “Guys are already talking about next year. It was a good stepping stone to reappear on that scene again.” Poon said the match could have gone either way, but his main singles player, Connor Tracy, lost to Palm Desert’s Abe Hugo, 7-6, in a tie breaker, striking a blow to Samohi’s title hopes. While Tracy couldn’t win the game, he did single the senior out for his strong play all season. Poon said that Tracy and fellow senior Conrad McKinnon deserved credit for helping lead the team back to the final for the first time in over four decades. “We just have to maintain that fire,” Poon said.“[The underclassmen] want it now. These guys are going to make a push next year.” SAMOHI SOFTBALL A DECORATED BUNCH
