THE EDUCATION ROCKS ISSUE
Students learn to share the road BY MELODY HANATANI Daily Press Staff Writer

brings out scores of high school students who roll onto campus on beach cruisers, 10speeds and road bikes shortly before the first bell rings, some expressing their enthusiasm through hoots, all united in their belief that theirs is the best mode of transportation. But in those semesterly “Bike to School” days at Santa Monica High School, several parents and biking advocates have taken notice of some rather alarming cycling practices, some students riding without helmets, others jumping on and off sidewalks, creating a safety problem for themselves and the people around. As a result, these cycling advocates — the Samohi Solar Alliance and Samohi Bike Coalition — recently banded together with parents to host a bike safety seminar at the high school over the weekend, teaching teenagers the essentials of road safety, from wearing a helmet to behaving like a motorist when on the street. The class, considered the first of its kind at Samohi, was led by two certified instructors with the League of American Bicyclists, starting the two-day course on Friday with a three-hour classroom lecture on road rules and safety and continuing on Sunday with a day-long behind-the-handlebars lesson on city streets. The $25 class drew about eight students over the two-day seminar. The course was proposed in part by Alison Kendall, a Samohi parent who serves

Running the show behind the scenes BY MELODY HANATANI Daily Press Staff Writer
BOULDER Aaron Elgart took a seat in his technical theater class, a young freshman somewhat lost in his first day of college when a professor asked aloud what would be a life-changing question, wondering if any students were interested in participating in stage management activities. Without hesitation Elgart’s hand shot up. The day would mark the end of a long career-searching path shared by many young adults like Elgart, a Samohi graduate who
went from hopeful actor to aspiring set designer to a stage management wonder. “It’s a different sensation from being on stage,” Elgart said during a recent interview. “It’s being able to see what’s going on stage and being able to control it as well, seeing the audience reaction before, during and after the show.” “It’s a different kind of high than performing, but the same kind of exhilaration.” Elgart, who graduated from the University of Colorado earlier this month with a bachelor’s degree in theater, was recently accepted into The Juilliard School

Professional Intern Program, a prestigious internship in which the Santa Monica resident will be able to spend nine months in New York City working for the worldrenowned conservatory. The program will allow Elgart to work alongside some of the best personalities in the industry, having the opportunity later in the internship to manage second-year drama student projects. Elgart was one of six people from across the country who received the internship. Alexandra Bissonnette news@smdp.com
