■ Management at the Globe Hotel in Topsham, England, reported in February that a guest had dismantled and removed the entire shower unit out of his room. And Norwegian Arild Nicolaysen told reporters in February, after arriving at his mountain cabin for the weekend, that the in-ground swimming pool was missing (steel lining, plastic liner, filter, hoses and pipes). And in March, police in Lindale, Texas, arrested two men who they said had taken a house apart, brick by brick, board by board, over a three-month period and sold the materials for drugs. ■ Tennessee state Sen. John Ford testified in a juvenile court hearing in January that his child support payments should be reduced, in accordance with a state law that he had introduced on behalf of fathers with many children. Ford owns two homes, lives part-time in one with his ex-wife and their three children (with another on the way), and lives part-time in the other with an ex-girlfriend and their two children. Hence, he said, he should have lesser payments to a third woman, who is the mother of his 10-year-old daughter.

TODAY IN HISTORY Today is the 150th day of 2005. There are 215 days left in the year. This is the Memorial Day observance.

More than 1,000 crosses line the sandy shore north of the Santa Monica Pier to represent American soldiers who have died in the Iraq War. The ritual of placing the crosses on the shores of Santa Monica has been performed every Sunday since early 2004 by the local chapter of Veterans of Peace. The only difference is the number of crosses grows each week. The project, dubbed “Arlington West,” is highly visible to the thousands of people who frequent the pier and beach. Organizers say they plan to continue the memorial until the war is over. Many who stop at the memorial look at the detailed list of soldiers killed, often times seeing their own hometown. They’re given the opportunity to write a soldier’s name on a slip of paper and place it on a cross, along with flowers, pictures or personal mementos.

On May 30, 1431, Joan of Arc, condemned as a heretic, was burned at the stake in Rouen, France. In 1539, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto landed in Florida.

U.N. ‘Culture of Peace’ to open in SM BY RYAN HYATT Daily Press Staff

DOWNTOWN — Supporters of world peace have a new resource center from which to draw information and inspiration in Santa Monica. Soka Gakkai International USA, a Buddhist organization, is opening a “Culture of Peace” resource center next month at 606 Wilshire Blvd. The resource center is part of a United Nationsbacked program to promote modes of behavior that reject violence by trying to tackle its root causes. The 400-square-foot facility will house computers and reference materials related to peace. All of the center’s resources will

be available to the public, said Ian McIlraith, a spokesperson for SGI USA, which owns the building where the center is will be located. Construction is being finished, and the public opening is slated for July. To honor the creation of the community resource, Ambassador Anwarul Chowdhury — who served as president of the U.N. Security Council while acting as Bangladesh’s ambassador to the world body — addressed a crowd of 100 at the center on May 23. “We should not separate ourselves from others,” Chowdhury said. “The more we feel part of a ‘global village,’ the more we feel empowered to build a culture of See PEACE CENTER, page 7
