Taller buildings endorsed by commission BY NICK TABOREK Daily Press Staff Writer
CITY HALL In a series of votes late on Monday, the Planning Commission supported allowing developers to build taller
projects in most areas of the city, sparking criticism from neighborhood activists and their allies on the commission. The votes amount to recommendations about sections of the Land Use and Circulation Element that the City Council
will consider as it finalizes the long-range planning document in June. The recommendations urge the council to increase the maximum allowable project height by between 2 and 6 feet from the limits contained in the draft version of the
LUCE in different areas of the city. Under the commission’s recommendations, the biggest height change would be at the Bergamot Transit Village, where, by a 4SEE HEIGHTS PAGE 8

DOWNTOWN Early returns have Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District’s emergency parcel tax failing to gain the necessary two-thirds vote for approval, according to results posted by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder. As of 8 p.m. Tuesday, Measure A received 11,330 votes or 63.18 percent. County election officials said there were 6,603 votes against the measure, which would tax property owners $198 per parcel. SAMOHI For a team that doesn’t face adversity very often, the Santa Monica High School Vikings proved that they can do the little things that win close playoff games. The Samohi Vikings softball team didn’t streak out to their customary big lead against Garden Grove on Tuesday on campus, but instead had to plod its way to a 3-1 victory during the second round of the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Division 4 playoffs. “It felt great getting a tough win,” said Samohi’s Holly Elander, who drove in the second run of the game for Samohi with a run-scoring single. “We are ready this year.” The game was dominated by starting pitching: Celisha Walker for Samohi and Jasmine Antunez for Garden Grove. Both hurlers pitched a complete game, but it was Walker who walked away with her second win of the postseason. Walker finished the day giving up one run and striking out five. “Their pitcher was great,” Garden Grove Head Coach John Petrie said of Walker. “I really can’t think of one negative.” Walker began the game by breezing through the first three innings. It wasn’t until the fourth that Garden Grove broke through and tied the score at 1-1 with an RBI single by Garden Grove’s Briana Williams. Antunez followed and sacrificed Williams to second giving Garden Grove a runner in scoring position with one out.

Bobby Shriver, a member of the Kennedy clan and brother of California’s first lady, was selected Tuesday as Santa Monica’s new mayor, replacing the late Ken Genser, who died earlier this year. Shriver, who was elected to the City Council in 2004, was nominated by Councilman Bob Holbrook. He was supported by Councilmember Kevin McKeown and Terry O’Day, who failed to cast a deciding vote in March, drawing out the selection process. Mayor Pro Tem Pam O’Connor was nom-
