■ To free up soldiers for war-zone duty, the Army hires contractors to man the gates at 57 domestic installations, including Fort Bragg and West Point, but in April, the Government Accountability Office announced that, despite three warnings, some of the contractors continue to hire an alarming number of convicted felons as security guards. ■ Nashville’s The Tennessean newspaper revealed in April that a man still serving time for hiring a hit man to kill his wife was actually put in charge of the purchasing office of the state’s emergency management agency. Inmate Daniel Erickson was participating in a rehabilitation program intended to help prisoners find work when they get out and apparently was so good at his job that agency officials promoted him.

LA zeroes in on airport BY KEVIN HERRERA Daily Press Staff Writer
SM AIRPORT If the City of Los Angeles has its way, City Hall will have to get busy watching planes sit still. Earlier this week, the Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously to support a proposed law requiring City Hall to record for one year how long
aircraft engines are running at the airport, which in turn can give Los Angeles residents living just east of the runway a better idea as to the level of emissions wafting into their homes. The measure would force City Hall to spend $450,000 or more monitoring the idling times of airSee AIRPORT, page 13

SALT LAKE CITY A campground at Natural Bridges National Monument in southeastern Utah reopened this week after a threeweek closure to make certain no traces remained of bubonic plague, which was detected in rodents at the monument last month. Santa Monica and Los Angeles County officials have had similar concerns with the squirrel population in Palisades Park. After receiving a summons Jan. 16 from the county health department regarding non-compliance with the health and safety code, City Hall was ordered to kill squirrels who live in the Palisades Bluffs or face legal
CITY HALL Dissatisfied with the leadership at Santa Monica High School, hundreds of people flooded into the school board meeting here on Thursday, ultimately forcing the Fire Department to shut it down out of safety concerns. However, the sincerity of some of those dissenters remains at question, with many of those in attendance Thursday night being students seeking extra credit. One teacher who admits he offered his charges extra credit for their showing was Michael Felix, a history teacher who contends he only wanted students to participate in the democratic process. The majority of those on hand expressed their displeasure with Samohi’s Chief Educational Officer and lead principal, Ilene Straus, whose leadership style, they claim, has created a division amongst students and teachers. There is also concern amongst faculty regarding Samohi’s recent redesign into six small learning communities, or houses, each with its own principal. Many question whether or not it has accomplished its goals of allowing for more specialized instruction and the fostering of stronger relationships between students and faculty, as well as administrators. Felix said he was lobbied by a fellow teacher and union member to have his students come to Thursday’s meeting. “I gave into the peer pressure, and
