THE STOP LYING ISSUE

AP scores show gap among races BY MELODY HANATANI Daily Press Staff Writer

MALIBU CITY HALL As high school students in Santa Monica and Malibu prepare to pour a year’s worth of classroom learning into the Advanced Placement tests this week, school officials received encouraging news about the direction of the AP program. The number of students enrolling in AP courses has steadily increased at both Santa

Monica and Malibu high schools since the 2002-2003 school year. The news — coming during last Thursday’s Board of Education meeting when Educational Services presented results from last year’s AP exams — show AP enrollment percentages at both Samohi and Malibu exceed the state average of 25 percent. About 55 percent of juniors and seniors at Santa Monica High School were enrolled

in AP courses last year, while 54 percent of juniors and seniors at Malibu High School take on the difficult course work. The rigorous AP classes give high school students a taste of college-level coursework. Students can receive college credit on AP courses if they receive a passing score on the examinations, rated on a scale of one to five with three typically being the passing grade. Approximately 65 percent of the AP students at Samohi received a score of 3 or

higher on the AP test. With a 10 percent jump in AP enrollment from the 2004-2005 school year to the 2005-2006 school year, Samohi in particular saw a significant jump. But the numbers are inflated since many students enroll in more than one AP course. The actual number of AP students in Samohi was 869 last year, said Maureen SEE SCORES PAGE 13
