Samohi comes from behind to stay unbeaten Vikings score late to snatch win over rival Beverly Hills BY DANIEL ARCHULETA Managing Editor
SAMOHI Nothing like a good old fashioned rivalry to make for interesting baseball. Down 7-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Santa Monica High School rallied for three runs in the frame to steal a win from Beverly Hills on Tuesday on campus. The win gives Samohi a perfect 6-0 record in Ocean League play, good for a tie with Culver City atop the standings. Beverly Hills falls to 3-4 in league, yet clings to third place and a chance to make it to the playoffs. Junior Adam Padilla again was key for the Samohi Vikings. The outfielder delivered in the clutch during that sixth-inning rally with a two-RBI single to center field that gave the Vikings a three-run cushion. But, the play wasn’t without controversy. With one out and two runners on base, Padilla appeared to be hit in the foot by a pitch from Beverly Hills starter Charlie Bennett. Padilla trotted down to first base, but the umpires huddled after the play ultimately deciding that the ball hit the dirt before striking Padilla. The junior returned to the plate and calmly slapped an outside fast ball to center to secure the victory. “I was ready to take one for the team,” Padilla said of the play. “But I was happy for the second opportunity.” Samohi’s late-game heroics aside, the
Synagogue blast suspect indicted by grand jury ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES A homeless man has been indicted on charges of planting an explosive that detonated outside a synagogue in Santa Monica last month. A federal grand jury on Tuesday brought four counts against 60-year-old Ron Hirsch, including use of an explosive to damage property. He could face up to 70 years in prison if found guilty of all charges. Hirsch is accused of planting explosives inside a 250-pound piece of concrete and steel pipe that blasted into the air on April 7, striking the side of Chabad House and damaging a nearby home. Authorities say Hirsh fled by bus and was taken into custody in Cleveland four days later. Hirsh is scheduled to be arraigned May 23. His attorney Robert Little said he hadn’t read the indictment and couldn’t comment.
Bill would make it easier for renters to fight eviction BY ASHLEY ARCHIBALD Daily Press Staff Writer
Morgan Genser news@smdp.com
CITYWIDE A bill that extends renters’ rights passed a crucial hurdle at the State Judiciary Committee last week, and will now move onto the Assembly floor. The bill, called AB 265 and authored by San Francisco Democrat Tom Ammiano, would allow tenants who have been served a three-day notice to “pay or quit” to keep their homes if they pay back rent, new rent costs and reasonable attorneys’ fees during their eviction proceedings. Tenants’ responsibility for attorneys’ fees would be capped at $350 for pre-trial proceedings, although that cap goes out the window should the process move ahead to formal trial. The legislation would give renters the
