College shooting hits home Virginia Tech massacre raises questions about campus security BY MELODY HANATANI Daily Press Staff Writer
SANTA MONICA COLLEGE The 23-year-old student who shot and killed 32 people at Virginia Tech on Monday has left students and faculty at college campuses across the country asking themselves the question: Could this happen here? Cho Seung-Hui, a senior English major at Virginia Tech, went on a shooting rampage on the Blacksburg campus on Monday, killing students and faculty before taking his own life.
“We share the world’s grief and horror at the tragic shooting that has occurred at Virginia Tech,” SMC Superintendent and President Chui L. Tsang said in a statement released to the campus community on Tuesday. “And as a community, I am sure some of us have questions about safety at Santa Monica College.” SMC student Carlos Brabo was shocked when he learned of the massacre at Virginia Tech. The college freshman said he was especially surprised to learn the gunman was a student. “I don’t think something like that could happen here, but you never know,” he said. “There’s too much pressure [as a student].” Fabian Lewkowicz fabianl@smdp.com
