SM COURTHOUSE — After a nearly two-year investigation into alleged drug use and prostitution at two Santa Monica motels, the owner of the establishments on Friday escaped 88 of the 99 criminal charges levied against him. Maurice Farzam pleaded no contest to the remaining 11 misdemeanor counts, including committing a public nuisance at the Holiday and American motels, attempting to receive a stolen credit card and violating a variety of health and safety codes. It’s that time of year again. Most Americans will return to daylight savings time this weekend, resetting their clocks ahead by one hour at 2 a.m. Sunday. The reward is an additional hour of daylight in the evening for warm-weather outdoor activities. Standard time returns Oct. 26.

Federal law does not require any area to observe daylight savings time, and a few parts of the country like Arizona, Hawaii, the section of Indiana in the Eastern time zone, Puerto Rico and Guam have opted not to do so. The Daily Press fielded e-mails from concerned residents who saw the Coast Guard helicopter hovering above the Baywatch boat Wednesday, lifting bodies up from the deck of the boat while riding into the wind. Los Angeles County Fire Department Lifeguard Garth Canning said the emergency workers may have attracted additional attention this time because of the use of flares during their three-hour exercise. Canning assured residents, however, that nobody was injured and the drill went off without a hitch.
