EASTSIDE The thought of making Olympic and Pico boulevards one-way streets has Charles Burns smiling like a kid on Christmas morning. “I think it’s great,” the mortgage broker said following an afternoon workout Friday at a nearby gym. “It can take me as much as an hour just to get from Santa Monica to Westwood during rush hour. It’s literally like a parking lot, so anything they can do to help, I’m all for it.” Burns isn’t the only one. The idea of making the major thoroughfares flow in opposite directions from downtown Los Angeles to Santa Monica is gaining momentum and generating buzz throughout the Westside. Announced as the new head coach of the SMC men’s basketball team on Thursday, Teplitzky spoke about his personal recipe for building a successful team, starting with instilling both modesty and common courtesy into his players. “There is something that comes with being an athlete on a college campus,” he said. “I want the kids on campus dayto-day to be humble and handle that in the right way and not take advantage of that kind of stature.” A native of Colorado, Teplitzky started playing basketball in fifth grade, attending basketball camps and clinics SEE COACH PAGE 12
