Roy Allen Boothe Jr., 18, was arrested after allegedly attempting to rob a Delta One Shop convenience store near York, Pa., in January. When he threatened the two female clerks with a tire iron, the women started punching and kicking him, until he begged for them to stop. After a few minutes (but with police on the way), he managed to wiggle away and run (though one clerk slugged him with his own tire iron on the way out).

The missing son of a Marina del Rey resident, last believed to have been seen in Santa Monica, has been found. Nick Segovia, 16, disappeared after his father Javier Segovia dropped him off at Los Angeles Airport on Monday. By Thursday, Nick Segovia called his father from Huntington Beach saying he wanted to come home. “He called me up and said ‘Dad, I want to come home with you,’” Javier Segovia said. “He volunteered a few things, said he was safe, so I didn’t ask any questions. I didn’t want to take any chances.” Javier Segovia said his son will be enrolled in an ongoing counseling program which will allow him to continue working on achieving his high school diploma. Nick Segovia used to live with his father in Southern California until he failed 10th grade last year. He moved in with his mother in Miami where he has continued to have trouble academically, his father said. Nick Segovia was visiting his

SM COURTHOUSE — Justice here will now be served in style, or at least in acceptable working conditions. After 1 1/2 years of construction and a total cost of $4.4 million, the annex at the Santa Monica Courthouse officially opened on Friday. The building, located in the back portion of the courthouse, will serve as three new civil courtrooms. The twostory, 13,736-square-foot facility will also house a childcare center and self-help center, where law students will assist people who opt to represent themselves. The annex replaced three modular civil courtrooms in the courthouse’s courtyard that were supposed to serve as temporary structures for only two years, but lasted See IN SESSION, page 6
Feeling insecure at SM Courthouse BY CAROLYN SACKARIASON Daily Press Staff Writer
SM COURTHOUSE — In a place where disputes are hashed out daily, court officials must remain on high alert, but that’s becoming increasingly difficult as security budgets are slashed. Faced with an $11 million cutback in security throughout the entire Los Angeles Superior Court system this year, Santa Monica Judge Linda Lefkowitz said she’s concerned about the safety of her staff and the public. Lefkowitz, who presides over the West District — comprised of five courthouses on the westside — said bailiffs have been removed from most of the courtrooms, leaving See COURT SAFETY, page 7
