SAMOHI The hunt for a number two starter may be over for Santa Monica High School’s baseball team.

Junior Alonzo Gonzalez allowed just two hits while striking out four en route to a 2-0 win over Chaminade on Saturday at Samohi as part of the Lions Tournament.

Gonzalez allowed just one hit over six innings in collecting the victory. The tall left hander is now 3-1 on the season and may have moved one step closer to becoming the Vikings’ second starter behind standout Tyler Skaggs.

“I knew (Chaminade) was going to be aggressive,” Gonzalez said. “I really wanted to make them think.”

Gonzalez got out to a fast start in the first inning by striking out the leadoff batter. He went on to strike out two in the first frame. He began the second inning giving up a single to Greg Goshgarian. With a man on first, Gonzalez was able to force a pair of batters to fly out to right field.

The only credible Chaminade scoring opportunity came later in the second inning with Ryan Torres at the plate.

Gonzalez, who threw a handful of balls in the dirt during the first two innings, threw a wild pitch that catcher Colter Johnson couldn’t grab. Goshgarian advanced to second on the

play, but was stranded when Torres popped out to third base.

“I started to see that they were guessing,” Gonzalez said of Chaminade’s struggles at the plate. “I saw that they were looking for the fast ball so I tried to take something off of it.”

Chaminade Head Coach Frank Mutz said that it was hard for his offensive players to get on track because Gonzalez was consistently ahead in the count.

“Samohi had a guy who was around the plate all day,” Mutz said. “My guys struggled with the fast ball. They just didn’t hit it.”

Despite collecting the loss, he was happy with the performance of his starter, senior Tyler Faust.

The hard-throwing right hander allowed just three hits over five innings allowing just two earned runs.

All of the damage on offense took place during the third inning. Samohi freshman Adam Padilla led off the third with a walk. Senior shortstop Ricky Gomez followed with a double, moving Padilla to third. With a pair of men in scoring position, Head Coach Rob Duron called for Vince Lawrence to lay down a sacrifice bunt scoring Padilla on the play with Gomez advancing to third. Matias Letelier followed and again a squeeze was called.

Letelier laid down a near perfect bunt that died just feet down the third base line. Gomez scored on the play, making it 2-0.

“We really executed on some stuff that I’ve been preaching all along,” Duron said.“These guys are really starting to believe in what we’re trying to get accomplished around here.”

Miley and Hannah team up for big opening DAVID GERMAIN AP Movie Writer

LOS ANGELES Miley Cyrus and alter-ego Hannah Montana have double-teamed their way to another No. 1 box office debut.

Walt Disney’s “Hannah Montana: The Movie” opened with $34 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

That followed Cyrus’ first-place premiere last year with her 3-D concert film.

The movie is a big-screen installment of the Disney Channel series about an ordinary teen living a double life as pop star Hannah.

“Hannah Montana” drew $17.3 million on Friday for the biggest opening day ever for a G-rated live-action movie.

While girls 12 and younger and their moms made up most of the audience, “Hannah Montana” also attracted a solid crowd of teenage girls, fans reaching the age when they might be outgrowing the show, said Mark Zoradi, president of Disney’s motion-picture group.

“Miley’s audience stayed with her,” Zoradi said. “Those that enjoyed the show on TV and maybe have become young teens themselves came back for the movie.”

The previous weekend’s box-office champ, “Fast & Furious,” fell to second-place with $28.8 million. The street-racing thriller raised its domestic take to $118 million, and distributor Universal said its worldwide total has topped $200 million.

Seth Rogen’s “Observe and Report” opened at No. 4 with $11.1 million, a fair but unremarkable debut for the Warner Bros. comedy about an emotionally unstable mall cop trying to catch a flasher and gain entry to the police academy.

It was a slightly better opening for Rogen than last fall’s “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” ($10.1 million) but far below the $20 million and $30 million debuts of his previous comedies “Knocked Up” and “Pineapple Express.”

New homes may soon be energy producers STEVE LAWRENCE Associated Press Writer

SACRAMENTO If state Assemblywoman Lori Saldana has her way, buyers of California homes built a little more than a decade from now would not have to worry about paying big electricity bills. The homes would produce power themselves.

The San Diego Democrat has introduced legislation that would require all homes built starting in about 2020 to be socalled zero net energy buildings. That means they would be extremely energy efficient and produce enough power to offset any electricity they draw from the grid.

That homegrown power would probably come from solar panels. But it also could be generated by nearby wind or geothermal plants, said Bernadette Del Chiaro, a clean energy advocate with the group

The measure is on the agenda of the Assembly Natural Resources Committee on Monday. It is one of more than 400 bills scheduled to be considered this week as lawmakers return from an Easter recess.

“What you do is use the grid like a giant battery,” Del Chiaro said. “You send surplus energy during the day to the grid and then offset that by drawing energy from the grid at night. That’s how you basically get the bill down to nothing.”

Saldana’s legislation would require new homes to meet zero net energy requirements by Jan. 1, 2020, or when the California Energy Commission determines that use of solar systems is cost-effective, whichever comes later.

Del Chiaro said she expects that currently available state rebates and federal tax

breaks will create enough of a mainstream market for solar systems over the next 10 years to cut their cost in half.

Saldana said her bill would help cut the emissions blamed for global warming by reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

“About a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions are related to buildings — heating and cooling them,” she said. “Looking at ways to build smarter will have significant and beneficial impacts on reducing greenhouse gases and avoiding more impacts of climate change.”

Tim Coyle, senior vice president of the California Building Industry Association, said new homes being built in California today already are highly energy efficient.

He said Saldana should be looking for ways to reduce electricity use in older housing instead of targeting new construction.

Obama. Yes, he seems ubiquitous. He's everywhere; even in my dreams, inspiring oneiric terror! Here the word bailout keeps being repeated, an ominous mantra adumbrating my vanishing savings. How I long for those halcyon days of relative fiscal security before the deluge of massive spending began to inundate the nation. Will government spending ever abate or stop?

Is there no hope of reason stemming the tide? Please make a voice of sanity tell the captain of this disaster that we've reached the limit of this "bailout amourette ... the ship is sinking.

Library closes book on public discourse

to view pornography (called “perving”) has been an issue at our and other libraries across the country.

Recent letters to the editor printed here and in other local publications have been critical of the Santa Monica Main Library for not doing more to prevent children from inadvertently viewing inappropriate materials on library computers in the “adult” computer area.

Other letters have expressed concern about patrons entering the Main Library with backpacks, carts and bags that may contain weapons or contraband. Some have suggested bag searches and screening individuals for weapons as is done at airports.

With Santa Monica home to hundreds of mentally challenged street people — many of whom regularly patronize the library — the possibility of a tragic incident such as the recent Binghampton shootings, although unlikely, is possible. So, when the board’s April meeting was scheduled for the Montana Avenue Library,and both items were on the agenda. I dropped in.

Greg Mullen, the city’s head librarian, ran the meeting. They quickly moved to Item 6: letters to the editor. After a library board member noted one letter had been written by Jo Kranitz (SMDP, March 17, Page 4 “Porno has no place in the library”), they agreed to close discussion and move to Item 7.

I asked the board if it was going to comment. “No,” I was told. I asked what precautions were in use or could be beefed up to insure that underage children are not exposed to inappropriate materials. I received a blank look from the commissioners. Mullen said the subject wasn’t on the agenda.

I was told that library policies were available at all the libraries and on-line. “This is not an open discussion,” Mullen said. My comments were heard and they were not required to answer or have a conversation.

Then, they moved to the next agenda item.

I’d had enough. I got up and left.

For the record, here’s what’s posted on City Hall’s Web site: “As with all other library materials, children’s access to and use of the Internet is the sole responsibility of the child’s parent or legal guardian. The Internet may provide access to information, content and services some of which parents may feel is inappropriate or objectionable for their own children. The Library and its staff cannot censor access to materials or prevent users from encountering materials on the Internet that they may find offensive.”

I found Mullen and the library board to be dismissive and evasive at their monthly meeting. Afterwards, I e-mailed my ques-

tions to Mullen and he did respond.

Concerning not discussing child access to inappropriate materials, Mullen replied, “The board had recently reviewed the policy addressed in the letter (to the editor) and that they were not planning to review it again that evening.”

He reiterated the policy noting, “staff cannot … prevent users from encountering materials on the Internet that they may find offensive.” This is a cop-out. This has nothing to do with censorship. It’s about taking precautions to prevent children from being even inadvertently exposed to some adult “users” computer while he/she are viewing harmful materials. If movie theaters can restrict access to adult materials, the library can, too.

Responding to my assertion that pubic comment and input was stonewalled at the meeting, Mullen e-mailed, “The practice of allowing public input and comment separate from the discussion of an issue is intended to create a clear distinction between the role of the public and the role of the body that is meeting. The Brown Act (state regulations governing public meetings) is clear about the right of the public to comment on matters before the body addresses the matter.” But, my reading of the Brown Act says that some public dialog on any issues under the purview of the board before or during the items discussion is allowed.

Mullen e-mailed, “The last meeting was a ‘special’ meeting because of its location,” [Montana Avenue as opposed to the Main Library] which was why public comment was limited to the items listed on the agenda.

“At a regular meeting there is an opportunity for public input on any matter that falls under the jurisdiction of the library board.”

Excuse me. It appears this is an excuse for basically curtailing discussion on issues that Mullen and the board members didn’t want to address. And, “letters to the press about children’s exposure to inappropriate materials” was on the board’s agenda.

On security concerns, Mullen e-mailed, “We don’t screen individuals as they enter library facilities … . There are no metal detectors or searches conducted upon entry.” Apparently, safety issues aren’t a big concern, either.

I’m still not satisfied. The poorly run meeting blew an opportunity for those overseeing the library to communicate, discourse with the public and maybe make some new friends for the library. And, that too is a tragedy.

Local newspapers are the key to Democracy WITH NEWSPAPER READERSHIP AND

circulation continuing to drop, more and more local newspapers are being forced out of business. However, as a recent poll by the Pew Research Center indicates: “Many of those who say the closing of the local paper wouldn’t make much, if any, difference in their communities note that there are other news sources available.”

Young people, in particular, are more inclined to get their news from the internet.

According to Pew, only 27 percent of those born after 1976 read newspapers, as opposed to 55 percent of those born prior to 1946.

One person who believes the closure of the local paper would make no difference to civic life stated: “There are other forms of communication that are more important and easier to follow. I either go to television or turn on the radio in my car.”

There are, however, serious problems with this line of thinking.

First, anyone who relies exclusively on television for knowledge of the world is making a serious mistake. TV news networks, having fallen prey to the demands of a celebrity-obsessed and entertainment-driven culture, provide viewers with what they want to see, rather than what is newsworthy.

Second, the emergence of the corporate media has ensured that a handful of corporations now control most of the media industry and, thus, the information dished out to the public by the national media.

Finally, there are very important things happening at the local level of government and community life that national newspapers, television news and online news do not — and cannot — cover. Local newspapers tell us what’s going on in our local councils of government, in our schools, on our streets.

The basic mission of the media is to serve as a check on the government. That is why the freedom of the press is such an integral part of our First Amendment. Our founders understood the vital importance of the press in maintaining an educated citizenry and a transparent government. However, even freedom of the press will not make much of a difference if there are no local newspapers keeping watch over what’s happening in our own back yards.

Local newspapers are the clarion call of democracy. “The power of the periodical press is second only to that of the people,”

wrote French historian Alexis de Tocqueville in Democracy in America, one of the definitive works on early America. Tocqueville understood that governmental power flows up from our local towns, cities and counties — that’s where democracy happens. Hence, the Constitution begins with those three beautiful words: “We, the people.”

However, we’ve been deceived into believing that the most important governmental matters are housed in Washington, DC. In truth, the real government, the one that Abraham Lincoln spoke of as being a government of the people, by the people and for the people, is housed in small towns across this country. That’s where democracy is being played out on an everyday basis.

Unfortunately, in subscribing to the false notion that national news are somehow more relevant than local news, we have mistakenly bought into the idea that what the talking heads in Washington, DC, have to say is more important than the dialogue taking place between average Americans and their representatives at the local level.

That’s where we’re failing in our democracy today. The founders did not establish a national government. Rather, America was intended to be a conglomeration of small governments, not one big government. In this way, the cities, towns and counties were to be the basis of American democracy. As Tocqueville wrote about early America, “every village forms a sort of republic accustomed to conduct its own affairs.”

This idea is at the heart of federalism.

The truly literate and involved American should be reading the local newspaper. Weekly newspapers and the internet are also vital to maintaining an educated citizenry. We must ensure that they continue to flourish because they are all important resources for maintaining a healthy democracy.

And you need to do your part, as well.

Subscribe to your local newspaper. Read it so you’ll know what’s happening in your community. And when you disagree, let your local politicians know — even if it is with a picket sign in hand.

Kidnapped U.S. captain freed

NAIROBI, Kenya Navy snipers on the fantail of a destroyer cut down three Somali pirates in a lifeboat and rescued an American sea captain in a surprise nighttime assault in choppy seas Easter Sunday, ending a five-day standoff between a team of rogue gunmen and the world’s most powerful military.

It was a stunning ending to an Indian Ocean odyssey that began when 53-year-old freighter Capt. Richard Phillips was taken hostage Wednesday by pirates who tried to hijack the U.S.-flagged Maersk Alabama.

The Vermont native was held on a tiny lifeboat that began drifting precariously toward Somalia’s anarchic, gun-plagued shores.

The operation, personally approved by President Barack Obama, quashed fears the saga could drag on for months and marked a victory for the U.S., which for days seemed powerless to resolve the crisis despite massing helicopter-equipped warships at the scene.

Negotiations with the three pirates were growing heated, Vice Adm. Bill Gortney said.

One of them pointed an AK-47 at the back of Phillips, who was tied up and in “imminent danger” of being killed when the commander of the nearby USS Bainbridge made the split-second decision to order his men to shoot, Gortney said. Navy snipers took aim at the pirates’ heads and shoulders, he said. The lifeboat was about 25-30 yards away and was being towed by the Bainbridge at the time, he said.

A fourth pirate had surrendered earlier in the day and could face life in a U.S. prison.

The rescue was a dramatic blow to the

pirates who have preyed on international shipping and hold more than a dozen ships with about 230 foreign sailors. But it is unlikely to do much to quell the region’s growing pirate threat, which has transformed one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes into one of its most dangerous. It also risked provoking retaliatory attacks.

“This could escalate violence in this part of the world, no question about it,” said Gortney, the commander of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command.

Abdullahi Lami, one of the pirates holding the Greek ship anchored in the Somali town of Gaan, said: “Every country will be treated the way it treats us. In the future, America will be the one mourning and crying,” he told The Associated Press. “We will retaliate (for) the killings of our men.”

Jamac Habeb, a 30-year-old self-proclaimed pirate, told the AP from one of Somalia’s piracy hubs, Eyl, that: “From now on, if we capture foreign ships and their respective countries try to attack us, we will kill them (the hostages).”

“Now they became our number one enemy,” Habeb said of U.S. forces.

Phillips was not hurt in several minutes of gunfire and the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet said he was resting comfortably on a U.S. warship after receiving a medical exam.

Aboard the Bainbridge, sailors passed along a message from Andrea Phillips to her husband: “Richard, your family loves you, your family is praying for you, and your family is saving a chocolate Easter egg for you, unless your son eats it first.”

Phillips himself deflected any praise.

“I’m just the byline. The real heroes are the Navy, the Seals, those who have brought

me home,” Phillips said by phone to Maersk Line Limited President and CEO John Reinhart, the company head told reporters.

A photo released by the Navy showed Phillips unharmed and shaking hands with the commanding officer of the USS Bainbridge.

Obama said Phillips had courage that was “a model for all Americans” and he was pleased about the rescue, adding that the United States needs help from other countries to deal with the threat of piracy and to hold pirates accountable.

With news of the rescue, Phillips’ 17,000ton ship, which docked with the 19 members of his crew Saturday in Mombasa, Kenya, erupted into wild cheers. Some waved an American flag and one fired a bright red flare skyward in celebration.

“We made it!” said crewman ATM Reza, pumping his fist in the air.

The ship had been carrying food aid bound for Rwanda, Somalia and Uganda when the ordeal began hundreds of miles off Somalia’s eastern coast Wednesday. Crew members said they saw pirates scrambling into the ship with ropes and hooks from a small boat bobbing on the surface of the Indian Ocean far below.

As the pirates shot in the air, Phillips told his crew to lock themselves in a cabin and surrendered himself to safeguard his men, crew members said.

Phillips was then taken hostage in an enclosed lifeboat that was soon shadowed by three U.S. warships and a helicopter in a standoff that grew by the day. The pirates were believed armed with pistols and AK-47 assault rifles.

Talks to free him began Thursday with the captain of the USS Bainbridge talking to

the pirates under instruction from FBI hostage negotiators on board the U.S. destroyer. The pirates had threatened to kill Phillips if attacked.

A government official and others in Somalia with knowledge of the situation said negotiations broke down late Saturday.

The stumbling block, Somali officials said: Americans’ insistence the pirates be arrested and brought to justice.

Phillips jumped out of the lifeboat Friday and tried to swim for his freedom but was recaptured when a pirate fired an automatic weapon into the water, according to U.S. Defense Department officials speaking on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk about the unfolding operations.

On Saturday, pirates fired a few shots at a small U.S. Navy vessel that had approached, but the U.S. sailors did not return fire.

The U.S. Navy had assumed the pirates would try to get their hostage to shore, where they could have hidden him on Somalia’s lawless soil and been in a stronger position to negotiate a ransom.

Somalia’s government, which barely controls any territory in the country, welcomed the news of Phillips’ rescue.

“The Somali government wanted the drama to end in a peaceful way, but any one who is involved in this latest case had the choice to use violence or other means,” Abdulkhadir Walayo, the prime minister’s spokesman, told the AP. “We see it will be a good lesson for the pirates or any one else involved in this dirty business.”

Worried residents of Harardhere, another port and pirate stronghold, were gathering in the streets after news of the captain’s release.

The Navy Seals late Sunday rescued freighter Capt. Richard Phillips, who had been held by pirates on a lifeboat that drifted in the Indian Ocean for five days.

“In the future, America will be the one mourning and crying,” he told The Associated Press by telephone. “We will retaliate for the killings of our men.”

He gave no details and it was not clear in what way the pirates could retaliate, though some fear they could take their revenge on the hundreds of other foreign nationals they hold on seized ships.

The rescue dealt a blow to pirates who regularly seize passing ships and hold them

captive until multimillion dollar ransoms are paid. But it is unlikely to help quell the region’s growing pirate threat, which has turned the Gulf of Aden and the waterways along Somalia’s coast into some of the most dangerous shipping lanes on the planet.

Pirates currently hold more than a dozen foreign ships, most moored along the Horn of Africa nation’s long coast, with about 230 foreign sailors from Russia to the Philippines.

The American rescue followed a similar operation Friday carried out by French navy commandos, who stormed a pirate-held

sailboat, the Tanit, in a shootout at sea that killed two pirates and freed four French hostages. The French owner of the vessel was also killed in the assault.

Residents of the Somali town of Harardhere said tensions were growing there.

Abdullahi Haji Jama, who owns a clothing store in the town, said: “We fear that the pirates may retaliate against the foreign nationals they are holding.”

But he also said people feared “any revenge taken by the pirates against foreign nationals could bring more attacks.”

Red River tributary is ready to flood

HORACE, N.D. Residents of the Fargo area already have survived one threatening flood crest this spring on the Red River and are hunkered down for another. For others in the region, it’s been more like slow torture as they wait for high water to peak on one of the Red’s little brothers.

“We’ve been waiting, watching, waiting.

It’s taking its toll, no doubt about it,” Gene Wicklund said of the rising Sheyenne River, which flows near Wicklund’s house south of Horace and feeds into the larger Red. Wicklund and his neighbors are “watching the Sheyenne move a section at a time, knowing that it’s going to get to them,” said Cass County Engineer Keith Berndt.

The Red River crested at Fargo and neighboring Moorhead, Minn., late last month just short of 41 feet, after an intense sandbagging effort that raised levees and helped the two cities largely escape major damage. The river’s second crest is projected to reach 38 feet to 40 feet by next weekend.

The Sheyenne is the Red River’s scenic tributary. It begins in the center of North Dakota and meanders east and south before taking a final loop north into the Red, which follows a northerly course along the Minnesota-North Dakota line.

“It moves pretty slow,” said Kent Ness, who also lives south of Horace. “But it’s going at a pretty good clip right now.”

County officials have called in the Coast Guard to help prepare for potential emergency evacuations, possibly using air boats or helicopters, Cass County Sheriff Paul Laney said.

“That pretty much says what we believe,” Laney said.

On Saturday, officials started evacuating the North Dakota Veterans Home near the Sheyenne River in the town of Lisbon.

Administrator Mark Johnson said it might be a first for the 117-year-old Veterans Home. It’s protected by sandbags and a dike, but a bridge to the home is at a low spot along the Sheyenne and could be blocked by high water.

“What we’ve been told is that the Sheyenne is going to be the worst we’ve ever

seen it,” Laney said. “We can’t take that lightly. When it comes to overland flooding, it cuts off a lot of things.”

Flooding is a worry along rivers and creeks throughout North Dakota, with sandbagging construction or patrols during the weekend from Burlington in the northwest to Lisbon in the southeast. The National Weather Service issued a flood warning Sunday for counties in western and central North Dakota and said major flooding was expected in places along the Souris River, which loops through Minot in north-central Dakota.

On Saturday, soldiers hauled floodwalls and sandbags from Fargo to Minot. About 900 National Guard soldiers were on duty and more are on alert in case they’re needed.

The weather service also said the Sheyenne is expected to rise to 22 feet in Valley City, about 60 miles from Fargo, by Tuesday, or 2 feet higher than the record 20 feet set in 1882. All but one of Valley City’s 11 bridges will be closed if that happens, officials say.

They worry that rising water will spread quickly over the flat valley, flooding roads and homes.

Most residents of Horace, about 10 miles outside Fargo, and suburban West Fargo are protected from the Sheyenne by a diversion canal that routes water outside the city during floods.

“God bless the diversion,” said West Fargo resident Jeff Simmons, who spent several days clearing ice jams at bridges over the Sheyenne.

The rest of the county has to deal with flooding from the Sheyenne as well as the Wild Rice and Maple rivers, Laney said.

“I think people realize it’s here, and we’ve got to get things going,” Laney said of the approaching crest. “We take the threat very seriously because we have no choice.”

Wicklund and Ness have both recruited volunteers to help them build sandbag dikes.

Jeff Sherva, who was filling bags for Wicklund, said he had his boat ready.

“We’ve been doing this for almost three weeks: Watching everything else,” he said.

“Not too much was said about the Sheyenne at first, but we knew we were going to be in trouble.”

primary threat to the orangutan, a species of great ape known for its keen intelligence and the fact that it’s the largest animal to live primarily in trees. A 2007 assessment by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) predicts that orangutans will be virtually eliminated in the wild within two decades if current deforestation trends continue. The great reddish-brown apes are native to the tropical rainforests of Indonesia and Malaysia, which are being cut down rapidly (and in many cases, illegally) to make way for agriculture and other development.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies the Bornean sub-species of orangutan as Endangered and the Sumatran sub-species as Critically Endangered. The non-profit Orangutan Conservancy estimates that 54,000 Bornean orangutans and only 6,600 Sumatran orangutans remain in the wild.

Given that it’s rare for adult orangutans, supremely adapted to life in trees, to ever touch the ground; it’s no wonder that forest degradation, fragmentation and outright clearing — sometimes by intentionally set fires — are the main drivers of the species’ population decline. The result has been the loss of some 80 percent of the orangutans’ habitat in just the last two decades.

While small independent farmers are cutting down rainforest swaths to plant their crops, an even larger problem is the spread of large oil palm plantations — in some cases funded by supposedly forward-thinking international development banks — that stretch for hundreds of thousands of acres

across formerly diverse rainforest. The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) reports that over the last four decades, the total land area planted with oil palm in Indonesia has grown some 30-fold to over three million hectares, while in Malaysia, oil palm agriculture has increased 12-fold to 3.5 million hectares.

Orangutans are also killed for the illegal wildlife trade. Poachers kill the mothers and then sell their babies as pets. According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), there may be more (pet) orangutans per square-mile in Taipei, Taiwan than in the wild.

Unfortunately for the often unwitting owners, orangutans quickly grow out of being cuddly and can, like any wild animal, become unmanageable and unruly when confined.

Poachers are also killing orangutans for food for the so-called bush meat trade.

According to the Orangutan Conservancy, the fact that many Indonesian logging companies do not provide food for their workers exacerbates this problem. “Hundreds of loggers are employed to cut down a particular area of forest, and they have to find food for themselves,” says the Conservancy. “The loggers, along with settlers who establish communities in the forest, hunt orangs, birds, and small mammals the orangs eat.”

The group pins the blame on economic pressures along with human greed and ignorance.

“The needs of so many people with little landmass are pressingly urgent, allowing little time for planning or care about the environment.”

With a granola bar and kind words, Hooks helps the homeless FROM CP PAGE 1 has canvassed the streets of Santa Monica, reaching out to every homeless person encountered on the daily route, asking how he can help them get off the streets, connecting them to the appropriate social service agency or in many cases, their families.

The executive director of West Coast Care has made it a mission to help the local homeless population since August of 2005 when he first came to Santa Monica on a family trip from San Francisco where he was the minister at the Providence Christian Center and oversaw an affiliated homeless services agency.

“We just didn’t expect that there would be so many homeless people here,” he said.

“Usually they’re in other areas like Skid Row.” For Hooks, the image of the homeless sleeping on the lawn in Palisades Park, fishing for coins on the Third Street Promenade, and camping out in front of businesses, was compelling enough to take action.

A year later, the Hooks family uprooted from San Francisco to the Westside and an organization dedicated to curing homelessness was born.

The organization operated on its own for the first several months, but often contacted the Santa Monica Police Department’s Homeless Liaison Program (HLP) Team when it witnessed problems such as fights.

By February the following year, Hooks had become acquainted with each person on the HLP Team, eventually hired as a contracted employee of the SMPD in March of 2008.

The SMPD established the HLP Team in 1991 to address the community’s concern regarding the homeless issue. The team today consists of six officers who not only work to enforce the law, but collaborate with different agencies to help the homeless.

“It’s like the HLP Team was maybe 90 percent law enforcement and 10 percent social services and we were 90 percent social services and 10 percent law enforcement, even though we’re not police officers,” Hooks said.

Hooks begins his mornings around 9 a.m. under the Santa Monica Pier where he embarks on a three-hour bike ride, covering areas heavily populated with homeless people, including Main Street, Venice, Palisades Park and the Third Street Promenade, carrying anywhere from 50 to 75 granola bars and talking to just less than 100 individuals a day with the help of his son, Josh.

Sometimes he’s able to make a connection right away. In other cases it take months before someone acknowledges they need help. Some have talked to Hooks for years but have yet to ask for assistance.

“The longer they’re here, the tougher it is,” Hooks said. “In our model, we are concentrating on the people who are newly

arriving because they are the easiest to engage.”

The approach has proven successful, helping more than 300 people off the streets, the majority of whom have not returned.

One of Hooks’ favorite success stories is about a man who after being homeless for two years in Santa Monica was reunited with his family in Atlanta, Ga. “He had been in Palisades Park for two years,” Hooks said. “The more we talked to him, the friendlier he got.”

He remembers calling the man’s parents, asking if it was OK for their son to return home, an idea they openly embraced.

“I started talking to him and he said. ‘I don’t know if I can do this,’’ Hooks said.

The man returned back home to live with his parents, one of whom had fallen ill.

Today he works as an attendant at a stadium in Atlanta.

Last week Hooks added another story to his list of favorites, this being about a man who was arrested on April 7 for illegally camping. Hooks and the HLP Team sent the man off in a bus the next day to be reunited with his family in Minneapolis, Minn.

Following the arrest, Hooks met with the homeless man and asked about his family, receiving just the first three digits of the mother’s phone number. A subsequent search turned up a name and phone number that matched.

two weeks to see if he can offer any services.

Another follow-up will come in about four months.

An ordained bishop with the Church of God, Hooks moved to San Francisco in 1994 from Charlotte, N.C. to start a church, opening the Providence Christian Center. It was in the Bay Area where he first became aware of the local homeless population.

During the opening day for the Providence Christian Center, Hooks hosted a church outreach function in which he offered free coffee and donuts. The church filled up with 150 homeless people, exceeding the 125-person capacity in the room.

In 1996, he started the Providence House, an affiliate of the Providence Christian Center.

Hooks said that the majority of people on the streets in Santa Monica are mentally ill or have a substance abuse problem. He hands out cards to these individuals, listing a directory of homeless service providers in the back, checking off the appropriate agency specializing in their particular issue, whether it’s Daybreak for women or CLARE for alcoholism.

He is always sure to come back and check up.

“We’ll always come back tomorrow,” he tells each person. “We’re not leaving you alone, and I mean that in a good way.” melodyh@smdp.com

AUGUSTA, Ga. They battled each other as though no one else was playing, and for many of those lucky enough to be at Augusta National on Easter Sunday, no one else was. Every shot seemed to spark a new roar echoing through the Georgia pines, and every birdie brought new hope that this might be the most magical Masters of them all.

Phil Mickelson started it, but Tiger Woods wasn’t about to let him finish it by himself.

Not with the green jacket still up for grabs. Not with Augusta National just begging to be taken.

Not with what this, the most personal of duels, meant to both men.

The record will reflect that Angel Cabrera won this Masters and the coveted green jacket that goes along with it.

But anyone watching will tell you that Tiger and Phil stole the show.

The fans who streamed out of Augusta National by the hundreds even as the leaders played the back nine certainly thought so. They could have stuck around for what eventually became the first three-way playoff in 22 years, but there didn’t seem much point after the thrills Woods and Mickelson provided.

They were the dream pairing, and they delivered more than anyone could have imagined. For the best part of four hours they gave us the kind of moments that Chad Campbell and Kenny Perry can’t deliver in their entire career.

The patrons, as they call them here, responded by screaming in joy, high-fiving one another, and acting in very unpatronlike ways. Straining to get in on the action, they even ran from hole to hole, the most taboo of all the no-nos at the Masters.

They all wanted in on this action, and who could blame them. Mickelson stoked their fire by making birdies from everywhere imaginable on the front nine, and by the time Woods rolled in an eagle putt on No. 8, the game was really on.

Behind them somewhere, Cabrera and Perry were playing in the final group and their nerves were beginning to show.

Ahead of them was a back nine filled with tantalizing possibilities of birdies, eagles, and even more.

How good was this? Just ask one of the men on the inside.

“It was the most fun I ever had on a golf course,” said Jim “Bones” Mackay, Mickelson’s longtime caddie.

The fact that there is an undercurrent of bad blood between the two men simply added to the intrigue on this gorgeous spring day. Woods’ caddie, Steve Williams, said a few months earlier that he hated Mickelson, and the two players aren’t exactly dinner companions.

But this was a day for spectacular golf, not pettiness. And while they weren’t trading jokes inside the ropes, there was some back and forth.

“Great shot,” Woods kept saying to Mickelson.

"Back to you,” Mickelson said to Woods.

Mickelson set the bar high with six birdies in a seven-hole stretch on the front nine, including a miraculous shot through the trees on No. 7 that finished in kick-in range. He tied the front nine record with a 30 and stood on the 12th tee with a 9-iron in his hand, suddenly just a stroke off the lead.

Being Mickelson, of course, he promptly hit it in the water.

Most players would have collapsed right there. But Mickelson has been in a few jams in his time, and soon the game was back on.

Both players were closing in on the lead but still desperate for more birdies. And both had great chances for eagles on the two par-5’s on the back nine, only to miss.

Mickelson’s miss on No. 15 hurt the most. After watching Woods knock it to 15 feet he stuck it to just 4 feet and had an eagle putt to take the lead.

It didn’t come close.

“I just didn’t trust the read and made a very tentative stroke,” Mickelson said. “If I had eagled 15 I’m right back in the tournament.”

The finish was anti-climatic because by then the two seemed spent. Woods bogeyed the last two holes, and Mickelson missed a short birdie on the 17th and made bogey on the final hole himself.

They would have needed 64s to get in the playoff, and Mickelson ended with a 67 and Woods a 68.

But what a blast it was while it lasted.

“The front nine was awesome. It was really fun,” Mickelson said. “It was fun to have a chance on the back nine. I think that’s what we always want as players.”

Woods usually wants a little more, and that might account for the scowl on his face as he walked out of the scoring hut off the 18th green where wife, Elin was waiting, dressed appropriately in a red sweater. He hasn’t won here in four years now, his longest drought at the Masters, and at times his frustration showed.

He hit it terrible on the driving range, and even worse on the first hole when his tee shot went way left into the ninth fairway. He was in danger of being trampled by Mickelson, being overrun by the rest of the field, and getting his ego bruised all at the same time.

But somehow he managed to come to the 17th tee with a slim chance to do the unthinkable.

“I fought my swing all day and just kind of Band-Aided around and almost won the tournament with a Band-Aid swing today,” Woods said.

Woods didn’t stick around to analyze it much further. He was finished, and in no mood to watch anyone else finish.

Mickelson lingered a little longer, getting a hug and kiss from wife Amy underneath the huge tree on the clubhouse lawn. Soon, too, he was gone, leaving only with thoughts of what might have been.

They came to win, and they came up short. Someone else would wear the green jacket.

PHOENIX The Los Angeles Dodgers had two things going for them — Randy Wolf and the trusty “four-out play.”

Wolf tossed two-hit ball into the eighth inning and drove in the Dodgers’ first run on a bizarre double play to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1 on Sunday.

Trailing 1-0 in the second, Los Angeles had Andre Ethier on third base and Juan Pierre on second with one out when Wolf hit a line drive that was caught by Arizona starter Dan Haren (0-2).

He wheeled and threw to second baseman Felipe Lopez, who tagged Pierre a few feet off second base for an inningending double play.

Ethier was running on contact, and he crossed the plate before Pierre was tagged out. The Diamondbacks left the

field, apparently thinking the run didn’t count.

But the umpires said it did after meeting with Dodgers manager Joe Torre and Arizona manager Bob Melvin — and by then it was too late for the Diamondbacks to appeal that Ethier had failed to tag up. Had they done so, they would have recorded a fourth out and erased the run.

"They could have gotten the fourth out with an appeal at third base, but they didn’t do that before leaving the field,” umpire Charlie Reliford told a pool reporter. “We had about six rules involved here.”

Torre’s bench coach, Bob Schaefer, knew the rule, and he pointed it out to Torre as the play unfolded.

“When it happened, Bob Schaefer said, ‘That’s the fourout play,’” Torre said.

Reliford said the run wouldn’t have counted if Lopez had stepped on second instead of tagging Pierre.
