Despite rain, spirits high at L.A. Marathon BY ASHLEY ARCHIBALD Daily Press Staff Writer
OCEAN AVE Thousands of runners braved pouring rain and cold temperatures to complete the 2011 L.A. Marathon in Santa Monica on Sunday, some breaking personal records despite the inclement weather. Triumphant finishers were greeted with cheers, mylar blankets and a pantry of food from some 50,000 bananas brought in for the event to fruit cups and bagels. Mayor Richard Bloom and Mayor Protem Gleam Davis assisted Marathon Chairman Frank McCourt in holding up the finish line ribbon broken by the top male and female runners. “We want to show them we’re glad they came to Santa Monica, even if it took them 26.2 miles to get here,” Davis quipped. Elite runners arrived just over the twohour mark, with Ethiopian rookie Markos Geneti cruising to a record-breaking finish at 2:06:35. Buzunesh Deba, also from Ethiopia, won the women’s division with a 2:26:34 time, and a first-time American marathon SEE WEATHER PAGE 12

Gardena man sentenced to 19 years for SM robbery BY DAILY PRESS STAFF A Gardena man who was found guilty of pistol whipping and robbing a gas station attendant in Santa Monica has been sentenced to 19 years in state prison, Santa Monica police said Sunday. Karl Lamonte Wesley, 31, was sentenced on Feb. 3. SMPD Sgt. Jay Trisler said forensics lifted fingerprints from the ARCO gas station
located in the 2000 block of Lincoln Boulevard where the robbery occurred. Detectives with the Santa Monica Police Department contacted witnesses and they positively identified Wesley. Wesley was arrested on May 20, 2010 and booked for armed robbery. Police said he went into the gas station on May 7, 2010 and pointed a gun at the cashier. He demanded money. When the cashier refused, Wesley
went behind the counter and hit the clerk with his pistol. The suspect then fled on foot with a few hundred dollars, police said. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed felony charges of robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. news@smdp.com
Geneti breaks marathon record in bad weather ASSOCIATED PRESS OCEAN AVE The only time Markos Geneti doubted himself was just before the start of the Los Angeles Marathon. The Ethiopian had never competed over the 26.2-mile distance and was up against a field of experienced Kenyans, including twotime defending champion Wesley Korir. But Geneti quickly left those doubts behind Sunday, setting a Los Angeles Marathon record by winning in 2 hours, 6 minutes, 35 seconds, the second fastest marathon in the world this year. “When I saw the course I was thinking it SEE MARATHON PAGE 13
