Schools adding up to math proficiency BY MELODY HANATANI Daily Press Staff Writer

CITY HALL The United States might have some of the best and brightest students in the world, but they could certainly use some help in math. Especially in the Golden State. In 2005, only 28 percent of California fourth graders were either advanced or proficient in mathematics, compared to 35 percent nationally. In that same year, about 22 percent of California eighth graders were rated as being advanced or proficient in math, as opposed to the national average of 30 percent, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress. In Santa Monica, things seem to be going a bit better as 73 percent of fourth graders tested at proficient or advanced levels in 2006. All in all, the elementary school kids in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District seem to be performing above average in mathematics over the past five years, there has been continual progress in every grade level from second to fifth. Despite statistics showing that more than 50 percent of elementary-aged students in the district are either proficient or advanced in math, administrators are still concerned about the progress. Statistics suggest less than 50 percent of students in the district achieve proficiency in algebra by the end of their freshmen year in high school. It’s what made the district set a goal that 100 percent of students in the ninth grade will attain proficiency in Algebra I by the end of their first year in high school. “Our issues and concerns in mathematics are not unique to Santa Monica Malibu Unified,” Maureen Bradford, director of educational services, said during the Board

of Education meeting on Thursday. “We share these concerns with other educators throughout the country.” Another of the district’s concerns will be to find more math course alternatives to offer students. The district previously mandated that starting with the class of 2007, all students complete three years of math before graduating. The district adopted the policy starting this year in order to encourage students to take more University of California and California State University course work in order to be eligible for either system. The UC and CSU schools require three years of math while four are recommended.

WE KNOW THAT ALGEBRA IS THE GATEKEEPER TO HIGHER EDUCATION." Maureen Bradford Director of educational services

The sequence of course work that both systems recommend is algebra I, geometry and algebra II. Approximately 35 percent of students in the district were in danger of failing to reach this requirement at the semester break this school year. “We know that algebra is the gatekeeper to higher education,” Bradford said. Administrators are suggesting alternative courses that students could take during their

Gabor’s husband sues Fox, O’Reilly for calling him a ‘fraud’ By the Associated Press

SM COURTHOUSE — Prince Frederic von Anhalt has sued Fox and Bill O’Reilly after the talk-show host called him a fraud for claiming he could be the father of Anna Nicole Smith’s baby. Von Anhalt, who is married to Zsa Zsa Gabor, filed the defamation lawsuit seeking

at least $10 million in damages Wednesday at the Santa Monica Courthouse. The claim stems from comments the talk-show host made during a Feb. 22 segment of “The O’Reilly Factor.” “Look, this guy’s a fraud,” O’Reilly said, according to a transcript of the show posted on the network’s Web site. “We know he’s a fraud. Fox News spokeswoman Dana Klinghoffer said Thursday that Fox, a division of News. Corp., had not received the lawsuit yet and therefore could not comment on it. Last month, von Anhalt filed legal documents seeking a DNA test to determine if he is the father of Smith’s baby girl, Dannielynn. He has said he carried on a decade-long affair with the Playmate.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

PUBLISHER

My Write

Footing affordable housing bill Editor:

(Re: “Rents just keep on rising in this town,” March 12, page 1) For the sake of argument I will accept all the assumptions made by Mr. Herrera in his article. According to Mr. Herrera, rent control provides the City of Santa Monica with many important benefits. The article states that “rent control is a serious crisis that will dramatically affect life decisions” and “is a big issue because of the loss of economic diversity.” Santa Monica greatly benefits by having a wide range of people with different economic, political and social life styles living in our City. Now since we all agree on the vital importance of diversity, and we all agree that rent control is a positive tool in guarantying this diversity, then why are we the people and why is the City of Santa Monica so willing to put this tremendous responsibility on the backs of a relatively few number of people? It’s time for the City and the people of Santa Monica to step up to the plate and put their tax dollars where their mouths are. It’s time for a City-wide tax to subsidize affordable rental housing. We all benefit and we all should shoulder the burden. This seems like the only practicable, fair and sustainable long-term solution. By the way, I’m paying a lot more for a loaf of bread these days, but thank goodness those who need assistance in purchasing groceries don’t have to rely on the store owners to lower their prices, but have the benefits of food stamps paid for by our tax dollars. Lets do the same for Santa Monica renters.

Jack L. Allen Santa Monica

British monarch soup Editor:

I see much reference lately to Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Elizabeth II in the media recently due to movies about them , I think. The references often do not say which country she was queen of. They were queens of different countries. Firstly of England and secondly of the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom was formed in 1603 from the Kingdom of Scotland, the Kingdom of England, the Principality of Wales and Ireland. They were united under a single monarch, King James VI of Scotland. It was agreed that since there had never been a King James of England it would make no sense to call him King James VI of Great Britain and so he became King James I of Great Britain. On the same principle there has never been a queen Elizabeth of Scotland and so the present queen is Queen Elizabeth I of Great Britain. This was a great controversy in 1952 when she became queen. Many Scots were insulted by the arrogant English calling her Queen Elizabeth II when she quite plainly was not. Great fun was had in Scotland blowing up mail boxes with “E II R” on them. From a Scottish point of view, the rightful royal family was the Stuarts (Bonnie Prince Charlie) but the English refused to have him on the throne even though he was most directly in line. But he was a Catholic and the English wanted a Protestant and so they wandered along the family tree till they found a very obscure member in Europe. They took princes from Holland and Saxe-Coburg Gotha in Germany and stuck them on the throne. That gave them a line of German speaking King Georges, the third of whom was mad and lost the American Colonies. The name of the British royal family was Battenberg until WWI when it was an embarrassment to be too German and was changed to Windsor. As a result of the continual use of foreign princes, it was not until Princess Elizabeth (later QEI of G.B.) was born that an heir to the throne in the house of Windsor had as much as 50 percent British blood (because her mother was Scottish). So the present queen of GB is erroneously titled . She is not queen of England since there is no such Kingdom and only a fraction of her blood is English. I don’t suppose they mentioned that in the movies.

Campaign reform for all candidates IN ORDER TO COUNTER INDEPENDENT

“big money” influence on local elections, the City Council recently debated a staff recommendation that would grant council candidates — who meet minimum qualifications — up to $100,-000 in taxpayer money to “level the playing field.” Never mind that this will have no effect on the amount independent Political Action Committees spend — which is made possible by the Constitution. One issue on the table has to do with “equalizing” lavish campaign expenditures by outside interests. For example: Last year, Edward Thomas Management Company, the Beverly Hills based owner of Casa Del Mar and Shutters of the Beach, spent more than $500,000 through a PAC created out of a phony citizen issues group. Their PAC supported two City Council candidates and attacked a third. However, big spending hotels and special interests aren’t the only parties guilty of “shabby tricks” that need reforming. Last Fall, the “Friends of Safe and Clean Santa Monica Beaches -- Yes on Proposition V" hired Santa Monica for Renters’ Rights Co-Chair, Denny Zane, to advise their ballot proposal that would implement a new “property” tax to fund projects to curb stormwater pollution of Santa Monica Bay. According to disclosure statements posted online by the City Clerk’s office, Zane’s political consultancy, Urban Dimensions, was paid $10,000 for services to “V” — not counting any commissions earned on media or referrals. Zane was a former Councilman and mayor during the 1980s and early 1990s. Today, he still wields substantial political clout and makes a living consulting on local campaigns. His clients include Santa Monica College among others. Previous clients included 41st Assembly candidate, Julia Brownley and a variety of local organizations promoting various public school parcel taxes and school and college construction bond proposals. Zane wins campaigns for his clients because, as SMRR co-chair, he can influence the powerful renter organization to endorse his client and/or causes. SMRR’s endorsements carry a lot of weight with voters. Nowhere in campaign mailers is it disclosed that the SMRR co-chair has a vested interest in certain measures or campaigns being endorsed — let alone that SMRR-supported revenue measures (if approved) almost always lead to tax and rent increases. I pay about $25 to $30 in charges added onto my monthly rent because of Zane-backed, SMRRendorsed proposals approved by voters. Parcel taxes and bond expense are passed onto tenants by landlords with the permission of the SMRR-laden Rent Control Board. Behind the scenes politicking often involves getting landlords to “buy into” a measure well before the election. Landlords are “unofficially” informed that the RCB will allow a pass-along of tax expense to tenants if the measure wins — months ahead of an official RCB vote. This may lead some to ask:

“Who influences the RCB?” It is plain to see that SMRR and Zane are pulling the strings. It’s like a restaurateur writing food reviews for the local newspaper and praising his own eatery. It may not be illegal but it’s unethical and it stinks. If Zane wants to make a living pedaling his political prowess to local campaigns, he should resign as SMRR co-chair. I’ll also be watching to see if the water pollution and environmental engineering and construction firms — from as far away as Colorado — who contributed tens of thousands of dollars to “Yes on V" are hired when actual wastewater mitigation work begins. All sorts of outside interests pony up money to promote candidates or measures they can profit from — and we often pay for it. This practice needs to be outlawed or be subject to full disclosure before election day.

According to year-end disclosure reports, ETMC “loaned” $45,000 to “Yes on V.” So while “V’s” consultant, Zane made cozy with hotel management supporting his client’s measure, some of these very same hotels were blowing $100,000-plus on a smear campaign targeting SMRR’s council candidate, Kevin McKeown. The only way voters can find out about any of this is by wading through hundreds of pages of disclosures posted online — months after the election! Grand giveaways of money to candidates is a stupid idea and a huge waste of money. Here’s what needs to be done: (1) Require full disclosure of PAC and independent committee memberships — and in a timely manner. (2) Prohibit last minute donations within 48 hours of an election to allow time for reporting. (3) Implement term limits. And last but not least, Santa Monica’s news media must be much more vigilant. What do you think?

Commentary Visit us online at smdp.com

Guest Commentary

weeks ago, President Bush repeated a comment that was made to him by an unnamed Congressman, who told him that the President’s upcoming Iraq speech “had better be eloquent.” Our President’s reply made it clear that he didn’t think he had to be eloquent, or even adequate, that all that mattered was what happened on the ground. There’s no question that Mr. Bush has been wrong on many things before, but on this point, he is so far off the mark that it’s absurd. We’re the country of great orators, from Ronald Reagan to JFK to FDR to Abraham Lincoln to Thomas Jefferson and just about every last one of our founding fathers. How did we ever get to this point? Is it because all our latest generation of campaign politicos have grown up with the idea that we need to make our leaders seem like the guy next door? Frankly, the guy next door isn’t good enough. We need someone better. Which is why it is beyond comprehension that two U.S. Senators, Charles (sorry, “Chuck") Shumer and Dick Durbin, both with their eye on the White House in 2008, would allow ABC World News to come into their “Animal House" — a two-bedroom townhouse near the Capitol that they share with two other Congressmen. While the rest of us decent people would have called a maid service or worked for days preparing our homes for a national TV appearance, these four clowns didn’t bother to pick up old beer bottles, pizza boxes or even their dirty underwear! And they want us to seriously consider them to be the next President of the United States? You have to be kidding! Have we as a country entirely lost our way? Or is it simply that our “leaders” have completely forgotten what leadership looks like? Our president certainly doesn’t know what it looks like, or how to do it, or even realize how important it is. Now we’ve learned that Senators like Durbin and Shumer don’t understand it either, as they remain oblivious as to how many followers (i.e. votes) they lost because of their slovenliness. Just because a camera can come into their private lives doesn’t mean it should. We deserve better than this!

Yet we all do recognize a leader when we see one. He or she is always the one in charge, the one with the plan, the ideas, the inspirational presentation that gets people first to agree, then to get off their duffs and go out and help make it happen. Yet here we are, a country with 300 million people, with a President who doesn’t have the first idea that leadership is all about appearing like a leader, who instead stutters and ums and uhs his way indecisively through every press conference, convinced he has no need to look like a President or act like a President, because he already has claim to the position. We have senior Senators who aspire to be President who don’t even know that inviting cameras into their “grown-up” frat houses diminishes them, because it not only makes them seem less like the austere, wise Senators we expect them to be, it actually makes them seem like less than men, mere boys who can’t run a household as well as the worst housewife. How could we have been so foolish as to charge them with the responsibility of running our country as Senators, much less consider them as a possible Presidential contender? It’s a simple fact: When a leader appears vulnerable or incompetent in the eyes of his followers, that leader ceases to be a leader. Were it not for the Constitutionally-designated term of office for a President which we Americans all respect, that time would have already arrived in fact, as it already has in perception as well as reality. We are now simply waiting impatiently to see who his successor will be. Selecting a new President during this very long 2008 political cycle will be easy, and we’ll see it coming from a long way off. That’s because the first candidate that looks like a President, behaves like a President, and talks to us like he or she is already President will win this election, period. If NO candidate is able to achieve the appearance of true leadership, as recent history suggests is quite possible and perhaps even likely, then it will be a long political season indeed. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO “Know before you Go” is a weekly update on construction projects throughout Santa Monica. Here is a run-down of this week’s construction projects initiated by City Hall

Access Center Construction

Residents, builders clash over access to wilderness locations

Construction of a new two-story homeless services facility begins at 503 Olympic Blvd. for the new Access Center building. The sidewalk on Olympic Boulevard between Fifth and Seventh streets will be closed to the public, except Samoshel residents.

Airport Park and Airport Avenue improvements

Civic Center parking structure Construction continues on a new 900-space Civic Center Public Parking Structure, located on Fourth Street next to the Public Safety Facility. Construction will require the closure of Avenida Mazatlan and the Fourth Street sidewalk. One lane on southbound Fourth Street is subject to closure while work is occurring.

Euclid Park Project Construction of a new public park. The project scope will consist of site grading and construction of a new play area (with swings and climbing apparatus), a new garden area, two small green lawn areas, three circular-shaped seating areas and a trellis entry. Construction is projected until May 2007.

Lantana East Relocation of an 18” storm drain will require street closure on westbound lane #2 of Olympic Boulevard, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Relocation work will continue to April 2, 2007.

Montana/Wilshire Storm Water Diversion Structures Installation of a Storm Water Diversion debris removal and diversion facility will begin Aug. 7 at Ocean Avenue at Montana Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard. Traffic will narrow to one lane in each direction on Ocean Avenue at Montana Avenue.

BEAVER, Utah — Developers hoping to build a multibillion-dollar resort here have riled some residents by posting no-trespassing signs on roads leading to several lakes just before a county meeting on the project. Some in Beaver County are looking forward to the ritzy Mount Holly Club for its economic boon, while others have concerns over public access and snobbish attitudes. “It’s all Hollywood money, and we don’t need them coming in here with their Hollywood drugs and pornography,” said resident Margaret Wellman. But not everyone in this southeastern Utah community opposes Salt Lake City developer CPB’s plan to redevelop the nowdefunct Elk Meadows ski resort with extravagant homes and a posh club. “Our elementary school here is in real trouble,” said Scott Robinson, who owns Beaver Drug in Beaver.“We need a new school and more teachers. So if the environmental concerns are addressed and laws and ordinances are followed, then I look at the project as something that could benefit the county.” Either way, the proposed resort is the talk of this county of 6,400 people. “It’s the biggest issue in the county that I

can remember,” Robinson said. The issue is expected to draw a crowd Wednesday night, when the county Planning Commission considers zoning changes and a development agreement for the $3.5 billion project. The gated ski resort community would include 1,200 houses and town houses along with a 250,000-square-foot clubhouse to be built on 2,000 acres. The club also would include a private ski resort with 36 runs and an 18-hole private golf course. The project is expected to take 10 years to complete. Among residents’ chief concerns are water rights and public access to areas like Puffer Lake. The group bought land near the lake to add to the ski area and recently notrespassing signs were posted on roads leading to that lake and several others. At least two of the signs have been removed and Bill Quick, a spokesman for Mount Holly, blames the markers on an overzealous employee. Terry Krasco, head ranger at the Fishlake National Forest office in Beaver, explained that the agency has decades-old easements for roads that cross the private land now owned by Mount Holly and lead to public areas. Krasco would not comment about the signs other than to say the Forest Service “plans to assert our rights of way.” Quick maintains that the developers are committed to adhering to the approval process and building public trust. “It’s important that we do this right,” Quick said. “There is nothing secretive about what we are doing. We want to be forthright.”

Ultimate wolf fighting causes deaths By the Associated Press

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. Fighting over food and territory was the leading cause of death for radio-collared wolves in the park last year, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Nine collared wolves died last year. Of those, four died in fights. Meanwhile, competition between packs likely accounted for most pup deaths in the Slough Creek and Hellroaring Creek packs, two of three packs that didn’t reproduce successfully, according to the Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery 2006 Interagency Annual Report. The fighting has not harmed wolf numbers, though. The number of wolves in Yellowstone increased 15 percent last year after a disease-caused decline in 2005. Last year, 136 wolves in 13 packs lived in Yellowstone, numbers the report said could have been larger. “Based on prey biomass available, there

should have been more wolves, but there were not,” the report said. “Something else was limiting their numbers and we believe it to be wolf-wolf related mortality and dispersal.” Biologists documented conflicts between several packs. “These kingdoms are like early human tribes,” said Ed Bangs, U.S. Fish and Wildlife wolf recovery coordinator. “They have fixed boundaries but they take space from each other now and then. They have little wars with each other and they eliminate other packs. It’s a constant shuffle for space and prey.” One cause of that shuffle, biologists say, is a 50 percent decline in the elk population. That created problems for wolves in northern Yellowstone in particular. Wolves in the middle of Yellowstone fought less. “Packs in the park interior are much more stable and occur at lower density without the level of conflict observed on the northern range,” the report said.

Filipino WWII vets separated from families BY AUDREY MCAVOY Associated Press Writer

WAIANAE, Hawaii Manuel S. Pablo crouched in foxholes to defend the Philippines against invading Japanese soldiers in World War II. He watched a Japanese guard stab one of his comrades to death with a bayonet during the Bataan Death March when the starving prisoner of war dared to ask for another bowl of rice. Even though Pablo risked his life for the United States, which controlled the Philippines as a commonwealth at the time, his children can’t win approval to live with him in America during his retirement.

Scholars and veteran advocates say the policy reflects decades of neglect, dating to 1946 when Washington broke wartime promises the soldiers could become U.S. citizens and enjoy the same pension and medical benefits as American troops. The federal government has since belatedly fulfilled those commitments, but only in the past two decades and only in fits and starts. And some issues remain unresolved, like resident rights for the children of veterans. Today, thousands of elderly veterans — including those wounded in battle and awarded the Bronze Star and other medals — are forced to live their last years far from the warm touch of their children and grandchildren.

forces surrendered at Bataan and Gen. Douglas MacArthur, withdrew to Australia uttering the famous phrase “I shall return.” Belinda Aquino, a University of Hawaii political science professor, said the U.S. “dumped” Filipinos veterans after World War II. Their cause then struggled in the postwar years as the U.S. focused on fighting communism. “The Philippines was just not an important priority for the U.S.,” she said. It took Washington 45 years after the war to offer veterans a proper chance to obtain citizenship. Yet the Immigration Act of 1990 only allowed each veteran to bring one immediate family member to America.

“I feel lonely whenever I think about them,” Pablo, 88, said during an interview on the wooden porch of his home in Waianae. “If only they were here.” Pablo enlisted in the Philippine Scouts, a U.S. Army unit, after a recruiting truck drove through his hometown of San Nicolas in Ilocos Norte province. When the Imperial Japanese Army invaded on Dec. 8, 1941, he and his fellow soldiers dug foxholes to fight against troops shooting at them from the jungle. He recalls hunkering down between the corpses of fallen comrades, using their bodies to shield himself from bullets. Other Filipinos formed the resistance against Japanese troops after U.S.

Mammoth Mountain operations kind to environment BY TOM GARDNER Associated Press Writer

STATELINE, Nev. Mammoth Mountain urges its visitors to park their cars and take advantage of an extensive bus network. The Vail resorts, including nearby Heavenly at Lake Tahoe, run their lifts with wind power. In Colorado, the Sunshine Express high-speed quad at Steamboat operates on sunlight. The ski industry is going green to help offset the pollu-

tion that feeds global warming — a phenomenon that challenges the resorts’ very existence with the threat of later snowfalls and earlier snow melts. Fifty-five resorts in 14 states are buying renewable energy to offset part or all of their power needs, according to the National Ski Areas Association. Of these, 26 are operating 100 percent on green energy. “We as a company and us as an industry are really kind of leading the way amongst corporate America in doing the right things for the environment,” Vail Resorts CEO Rob Katz said.

Vail Resorts took the environmental lead in August with the purchase of nearly 152,000 megawatt hours of wind energy, making it the second largest corporate user in the United States, behind Whole Foods Market Inc. Wind powers every lift and light bulb (low energy) at Vail’s five resorts — Vail, Beaver Creek, Arrowhead and Keystone in Colorado and Heavenly in the Sierra on the California-Nevada line. Vail trumped its own environmental card earlier this month with the announcement of plans for Ever Vail, one of the largest green projects at a North American ski resort.

Idaho may soon be known for pawpaws BY ALICIA P.Q. WITTMEYER Associated Press Writer

PARMA, Idaho Idaho: home of the worldfamous Russet potato. Soon to be joined by persimmons, pistachios, pawpaws, quinces, and mulberries, if Esmaeil Fallahi has his way. Fallahi, a University of Idaho professor who works at the school’s research center in Parma, has been the state’s fruit guru for almost 20 years, working on everything from improving apple irrigation to finding the best way to thin a plum tree. Now, Fallahi wants to give the agriculture industry in a state best known for its pedestrian potatoes, onions and sugar beets, well, a little more sex appeal.

Fallahi’s lab is researching “alternative fruits” — those that traditionally haven’t been grown in a region — that might have potential in Idaho. They could be as simple as a Fuji apple, where the traditional crop might be red delicious, or as exotic as a jujubi, a medicinal plant that grows in India, Pakistan and Fallahi’s native Iran. “Bring in a mulberry. Label it a ‘Black Persian Mulberry.’ People go crazy!” he said. “There is a huge urge for new things, for trying new tastes — a curiosity and urge for something different.” Fallahi’s hoping these fruits can grow into big bucks for Idaho farmers. Fallahi grew up on a 1,000-acre fruit farm in Iran, and when he arrived, he was immediately struck by the similarities between the

industry in Idaho, and are growing by leaps and bounds — the head of the Idaho Table Grape Association expects them expand into a $20 million industry within a few years. As his first projects have begun to take off, Fallahi is starting to branch out farther. He’s eyeing Asian pears as the next table grape, and then, he hopes, persimmons will have their day in the sun. “We’re not going to go citrus or dates here. We’re not that extreme,” he said. “But we like to experiment.” The state Department of Agriculture doesn’t track how many farmers are growing alternative crops, but even if they did, they’re being grown on such a small scale right now that they wouldn’t account for much, department officials say.

growing conditions in Iran and Idaho. People don’t realize it, he said, but most of Iran is less Middle Eastern desert than it is mountainous farmland. The mountains, the soil and water acidity, the climate in Idaho — they all reminded him of home. Idaho’s warm days and cool nights work to concentrate the flavor in fruits, making it a prime place to experiment with crops. So, Fallahi thought, why not try to grow the same fruits here? He started working in the early 1990s with different varieties of fruits already grown in Idaho, such as pluots — a halfbreed of traditional plums and apricots — doughnut peaches, and table grapes instead of wine grapes. Table grapes are about a $3 million

Alaska town decides to give away property to boost numbers BY RACHEL D’ORO Associated Press Writer

ANCHORAGE, Alaska A tiny town in Alaska’s interior has no gas station, no grocery store or traffic lights, but it does have plenty of woodsy land — and it’s free to folks willing to put down roots there. The community of Anderson, population 300, is offering 26 large lots on spruce-covered land beneath the Alaska pathway of the famed aurora borealis and just a short walk from spectacular views of Mount McKinley, North America’s tallest mountain. And what’s an occasional day of 60-below weather in a town removed from big-city ills? “It’s Mayberry,” said local high-school teacher Daryl

Frisbie, whose social studies class came up with the idea for a project exploring ways to boost the town’s dwindling population. Students developed a Web site and power point presentation, then persuaded the Anderson City Council to give it a go. “Are you tired of the hustle and bustle of the Lower 48, crime, poor schools, and the high cost of living?” the Web site asks. “Make your new home in the Last Frontier!” The general rules: The 1.3-acre lots will be awarded to the first people who apply for them and submit $500 refundable deposits beginning at 9 a.m. Monday. Each winning applicant must build a house measuring at least 1,000 square feet within two years. Power and phone hook ups are already available. City Clerk Nancy Hollis said best shots at the offer will go

to people who apply in person or have someone stand in for them. The post office doesn’t open until noon and deliveries are even later from the regional urban hub of Fairbanks, 75 miles to the northeast. City phones are ringing nonstop over the deal despite only local publicity. People seeking more information are calling mostly from Alaska, but Hollis also has heard from people in California, Texas, Idaho and Florida. “We expect people to camp out here Sunday night,” she said. Locals eyeing the sites include 15-year-old newcomer Brittney Warner, a student who worked on the project. The 10th grader, her parents and three siblings moved to Anderson two months ago from Boise, Idaho, when her father got a job at nearby Clear Air Force Station.

B OB G ABRIEL I NSURANCE Providing Professional & Personalized Service Since 1936

BY TANYA BRICKING LEACH Associated Press Food Writer

Jeanne Price has learned to love the wildy invasive kudzu vines that blanket so much of the South. That’s because the honeybees she keeps at a Bostic, N.C., farm can’t resist the sweet purple kudzu blooms that fill the air with an aroma similar to that of grape Kool-Aid each August. And Price can’t resist the delicately perfumed honey they make from those blossoms, harvesting 50 gallons of it a season. Of course, that honey comes with a price. “It’s not my favorite plant,” Price says of kudzu. “If I don’t check my bees for a week, it will cover the hives.” Called by some the “vine that ate the South,” kudzu is the bane of the South, covering more than 7 million acres from the Carolinas to Texas and costing $500 million a year to control. And not all that successfully, at that. But some people don’t fight kudzu. They eat it. “It is perfectly valid as a food source,” says Regina Hines, a fiber artist in Ball Ground, Ga. “In the springtime, I like to gather the little shoots, and I will saute

them with onions and mushrooms. They taste almost like snow peas.” Related to peas, the climbing perennial was introduced to the South during the 1930s, when the government hired workers to plant it for erosion control. The government paid farmers as much as $8 an acre to plant fields of the vine. But when the vine began to smother their crops, farmers balked. Soon, the vines were choking 100-foot-tall trees, pulling down telephone poles, clogging train tracks and covering parked cars. Since 1953, when the government removed kudzu from its list of recommended cover crops, landowners and scientists have struggled to control it. But kudzu can take years to successfully treat with herbicide. Its roots can run 10 feet deep. Appalled by how much the government spends fighting kudzu, Juanitta Baldwin, who wrote the cookbook “Kudzu Cuisine,” started looking for culinary solutions to the problem about 10 years ago after leaving a civilian Navy job. “Kudzu is a hidden goldmine,” says Baldwin, whose book includes innovative recipes for kudzu, including breads and jellies. “I think someday somebody will get rich from it.”

SANTA ROSA — Women buy much of the wine purchased in the United States, and they make quite a bit of it too. But it’s mostly male critics who proclaim what’s prime and what’s plonk. Enter the National Women’s Wine Competition being held this month in Northern California. The event, judged entirely by women, boldly sports the slogan “Wine Women Want.” There’s even a separate category of entries from women winemakers to add an extra fillip of vintage suffrage. The competition runs March 13-15 in Santa Rosa, and interest in being a singlegender contender has been keen. Wineries from across the country responded and about 1,800 entries have come in, more than double expectations. “We seem to have hit a nerve,” said organizer Lea Pierce. Having an all-woman panel is a departure for the wine industry, where judging remains largely a man’s world, something Pierce and others attribute more to slowly changing trends in the wine industry than overt discrimination. Organizers believe this is the first contest judged by an all-woman panel in the United States. An international competition to be judged by women is planned in April in Monaco. “Women want to be recognized. They want to have their own venue,” said Pierce. “I do think it’s very important, long-term, to raise up a new set of women critics.” The competition began as a “bolt from the blue,” during a conversation about wine contests in general a few years ago, said Pierce, co-owner of an advertising agency and member of a networking group called Women for WineSense. “At that point, I’d been in the wine industry for a couple of years, I was really aware of how many women are involved in wine and how it was growing. It was just sort of this insight that it would be a good thing to showcase women,” she said.

Months of organizing followed. “The phone calls have just been fabulous,” said Pierce. “Big wineries, little wineries. One woman called, she said, ‘I’m so psyched about this. My mom has been making wines for 30 years and it’s about time she got some recognition."’ Co-chairs of the competition are Margrit Mondavi, a longtime force in wine country and wife of pioneering vintner Robert Mondavi, and Kathryn Hall, a former ambassador to Austria and a Napa Valley vintner. Contestants include Marcia Monahan, winemaker at Pelton House, a new winery in the Knight’s Valley region of Sonoma County. She’s entering a 2004 cabernet sauvignon and 2004 merlot in three categories, including the women winemaker’s challenge division. “It’s fabulous that women are getting together to evaluate and judge wine,” she said. Is there a difference between male and female palates? Linda Bisson, a professor in the wine department of the University of California, Davis, hasn’t seen much of a gender gap in her years of teaching, although she liked the idea of bringing more women to the judging table. Leslie Sbrocco, author of “Wine for Women,” doesn’t think there’s a “male” or “female” palate, but that doesn’t mean there’s no distinction. “It’s not about the female palate being different. It’s about the female perspective being different,” said Sbrocco. Wilfred Wong, cellar master for Beverages & More, a California retail liquor chain, remembers when wine contests were the province of “codgers and good old boys.” That started to change in the ‘90s with the judging becoming much more competitive and the emphasis shifting to using professionals, including some of the increasing numbers of women making and critiquing wine, he said. Women want to be recognized, said Pierce. And, she added, “people want to know what wine women want. Especially men.”

COMMUNITYPROFILES RALPH SALTSMAN & STEPHEN SOLOMAN

Local legal duo dispenses free advice on the air FROM CP PAGE 1 knows, viewers may just be able to learn a thing or two that can potentially get them out of a sticky legal situation. “There’s some place to put in a little humor,” Solomon said. “We’re not ‘House.’ We’re not ‘American Idol,’ but we fill a big void.” Solomon and Saltsman represent opposite ends of the political spectrum and aren’t afraid to voice their opinions, a dynamic that is a real crowd pleaser. “As we discuss things from our opposing perspectives, it’s like a fireworks show,” said Saltsman, who has worked as partners with Solomon for 30 years. CALLER-DRIVEN

The show broadcasts to a potential audience of over 1 million people, but on any given Wednesday 10,000 to 20,000 viewers might actually tune in after watching “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” The audience is as diverse as Los Angeles, with viewers ranging from teenagers to millionaires to the unemployed. Viewers who aren’t in the market to pay hundreds of dollars per hour for a lawyer can call in for free practical advice. Legal assistance at a better price just doesn’t exist.

SOMETIMES WE POINT THEM IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION AND GIVE THEM A BOOT.” Stephen Jamieson lawyer, ‘Legal Help Live’ host

The show provides a place where anyone can pose a legal-related question — no matter what the topic. Callers will ask about everything from landlord-tenant issues and serious felony arrests to child support and worker’s compensation cases. “Because the shows are caller-driven, the callers direct which take the show has, and generally it will twist and turn,” Saltsman said. “It’s very exciting switching gears that fast.” Certain calls stand out in the hosts’ memories and sometimes forced them to struggle to keep a straight face. An employee at a vegetarian restaurant called a couple or years ago to find out if it

was discrimination for her restaurant to add chicken sandwiches to the menu. Presumably, the chicken does come before the egg at this eatery. In another memorable instance, a man called “Legal Help Live” just after being busted for having cocaine all over his face. Apparently he phoned in to inquire if the cops had a case against him considering the fact that he hadn’t called them to begin with. It seemed that his initial call for help went to the Fire Department and didn’t appreciate the fact that police officers horned in on the action without his invitation. Attacks by cute, fuzzy animals aren’t usually grounds for litigation, but apparently one caller seemed to think so. A minor league baseball pitcher, traumatized by such an attack, wanted to know if he could sue a golf course because a squirrel had bitten his hand while he was playing, and now he couldn’t throw. Self incrimination seemingly knows no candor either. A shop-a-holic once called in and admitted that she had written $1,000 in bad checks and didn’t seem to understand the right to remain silent. Another caller wanted to sue the Italian government because if the Roman Empire hadn’t fallen and set science back 1,000 years, there would be a cure for his diabetes by now. Aside from the occasional wackiness, the show sometimes takes a turn toward serious social issues as well. Topics as diverse as Walmart expansion and building a rapid transit line along Exposition Boulevard help steer the show back into the realm of standard-issue help seeking. “Sometimes we point them in the right direction and give them a boot,” said Stephen Jamieson, who occasionally fills in as host. “Most of the people that call in are frustrated but are not able to get answers in their everyday life. They get their questions answered, and they go away happy.” Most of the callers are just plain frustrated with their circumstances. “Some people are really stuck in the system, and you help them untangle,” said Robin Green-Parkinson, associate producer of “Legal Help Live.” During a recent show, Solomon and Jamieson suggested that callers join a homeowner’s association, call the city’s rent control board, look up building permits online, change lawyers if they’re uncomfortable, visit the State Bar of California Web site, testify in front of the City Council and check out the rapid transit in Pasadena. TO THE RESCUE: Stephen Soloman and Ralph Saltsman co-host “Legal Help Live.”

eagles seemingly know no bounds. Jamieson said pro-bono is the best way possible to help people because they can reach thousands of people per week doing something enjoyable. “Most people who call don’t have access to a lawyer,” Solomon said. “Number one, they’re going to charge them and, number two, they don’t know who to call.” THE SHOW

A call screener sat in an unseen booth monitoring the six listener call-in lines. A man crouched in front of the gallery sits just out of view of the cameras to cue the hosts when to address the on-air callers. Producers, directors and floor managers worked quickly on their feet, taking care of behind-the-camera logistics. Jamieson and Solomon added finishing touches to their stage makeup before silently sitting down on-set at a table surrounded by books in the City Hall council chambers. “We don’t talk to each other before we walk in so it’s fresh,” Solomon said. Each host prepares an hour’s worth of legal-related current event discussion material in case the phone lines stop ringing. During a recent broadcast, for instance, Solomon commented on the I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby

trial in his opening segment. While he spends several hours researching material that he often doesn’t have time to discuss on air, Saltsman said the intriguing nature of the subjects touched on keeps him from feeling drained. “Legal Help Live” airs on Channel 16 in Santa Monica and Channel 36 in Los Angeles every Wednesday from 4 to 5 p.m. Repeats also air daily at 4 p.m. in Santa Monica and on Thursdays from noon to 1 p.m. in Los Angeles. The show ran for five years on radio based out of Glendale and has appeared on television for the past two years with an overlap year of both radio and television broadcasting in between. “In seven years, we’ve never had anybody complain. They appreciate it,” Jamieson said. When a caller stumps the hosts with a question, they invite him to call on the 24hour phone line so the lawyers can research the topic and follow up, Saltsman said. They even send thank you notes. “In the end, we’re doing it because we love it,” Solomon said. “If you can help one person or a thousand people it’s gratifying.” Free legal advice, what a concept! news@smd.com

For those touched by AIDS, the show truly must go on BY CYNTHIA VAZQUEZ Special to the Daily Press

NORTH OF WILSHIRE While the GAP, Bono and Oprah may have made it cool to care about AIDS in Africa, the extent of most Americans’ participation in the fight goes about as far as wearing a RED brand T-shirt. However, the First United Methodist Church of Santa Monica is bringing the battle against the disease in Africa much closer to home. Currently on display inside the 11th Street church is the Keiskamma Altarpiece, an ornate 13- by 22-foot structure that provides visitors with a graphic retelling of one village’s valiant fight against the disease. The story of the altarpiece compelled Senior Pastor Patricia Farris, of First United Methodist, to work alongside other local churches in landing the exhibition. “Women started working on it before there was treatment available to them in their community; they were in the midst of the devastation of AIDS,” Farris said of the villagers. “It expresses their tremendous sorrow and the power of their hope.” The people of Hamburg, a fishing village

that sits near a bay on the eastern coast of South Africa, like most, viewed AIDS as a big-city disease. That is, until the mid-1980s, when their younger generation -- returning from the cities where they had gone to seek employment — began dying, leaving orphaned children to be raised by their grandmothers. More than 130 women and several men built the Keiskamma Altarpiece, named for the river that runs through Hamburg and sustains their economy, within a six-month period. The piece spans the story of AIDS in Hamburg – from the past, with dark and muted colors depicting funeral scenes and sick children, to the future, where a sense of promise can be found in the life-sized portraits of grandmothers posing alongside the orphaned grandchildren they are raising. Among the most poignant elements in the piece are the names sewn into the fabric — the names of those who died during the six months it took to create. “There are names all over,” said Margy Blavin, who drove from Los Angeles last week to view the piece, which sits front and center at the Santa Monica church. “That’s the most upsetting part.”

Fabian Lewkowicz fabianl@smdp.com

CLOSING TIME: First Methodist Church of Santa Monica docents Jean Young (left) and Dorothy Williams close the inner panels of the Keiskamma Altarpiece.

The Keiskamma Altarpiece has been the subject of a North American tour since August 2006, but the closest it would have been to Santa Monica was UCLA’s Fowler Museum. Pastor Farris worked to change that. After seeing it for herself, she wanted to share its message with her congregation and local residents. “So often people can become cynical in their lives … too self-centered,” Farris said. “We want to say, ‘There’s something you can do and you ought to be doing. What’s happening to them matters to us all.’” It was then Farris coordinated with local churches and a synagogue — First Presbyterian Church of Santa Monica, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, St. Augustine-by-theSea, St. Monica Catholic Church and the Santa Monica Synagogue — to sponsor the local showing. Each clergy member involved felt the altarpiece’s message crossed not only geographical borders, but faith-based ones as well. When Farris called on Rabbi Jeff Marx of Santa Monica Synagogue in efforts to gain financial sponsorship, the rabbi was eager to lend a hand. “I told her we would be delighted to help out. This is an international issue – it goes across countless boundaries,” Marx said, adding that while worshippers at Santa Monica Synagogue won’t be going to services centered on the piece, they “certainly are going to visit it.” Still, the inter-denominational coopera-

tion goes beyond the financial aspect. Several of the religious institutions have worked together before. “We know each other – we work together a lot,” Farris said. “It was easy to pick up the phone and ask, ‘Would you like to be a part of this?’ Everyone said ‘yes’ right away. We wanted to make a statement to the community, as a larger faith community, that this is something we all care about and are in together.” Farris wants to include everyone in the sense of unified responsibility, regardless of religious affiliation or lack thereof. “Sometimes when we see documentaries on TV or read the paper, the loss is so overwhelming that we become numb. We don’t know what to do,” she said. “This [altarpiece] communicates that, but goes to the next level and communicates that power of hope. “It inspires and challenges us all.” All this week, events at First United Methodist will be geared towards raising money for the Keiskamma Trust, which funds arts, education and the Keiskamma AIDS/HIV Outreach Project. The Keiskamma Altarpiece can be viewed daily through March 22 at the First United Methodist Church, 1008 11th Street. California students rank lower in math proficiency than United States average FROM BOARD PAGE 3 third year, including pre-calculus, statistics, advanced placement statistics, and a more remedial course called essentials I. School board member Jose Escarce said he would consider it a success if a student started out with essentials I and moved onto algebra I and geometry. What he doesn’t want to see is a student take algebra I and geometry and take a step backward by enrolling in essentials I as their third course just because there was nothing else to take. In the coming months, school officials will be looking for ways to reach the goal of 100 percent proficiency in algebra for ninth grade students, and seeking other ways to improve math ability in all grades districtwide. A product of the district, school board

Vice President Oscar de la Torre recalls how he excelled in math in his younger years, taking pre-algebra in the seventh-grade at John Adams Middle School. But he took the course again in the 10th-grade. Back then, seeking help from peers was frowned upon, de la Torre said. The future school board member remembers being told that he was good in English, but not in math. It wasn’t until his college years when de la Torre regained confidence that he could excel in math with a little bit of help from his classmates. Small group instruction is key to helping pupils who are most in need of help, he said. “I had an inferiority complex about doing math,” he said. “I’m a poster child for the system not working well in math.” melodyh@smdp.com

Trojans run wild on Texas, Durant BY EDDIE PELLS Associated Press Sports Writer

SPOKANE, Wash. If Kevin Durant decides to leave college after one year, it will be without a championship — or even a trip into the second week of the tournament. Southern California made sure of that Sunday, getting 22 points from its more seasoned star, junior Nick Young, in an 8768 runaway over Texas and Durant, the freshman front-runner for national player of the year. As he often has this season, Durant led everyone with 30 points and added nine rebounds for fourth-seeded Texas. But he never came close to dominating this East Regional game. Many times when he got the ball, the offense ground to a halt for the Longhorns (25-10), who fell behind by 17 early in the second half and never made a serious run. No. 5 seed USC (25-11) also got 20 points from Daniel Hackett and 17 points and 14 rebounds from Taj Gibson — a 6-foot-9 freshman like Durant. The Trojans won by playing smarter, more disciplined basketball and looking much more like a team in doing it. A team with a very good leader in Young

Should he stay or should he go?

BY EDDIE PELLS AP National Writer

SPOKANE, Wash. Back when his friends were going to movies, hanging out at parties, learning to drive and doing all the other things teenagers do, Kevin Durant was in the gym. Basketball was always his first priority, his No. 1 love. “He never followed the traditional route,” says Taras Brown, the AAU coach who has mentored Durant since he was a lanky 9year-old. Durant chose to go to college at Texas, a school with little basketball tradition, when all the places he “should” have gone — North Carolina, Duke, Maryland — were banging down his door. Now, conventional wisdom says the freshman — arguably the best player in college and certainly a can’t-miss NBA prospect — will leave Texas after one year to move to the pros and cash in on the immense talent he honed in Brown’s gym. Nobody who knows him, however, can be quite sure — Durant has never followed the traditional route. Before his first NCAA tournament game Friday night, a 79-67 win over New Mexico State in which he led Texas with 27 points and eight rebounds, he was focusing only on helping his teammates, living for the moment and winning. “If God feels like it’s his time, he’ll go,”

Today looks a bit smaller as the WNW fades and no southern hemi is due. Size is expected to run waist to chest high at west facing breaks, knee+ at south facing spots. Brown says. “I honestly don’t know. I don’t think he does, either.” Nobody denies Durant would love his college career to go the way Carmelo Anthony’s did at Syracuse in 2003: One year. One championship. Nothing left to prove at that level. At 6-foot-9, Durant is a big man who does more than most big men. He shoots 3-pointers, makes good passes, has great feet and is steadily learning the nuances of posting up and playing interior defense. He showed that against New Mexico State, just as he has all season. What his coaches notice as much as any of that is the way he smiles. “You give him a basketball and a basket, and he’s going to be happy,” says Josh Hutchison, an assistant at Towson University who helped coach Durant during his senior year of high school. “He’s happy just shooting, happy being in the gym. I don’t think it’s work for him.” At least not yet. In a few weeks, the swingman with the huge wingspan almost certainly will become the first freshman to be named college basketball’s player of the year. And if he decides to go pro, he could be the first pick in the NBA draft. Another fabulous freshman, Ohio State’s Greg Oden, also factors into that equation. First, though, Durant must decide to leave the Longhorns. Nobody in his inner circle is ready to proclaim it’s a done deal, and Durant himself swats the question away like an opponent’s ill-timed floater through the lane. “Whenever the time comes, I’ll make my decision about next year,” he says. “I’m just worried about winning games in the tournament.”

CENTER OF POLITICS SAM WATERSTON is putting his star power to work in backing a movement aimed at promoting the political center rather than the left or right. The star of “Law & Order” told George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “This Week” he has joined Unity ‘08, a group that would like to elect a bipartisan ticket to the White House. “There’s a huge majority of the American people who are ready for this, who are not represented in the current system. And this is an opportunity for those people to speak up,” the actor said. “I think by its existence it will have a beneficial effect on anybody who’s running for president, because they will be obliged to look over their other shoulder at the center, and not simply address the partisan factions that have so much sway in primaries,” Waterston said. McGreevey said. On Thursday, Gov. Bill Richardson — who is running for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination — also criticized the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. McGreevey, also a Democrat, called Richardson a “progressive voice.” Asked if he was endorsing Richardson’s bid for the presidency, he said it’s “too early in process.”

â– Brian Ward, 29, was arrested in St. Clairsville, W.Va., in February after a student's parent saw him acting strange while parked across the street from St. Clairsville High School. The parent reported that Ward appeared maybe to be having a seizure, in that his arms were "thrashing around," but police found that that was just his reaction to an illegal inhalant, which was not identified. â– Novelist (27 books) David Eddings, 75, accidentally destroyed his Carson City, Nev., garage and part of his next-door office in January while he was flushing out the gas tank of his idle sports car. He said later that his intention was to remove the gasoline from the car to reduce the fire risk, but then he saw that some fluid had leaked onto the garage floor. For some reason, Eddings' curiosity about the leak (water or gasoline?) caused him to light a piece of paper and toss it onto the puddle, just to find out. "One word comes to mind," he later told the Nevada Appeal. "Dumb."
